I came for the weird. I got the weird.

I've played it twice in the time it's taken me to post in this thread and the PC Gaming Thread and I've only missed two things to do.

10/10: weirdest game I've ever played.

11. The Caverns of the Snow Witch

12. Valiant Hearts. - Very sweet.

13. Sorcery! - Anyone with a slight interest in Fighting Fantasy books should play this. It's excellent.

46. Spoiler Alert: an auto-running platformer where the first thing you do is finish the game...and then play the whole thing in reverse. So while constantly running backwards you need to jump on enemies to unkill them, pass through coins to uncollect them and tap the screen to suck in fireballs so you unshoot people in the face. If you miss any of these tasks in a level you get a 'Time Paradox!' warning and have to start the level again. It's a nice idea but it's very short, not very difficult and is made into a memorisation challenge by the fact you can't see far enough backwards to properly react to upcoming stuff. Which is fine in itself as each level is purposefully very short, but it would be nice if you could better see what you were doing as often you'll fail because you can't jump early enough to unkill an enemy by the time they've actually arrived on screen. It's also a bit odd because the real challenge is to gold star each level by completing it first time. The thing is, if you do fuck up, you have to go back to the level select screen and retry from there to reset your Time Paradox count to zero; so forcing you to do this is pointless and weird and a bit of an annoyance. Resetting your Time Paradox count has no effect at all on the level itself so each playthrough is the same regardless of how you started the level making a bit of a mockery of the gold star thing. Anyway, definitely worth a go on Android or iOS; though as a Windows game it would feel pretty lacking I think.

Monsterbag-o-shit. I'd watch it if it was just a cartoon (it looks real nice and has lots of character) but as a game it's fucking dire. Oh, and it crashed a bunch of times and the ending credits glitched so I couldn't watch them. Just dreadful. This is happening too often in games nowadays. Far far too often.

Don't play it. It's shit.

18. Murasaki Baby (Vita).

I quite enjoyed that actually. It's so short that it's inoffensive enough to pass the time away. I really liked the art style and the sound effects were great. Some of the little tiny stories about the 4 folk you meet are done quite well too. The rest of the game is typical bland puzzle affair that won't tax you and will probably bore you. Despite it being A to B stuff though, it's done with enough style that you might just want to get to the next bit.

Want an example? At one point you can shrink yourself. How? GIANT EYE PEERING THROUGH A MAGNIFYING GLASS THAT'S STARING AT YOU, that's how. You want to break through some rocks? CALL MASSIVE BUNNY RABBIT TO JUMP UP AND DOWN. Actually those capital letters make it sound more interesting that it actually is. It'll take about an hour or two to smash through so why not give it a punt if you've got a PS Vita and access to PS+: it's a bit different, init.

3/10

Very nice visually, and it is fascinating to see the Escher geometry unfold. They obviously spent a lot of time polishing the engine and getting it just right. The relatively small screen of my Nexus 4 didn't do it justice, though, it really needs something bigger to draw the player properly in. It played fine all the same.

Only 10 short levels, though, and of those I would estimate that you only need to do any actual thinking on 3 or so of them, the rest is just trial and error or immediately obvious. I imagine this was actually a lot more fun and challenging to design than it is to play, at least for the seasoned gamer.

Quite artsy, but in a nice way, like those illustrated children's books that we don't quite remember, but still lurk in our subconscious. In fact, I think I would have loved this as a child, but my 40-something year old self was slightly disappointed - until I realized I didn't even pay €1 for it. Bloody hell, what a bargain for what is a very nice hour of light entertainment.

1) Broken Sword 2 (iOS)
2) Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies (iOS)
3) Machinarium (iOS) - Puzzler where you play a little robot who has to wander around, find his love, and beat up some bullies by solving puzzles and pulling switches. Absolutely lovely, although needed a walkthrough for a couple of puzzles.
4) SlitherLink (iOS) - All included puzzles completed on easy, medium and hard.
5) Conceptis SlitherLink (iOS) - All included puzzles completed on easy, medium and hard, and a couple of extra packs purchased.

Ooh, I'll try and do this all year this time (yeah, right).

