Technically there is time, but I've had a recent run of Android games that I've spent time on but never finished and just last night I gave up on Portal Stories: Mel after spending a good few hours on that so I've lost some ground there. Also, as soon as Fallout 4 comes out I'm not going to finish any non-Android stuff until into next year so that won't help.

Fair enough if you want to be a failure.

I do. It's really all I've ever wanted in life.

But if you succeed at that....

Apparently one of a series of connected games all using the same sort of unsettling style so I might seek out the rest.

If you don't make it to 104 you might as well quit gaming for good.

Well I'll finish Temple of Osiris in the next few days and probably squeeze in either Wolfenstein or Shadow of Mordor before Fallout 4, which I might then finish before January. That all would take me up to 90; so I need to finish fourteen Android games in the next three and a bit months to make up the rest. It's not undoable.

89. Mystery of Haunted Hollow: One of the many Myst-esque adventure games on Android. A pretty good example of the genre with logical puzzles and a bit of variety.

Missed a couple from the last few weeks. I'd sort of stopped bothering having blown through 52 but I might as well shoot for 104 now.

It's good fun, and if it was the first one I'd be a lot more enthused about it, but it suffers massively in comparison to Guardian of Light which I think was better in almost every way.

You should check it out as it's awesome and will be cheap as shit now. I picked it up to play through for a second time on the PC for only a couple of quid.

90. The Mystery of Blackthorn Castle: Decent Myst-like for Android. Logical puzzles, a good length to it.
91. Sometimes You Die: A very odd wee thing. Ostensibly a minimalist platform game but presented as a sort of commentary on games with chat from what I think you're supposed to assume is the developer as you enter each screen. The initial hook is that with each death your 'corpse' stays on screen and can be used as a platform to get over some of the challenges; and indeed on some levels you need to build bridges and staircases of your own bodies. It's rarely even slightly challenging and you can breeze through the entire thing; but it's at the end things get weird. The game introduces a gravity mechanic (turn your phone upside down to reverse gravity) right at the last minute which you can then use to get into another 'secret' set of levels which look different and are much, much harder than the game was up until that point. And even when you get through that you hit a dead end which only implies an ending because if you pause the game at that point the credits appear. However, if you followed the path earlier to what seemed like the ending before the 'secret' levels, the very final room there lets you pick a six digit code which...does nothing. Apparently. And is never explained. So, um, yeah.

By my calculations, if he continues to complete games at the rate he has done so far, he will end the year on 131 completed games.

A proper forecast would be "140 bracketed by standard error bars, pallet rounding and environmental effects"

I did actually jack in both Buzz Killem and Space Marshalls in the last couple of weeks as they were annoying me. Buzz Killem I only spent about half an hour on as it was just too repetitive and badly designed. Space Marshalls I spent quite a lot of time on during commuting because there's a really good game in there somewhere but ultimately the flawed implementation of the stealth mechanics were enough to grind me down after a few hours worth of play.

ETA: also Mage Gauntlet after a couple of hours because the levels were just basically the same thing over and over with slightly different colours. Which was a shame as it had potential and was genuinely quite funny in place but I just got bored about half way through.

91. Sometimes You Die
92. Die For Metal
93. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris: very disappointed with this. Guardian of Light was one of my favourite games of the last generation and one of the few I've played through twice but this sequel was just inferior in every single way:

  • The visuals are a bit sharper but the visual design and the enemies are all very generic compared to the previous game.
  • Each level was just a linear run for the end whereas GoL managed to capture the feel of proper tombs with interlocking parts and routes that crossed over each other. They felt like someone had actually taken time to design them rather than just chucking some corridors together in a map editor and calling it good.
  • The signature laser weapon was pish compared to the spear and was barely actually required. Using GoL's spear to make ad-hoc platforms was good fun and made perfect sense in the game world. Also, chucking spears into the faces of bad guys was never not satisfying as all fuck.
  • The weapons in general just didn't have the satisfying feel they did in the previous game. In GoL, in the middle of a fight, when your bonus meter hit the top and your chosen power up kicked in you could instantly feel the difference as the bad guys suddenly started dying quicker and the crowd management got a hair easier. ToO though I never noticed anything like that and all combat was just a messy Benny Hill backwards charge while whatever weapon I had phut-phutted away pathetically.
  • They put a really fucking teeth-grinding cool down delay in between uses of the bombs. In GoL setting and using bombs was a crucial part of arena combat and would often buy you the time you needed to take out a massive load of wee dicks. In ToO though, after you lay and detonate a bomb, there's a lengthy and seemingly variable amount of time before the bomb button will respond to lay another one. So the entire function becomes so random and unreliable you just stop using it properly and get by without it because you never know when it'll actually let you use it. This change alone made me want to find whomever decided to dick about with the basic game mechanics and punch them in the fucking tits.
  • The puzzles were incredibly easy and required very little thought.
  • The stupid fucking timebomb balls were over used and pointlessly over-designed. Having to hold down a single button to lengthen the fuse the entire time you move them around was just stupid as it didn't constrain you or change your interaction at all so was literally just a needless and constant annoyance.
  • The entire game was shitloads easier than the previous one and I just blew through the whole thing in a couple of sessions without any real problems.
  • The 'open world' type design they went for was blatantly just a box ticking exercise because it added absolutely nothing to the game at all and would have been a million times better with the linear progression of the original.
  • The way the artifacts worked was just fucking idiotic. In GoL you got specific new weapons and artifacts (swappable power ups basically) for completing specific challenges. While that was still the case in ToO they also littered the entire game world with chests which could be opened with the jewels you picked up. The thing is though that the contents of each chest are completely random, and there are literally hundreds of the things all over the place, so aside from a general rule of 'the higher the chest value the better an item it probably contains' you've got no reason to pick one over another. And you don't get enough jewels during the course of the game to open even a fraction of the chests so what are they all for? Seriously, when you finish a full level there would be between 15 and 20 chests waiting for you and you'd have enough jewels to open a couple of smaller ones or maybe a bigger one and that's your lot. Then back in the hub world there's another fifty or so waiting for you which you'll never open a fraction of. I...just...what the fuck were they thinking? How could that possible have seemed like a good idea?