1. Nidhogg Vita/PS4 - the greatest fighting game since bushido blade. Essential same room multiplayer. Even really enjoyed the, very short, single player.
2. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. - PS4 - Short, sweet campaign and the best in years. The first since MW with a coherent plot, and the robosuits really freshen it up. But the end is a bit of a squib. Enjoyable fluff. (it appears to be Xmas tradition that the wife gets a copy - well done Activision).
3. Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze - WiiU such a great game. Controls wonderfully, and so differently to mario. The lion king level is a musical masterpiece. Rayman legends gets so much love due to its graphics, but give me something that controls as well as this any day.
4. Game of Thrones: Episode 1 - PS4 - Not bad at all. Never really got on with Telltale's Walking dead game, but I think that is possibly because I got the whole season at once. Playing this for a couple of hours every other month seems better somehow. Very enjoyable way to 'play an episode'. Excited to find out my partners choices when she plays it as I think she will be appalled at some of my choices.
5. Final Fantasy X - Vita The first time I've finished a FF game since VII at release. I thought JRPGs were dead to me. Full of grind and random battles and filler, but in a portable format I loved this. Would never have completed it on a couch, but it's made the last month of commuting a blast. Ignored every side quest and went straight down the path, so was constantly a somewhat low level, which made the combat fascinating, rather than the typically. Hammer-standard-attack-until-you-win style of others. Fell apart at the 3rd to last boss when I had to do X damage in 15 or so turns, and that was impossible with my skill set, so I had to grind to level a character for 2 hours, and then they had an attack that made the rest of the battles boringly easy. Looking forward to X-2.
6. Kick and Fennick - Vita - I've said it all over the place, but this is such a surprising delight. A genuinely novel and new 2D platformer. Game of the Year contender. I'll be wittering about this all year. Fantastic. As I said in the PS+ thread, there is something really primal and entertaining about parabolas. Must be evolution getting us to enjoy chucking rocks at mammoths. Or the use of urinals. Or something. But whatever the reason, a 2D platformer based on the recoil from a sniper rifle sending you flying in beautiful parabolas across the map is just superbly enjoyable to play. Binged and completed it over 3 days. Didn't outstay it's welcome, and bar a tiny dip in the middle where there is too much of a focus on timing puzzles, it fires on all cylinders throughout.
7. The Swapper - PS4/Vita if anything this year has proven it's that 2D platformers are such a vibrant platform for different experiences. Wonderfully explores it's central idea, and the mechanisms tie so well with its, actually great, plot. Genuinely good scifi. Which is rare in any format outside books. Highly recommended.
8. GoT: Episode 2 - PS4 yep, I guess this will count as six games over the year. Treaded water, slightly, and I'm hesitant about the importance of our decisions. But it's interesting how different me and my partners choices were.

A huge gap due to playing, and adoring, MH4 on the 3DS and Bloodborne on the PS4. Nowhere near done with either, but so, very very good.

Stopped to complete a few 'easy games' to give me a breather, so:

9. BoxBoy - 3DS - Played it for 7.5 hrs. It cost about £4.50 - 5.50? And every tiny level was incredibly entertaining. I recommend it very highly. it's all about making squares.
10. Gunvolt - 3DS - the nes de-make that comes free with the 'real' game, or available for a couple of quid. Very slight, but fun enough. Doesn't set the world on fire.

!?!

Are they by the DS Slitherlink people? I really want a good Picross or Slitherlink iOS game, but they always seem so lacking in comparison to the DS/3DS versions.

It is a festering barrel of lazy game design. I got so angry that I wrote a shit load of words about it in this very forum. Not bad for a game that, hopefully, no one will ever play.

48. Hohokum: what a fucking brilliant little game. Even if you don't figure out it's puzzles, which are largely straightforward, there's a joy to be had from it's lovely visual design and amazing sound. It's weird and stupid and funny and polished to a ludicrous level of shine.

I've finally gotten hold of a bread bin model C64, which unlike the later models will play those digital sounds that impressed so much back in the day. Another visitor! Stay a while! Stay forever! Unfortunately, this particular vintage that I got has one of the more aggressive and distorted audio filters in it, so not everything sounds great, and some of Hubbard's later work sounds decidedly terrible.

I still have a little CRT TV (long may it live), so no ugly pixelation, ghosting, jerkiness or control lag. It is not commonly known, but the C64 does s-video output, so with the right cables you don't get any of the awful color distortion present in the C64's composite and RF signals. I bought a new old stock Wico Command Control joystick that someone put on ebay a while ago, and it's just about the best joystick ever made. And of course I have my 1541 Ultimate-II, so I can play anything I want from a Micro SD card. All I could possibly wish for is a way to play games designed for NTSC at their proper speed. Maybe someone will think of something. Some day.

But enough about me. We're here to play...

IMPOSSIBLE MISSION

Professor Elvin Atombender is working to break the launch codes of key military installations of every major world power and trigger a missile attack that will destroy the world.

You are Special Agent 4125. You must make your way through a set of randomly placed rooms, dodging cute but deadly robots, and search all the furniture you find for keycard pieces, 36 in total. You must combine these pieces into 9 keycards by solving visual puzzles on your pocket computer as the remaining seconds tick away in the corner of the screen. These puzzles really do seem impossible at first, but you click and you arrange, you mirror and combine, and suddenly you get something right and things start to make sense. When you have all 9 keycards and thus the password that will grant you access to Elvin's hideout, you race back through all the rooms trying to remember where you saw that locked doorway.

Oh those cute but deadly robots! Each robot is randomly programmed at beginning of the game, but they are programmed, and they stick to their programs. Some robots change their behavior when they spot you, but they still follow a program. So for each robot you need to figure out what makes it tick, so to speak, then create a strategy for it that takes into account the topography of the room and the behavior of the other robots. Then you need to actually carry it out, through some fairly demanding platform action. Or you can decide that it is indeed impossible and spend one of those precious passwords that will temporarily disable robots in this room. If you run out of passwords, you can spend some of your valuable time in one of two special memory puzzle rooms to earn more.

You have 6 hours to complete the mission, which sounds like a lot, but every time you die you lose 10 minutes, and death lurks around every corner. In reality, the game takes less than an hour to complete, which is fortunate, since you can't save your progress. I think this is only the second time I've managed to beat it, and it was with something like 25 minutes left on the clock. It gets tense.

Gorgeous graphics. Sensational sound. Perfect game design. Great controls. One of the best games on the Commodore 64.

21. Infamous: First Light (PS4).

How long have I been holding onto this since it was on PSN? 12 months? Anyway, I finally found the strength to bother to play it and guess what? It's terrible. The most bring and tedious fetch quests I've ever had the displeasure to chore through. Shoot down 4 cameras, scan 10 cameras, fight 10 waves of baddies, find 8 trucks and destroy them etc etc. Honest to god, I thought they were taking the piss and someone would pat me on the back and say "Haha, we made you pretend that we were the laziest game designers on the planet but now you can play the real game for sticking with us." Why? Cause the main character is called Fetch!!! ... Turns out I was wrong and it was just the laziest game design that anyone has thrown into a sandbox. My god have mercy on your soul if I ever catch up with the people who cobbled this steaming turd together.

Mind you, I thought the main character was being voiced by the girl who did Elli in the Last of Us. I'm pretty certain it was but can't be arsed to check.

22. Towerfall: Ascension (PS4).

All levels done on normal. I shall go back and clear hard but only when I've done something else. But I shall be back cause this game is deliciously difficult. I think it's the bees knees even on the campaign but apparently it's the multiplayer that shines cause it's sooooo zany. Is it though? No seriously, is it? I don't really have any friends who play games, let alone those that will sit in the same room and play an indie game with me because that's what you need since you ain't getting any on-line multiplayer action here me'laddy cause that'd be too difficult on the world's most powerful console.

It feels like someone is being a goddamn killjoy cause I really fancy playing this with others for a bit. I bet the PC version is online. Or maybe not.

Anyway, it's bloody good if you're looking for something to pass the time and challenge your skillz.

IMDB says no. Though, interestingly, The Last Of Us same actress was in the game but just not as the main character; she did the voice for 'Jenny'.

ETA: Oh, and the guy who did Joel on TLOU was 'Delsin Rowe' here.

52. SURREALISTa: Another short and very fucking weird game. It's less a game and more an interactive gallery of works by Giorgio de Chirico but it's got levels and some platforming and suchlike so I'm counting it. An interesting wee thing, though very rough around the edges. According to the website there's a big update coming later in the year so I'll keep an eye on it. Sidenote: one of the paintings that appears looked really familiar and I eventually realised it was the cover of ICO. Although Giorgio de Chirico's stuff was apparently an inspiration for the cover of ICO it's not actually his so it's odd they've stuck that image in there with no context. There's some related chat here.