I mean I can't say I didn't enjoy it at all, and if this was the first game in the series I might've had a higher opinion of it, but it's just such a step backwards in pretty much every regard from the genuinely brilliant Guardian of Light. To anyone (e.g. Grim) who's only ever played Temple of Osiris please seek out Guardian of Light and give it a shot to see how it should be done because I'd hate for people's opinion of the series to hang only on this massively inferior new one.

It's Dark Souls 2 remix. Which is just fine with me because it's a terrific game and now in 1080p and 60fps.

Short, sharp and sweet. Loved it.

It's the iconic arcade game, but enhanced with widescreen, 3D and 60fps - and two new tunes as well that fit right in. The resolution of the original game fits the 3DS like a glove. The 3D is very deep, but with no annoyances or pop-out effects, and just looks really fantastic in combination with the smooth framerate. The game controls perfectly.

This is so well done, it feels like it was always meant for the 3DS, with only the small size of the screen detracting from the experience.

Anyway, this was good, but it was the original game. Now to replay it in HD as the trilogy app is free with a £5.99 in app purchase for the first full three games. Bargain!

Not a pure board game experience like Hitman GO, it's been given animations and boss fights etc. Still excellent fun though, and looks lovely (a few cues taken from Monument Valley, I feel).

What a shit name for a brilliant game. Metroidvania with fewer "upgrades" as you go along but it has plenty of ideas even if they do all revolve around blue and red lights. Blue attracts red and visa versa; red repels red and blue repels blue and that's about it. There's your puzzles - go finish me you little dick.

It has a great hand drawn look about it. The animations are nice. The puzzles aren't too taxing but sometimes they can be fiddly as fuck. Moreover the boss fights, and some areas too unfortunately, are just memory tests and this is where the game is at its absolute worse. Your little character is one-hit killed and so entire sequences have to be repeated in one perfect go. This is easier said than done especially where something will pop out or a boss will do a move that you couldn't possibly anticipate which kills you instantly and you have to go back and do the whole thing again and try and remember what it was that deadid you.

Persistence pays off however as the story, characters and art are all fantastic. There is not a single character that make a word other than the odd grunt. This is brill because it allows the background artwork, occasional collectible and intermittent puppet show to advance the story. I approve of this no end.

No stupid voice recording on a tape.

No rooting around in bins for no reason.

No cut scenes.

The story is there to be seen and acted out by you as the character. Wordlessly. It's absolute bliss.

The campaign is fairly short about 4-5 hours maybe? I lost track of time. But that's a perfect length for it. Once complete you can, if you are so inclined, to seek out the 34 collectible scrolls that tell the full story and leads to the secret ending. I got 16. And you need 15 to get to the final boss. Ah well, I wasn't try that hard then. The main problem with the collectible scrolls is that unlike most Metroid games the map screen doesn't show the location of these things. Most of these types of games show the collectibles when you've seen them on screen or, like Ori & The Blind Forest, shows them up as areas are unlocked usually in tricky places to get that force you to use your abilities to get to them. There's none of this 'ere. They don't show up on the map and whilst you could probably pound your way around the map once you've got the full set of skillz, I couldn't be bothered because that would require essentially going through the entire map for a second time and I'd only just cleared it for the first time. So they can get fucked. It's a shocking oversight really and doesn't encourage continued play without the aid of an internet map or guide which, frankly, is a bit cheap. Had they shown be the ones I'd spotted but forgot about then I'd have gone back to mop them all up just like I did on Ori & The Blind Forest.

Anyway, I watched the secret ending on Youtube. It was pretty cool, but some twat thought that when I wanted to watch a secret ending that I couldn't be bothered to do myself that I would be interested in seeing his face in the corner of the screen. Worse than that, the pillock is commenting over the top of the secret ending. "Oh my god. Will he see his mom? That cat is so random." Seriously, is this what a youtuber is? These people who get tons of followers for some unknown reason. God I hate some fads online.

Oh, Teslagrad! Play it. Real fucking good. PS+ was awesome this month dontchaknow.

95. Framed: a well received puzzle game on iOS that's finally been released on Android. The central conceit is that the story in each level is told through a series of comic book panels which you need to reorder to get your character to the end of the page. So, for instance, in the initial setup your guy might run round a corner straight into the sights of a waiting policeman; so you reorder the panels to have him climbing a set of stairs first in an earlier panel and when he gets to the cop he runs unseen over his head. Basically it's a genuinely unique game and great fun so people should play it.

It's well priced at 79p, so I'm fine with that.

And sometimes I go out and leave the telly on and Coronation Street might get another addition to the TV viewings numbers but that doesn't mean that I'm going to series link coronation Street.

I don't think that's how that works.

What a massive waste of electricity. You should be ashamed.