Interesting factoid: ICO's creator bloke, I forget his name, Myziami(?), painted that ICO box art himself and they let him use it.

Multiplayer is a real treat. If ever you can get someone about your level to compete against you you'll have hours of fun.

Very, very good stuff indeed and comes highly recommended as I've been totally gripped by it for the week or so it's taken me to finish it. You know it's a good mobile game when you' carry on playing it as soon as you get in the door after commuting home.

Taught me that I really don't spent enough time WASD-ing around these days as the fingers on my left hand are fucking killing me after spending the couple of hours it took to finish it.

1) GTA V

Finished it (well at least the main mission line). It really is an incredible technical achievement and a splendid game.

23. Betrayer (PC).

I love Monolith cause they've made two of my favourite games of all time: Blood and FEAR. This ain't made by Monolith. BUT it is made by some chaps who worked for Monolith and then set up their own company to make their own games. I believe this was their first.

Betrayer gets three things so very right, right off the bat:

1) I plug my 360 controller in and it works. No faffing about. It works.
2) The atmosphere is fantastic which is due to 2 things:
a. GRAPHIX. The black and white aesthetic is startlingly gorgeous (with smatterings of red here and there), and the graphics look tremendous as a consequence. It's mainly trees, forest and wooden shacks and outposts but the way in which the trees bend in the wind is just mindblowing. It's such a small trick as every tree starts to shift with the sound of the wind blowing through the leaves but even after completing the game I was never less than impressed at bendy trees. It just gave the place more life when, for the most part, there's not a lot going on.
b. SOUNDZ: There's no music. There's no, erm, nothing really. A few birds here and there. If you're near a beach (which is only at the beginning) you might hear the water a bit but the main sound is the sound of silence (and occasional gust of wind as aforementioned). Other sounds stand stark in contrast: the sound of a distant gun firing as enemies are alerted to your presence, the clang and smash of a bell which teleports you to the spirit realm, and in the spirit realm the dull ringing of the bell until you mute the sound to return to the real world. The absence of sound works in the context of the game which is supposed to be a bit mysterious.
3) There's zero hand holding. You arrive washed up on a beach. You collect your thoughts and off you trot. Why? Who knows? Where is everyone? Who knows? Why is every area map covered in red circles? Let's go off and find out.

That's the good stuff. It's kinda downhill from there.

The combat is at times piss poor and others quite thrilling. It takes forever to load a musket so combat can be spent backpedaling as much as shooting stuff. The baddies are vicious and once you've been spotted they'll be on you like a tramp on chips. An endless procession of baddies will follow you forever. And they will follow you because no matter what you do you'll always get spotted since they all have super vision apparently.

The game is meant to be played stealthily but the vision on these guys is ridiculous. They appear as tiny specks on the horizon and you're meant to hit them at that distance with a bow and arrow. I got quite good at it but I can imagine that some would get too frustrated by the pin-point precision needed. Plus, everyone is jolly awesome at hitting you with a bow or a pistol or musket round. I also got good at timing my jump dodges or running away but, by-gum, they aren't 'arff good at hitting you.

The cool thing is that you're supposed to run in when the wind blows through the trees to muffle your footsteps - and it works for the first map - but after the first two areas it stops being a viable way of going around and once you've got a few good weapons onboard you'll risk the larger fight than take all day waiting for the wind to blow.

Worse still is the spirit world which is populated by rubbish skeletons and flying skulls. They aren't scary. They are annoying. The spirit world seems woefully under developed too as while the real world requires a bit of skill and stealth, the spirit world has none of that since some fights you can't avoid. And it's all grey and black which ain't anywhere near as good as the real world black and white aesthetic. I feel like they did the main game but didn't have much time to spend on the spirit domain. Which was a shame. They should have made it rain. On the plain. In Spain.

Anyway, the combat is good but mainly rubbish and so is the set-up of the game structure. It follows this pattern once it gets going: Hunt all the red circles, dig up all the clues, find the bell, transport to spirit world, find the spirits and give them the clues, they might send you somewhere else to get another clue, find it, bring it back. Maybe repeat it again until you run out of dialogue. Repeat for several spirits. Once you've done about everything in the area move to the next area and do it again.

Moving about the map is a ball ache too since you can't set waypoints so you are constantly in and out of the map every few seconds. Bit silly but at least it doesn't interrupt the clean UI. Actually, I kinda appauld them for this decision. One of the few times that design triumphs over ease of use.

Anyway, I'm boring myself now but the thing that made me stick to the end were the stories of the spirits. They are all delightfully dark and usually about murder, death, rape, lies and deceit; someone always dies; usually everyone. The stories are told well through basic text. The spirits can't remember what happened to them until the clues jog their mind and then sometimes it only jogs half a memory or they are lying so you don't get the full story and the next clue can yield a completely different story to what you were expecting. I really enjoyed this most about the whole game. No reams of Fallout style books. Just little tales told as a person would tell it.

I'mma score it 6/10. It would have been 5 but I liked the stories. No, hang on, I didn't like the ending much as it was too much like FEAR. Back down to 5 you go. I still really enjoyed it, mind. It ain't an easy game, in fact you can turn on Dark Souls style death drops if you wanted to since it's Dark Souls style difficult, you see, but it is very interesting and I want the Monolith people to keep making games cause there's greatness to be had from those folk. I can tell.

24. Thirty Flights of Loving (PC)

It's not really a game is it? It's a five minute trailer for a game that will never be made. Fun but not even worth my £1.49 I paid for it.

25. Aliens: Colonial Marines (PC)

It's not the worst game in the world, it actually looked kinda alright on my PC. And, yes, I did just run through whole sections of it because it's so fucking tediously dull. It has all the worst FPS tropes mashed into it:

Do x task z times in a row.
Shoot bazooka at y number of big guns z times in a row.
Go to A then to B then back to A. Then to B. Again.
Bad cut scenes.
Identikit corridors. Endless corridors.
Bad voice acting.
Bad dialogue.
Bullet sponge boss fights.
Boss fights where you do x task z times in a row before pressing button.
A boss fight where your actions directly kills the boss. Then it is revealed in a cut scene that it ain't dead and so someone else kills it off in that cut scene rendering everything you've done pointless.
Steam pipes. In space this time.
Endless door opening scenes. Every other door has to be cut open seemingly as everywhere was welded shut at the beginning of the game... Utterly fucking pointless. It serves nothing in the game. No tension can be granted by watching someone cut open a door . What does it do? Slows the game down and frustrates the player as they watch the same animation for the 30th time.
And so on.

1/10 for the pulse rifle noise. And that using the shotgun is alright. Oh, and that it gives you all of the weapons from the beginning was a really really smart choice. It's just a shame that the gun radial bollocks is fiddly to use and looks like dog shit.

58. NaissancE: This one's pretty special. An 'exploration' game with light puzzle solving and, sadly, some first person platforming. Fuck all that though because the world itself is the real attraction. You'll split your time between claustrophobic tunnels and massive, massive open spaces but the entire thing is steeped in this lonely, subtle, sinister and utterly alien atmosphere. It definitely has it's issues (the afore mentioned platforming, the idiotic 'breathing' technique required to sprint for any length of time, the odd part which sacrifices clarity for visual design and ends up dipping into frustration) but there's enough of it that's properly breath taking to massively outweigh the bad stuff. I suspect this'll be a bit of a marmite game but if it's your kind of thing I reckon it'll get it's hooks in pretty deep. There's a review of it here which pretty much nails my opinion but much better written than my ramblings above.

59. Lifeless Planet: Another exploration game with an initially interesting sci-fi hook i.e. you're an astronaut who lands on a distant planet and, fresh out of cryosleep, discovers that it's actually a barren wasteland rather than the verdant paradise it had been on long range scans. Even weirder you soon come across the remnants of a soviet settlement on the planet, despite the fact you're supposed to be the first person to set foot on it. What follows doesn't really hold up to that promise and the story's a bit weak. The gameplay is atmospheric and exploration with some particularly unchallenging platforming all of which, if I'm honest, gets boring after a while. The sound design and music were lovely and subtle, with great tranches of it rightly played to nothing but the sound of your footsteps, but it's a pretty ugly game all in. I did enjoy it and it was weirdly relaxing at points but I can't really recommend it unless you're specifically after something a bit meandering and laid back.
