Like any public forum it has its fair share of trolls and idiots, but it's helped to raise awareness of feminist issues, so this is a good thing in my book.

What feminist issues were those that the forum users raised awareness of? It largely gets in the news because there's a bunch of militantly pro this or anti that nutters on there, usually quoted in relation to why nursery is absolutely fine and actually better for the child than being with a parent and is the reason why little Tarquin is already reading and writing at an equivalent to a 10 year old. Oh, and bottled milk is better too. It's a middle class echo chamber.

Oh, and penis beakers, obvs.

How did you go about getting checked for and finding this out, and then getting the vaccine done? Did you have to pay for it privately?

Russell thinks he might also have missed out on some as one year at school everyo e came back saying they'd had a round of immunisations over summer following letters home, but Russell hadn't been taken to the docs.

I happened to ask mum and she said "Oh, yeah, I forgot about that". I then went to the GP surgery and asked for an MMR jab and they gave me one. Simples.

Surely middle-class people are the ones who can afford to be stay at home parents. Unless they're just super-lazy and stay at home but send their kids to nursery. But most people send their kids to nursery because it's a financial necessity.

Really? Do a search on there for nurseries, for instance. Everything to do with children divides into two distinct pro and anti camps, usually fairly rabid. Mrs K very qucikly stopped expressing opinions on anything on there due to the vociferous responses.

markg wrote:

They do both - there are totally career driven people and those who have the money to stay at home - both have ludicrously strong opinnons on which is the right one, and each camp is a mutually self-reinforcing echo chamber. The posters falling into those camps tend towards the middle class.

Apologies, I realised my original post suggested that everyone on mumsnet was in favour of nurseries. I was talking about what it gets reported for.

I have an account on mumsnet and was relatively active once upon a time. Although there are a few "pro" and "anti" nutters of a variety of flavours, the vast majority of the users are reasonable, sensible people. Just one example: I had one woman, who barely knew me, emergency courier me a hospital grade breast pump worth over £200 when my daughter had a nursing strike at 10 months old.

Not sure what's wrong with nurseries that's got your back up about those in favour of them? (Disclaimer: both of my children have been - and in the case of my youngest, still is - in nursery)

Oh I don't doubt it - I was (originally) more on about what it gets into the public eye for. In terms of why it's mentioned in the public sphere it has seemed to me that it's less about raising awareness of feminist issues and more about using it as an example of a divide on an emotive subejct.

I also don't doubt my view of Mumsnet is coloured by those bits of it I've read - not being a frequent flyer there one tends to pick up on the more extremist bits (a bit like Guardian opinion pieces and CIF comments...). I'm also influenced by what Mrs K describes of her time posting on there and reading it. So yes, my view of it is probably a little unfairly biased.

Quote:

Personally nothing at all - it was an example that sprang to mind. What annoys me is people on both sides of the divide creating the divide in the first place - with parenting there's no "right" way per se with most of these things, and parents do what they feel is best for their children in their circumstances and shouldn't be shouted down or criticised or made to feel guilty for it. But that doesn't fill as many column inches or threads.

Well, I don't always do what is best for my kids. Sometimes I do what I can afford, or what I need to do to stay sane.

But it's close enough :p

Well quite, that's what I meant by doing their best in the circumstances they're in. There aren't that many parents who deliberately set out to do stuff that's not good for their kids! :)

Not having any kids I may be wrong here, but isn't it the parents job to raise their children? Or do the nursery's take responsibility for more than just caring for the rugrats while parents are at work?

I dunno but she's stopped pulling at her lead and doesn't whine when you tie her up outside the shop, so that counts for something.

the play of light and reflection of the bare tree branches outside on the panelled glass in my living room door, overlaying the coat rack which lay beyond the door, made it look like there was a tall man with a long arm reaching out to grab me.

How do I get my heart back out of my throat and into my chest? Do I have to wait for it to stop beating so fast that the individual beats are no longer distinguishable?

Ask my wife.

I have been looking at what is about and so has MrsA. I think we should wait a year, but if something does come up I think we would go for it. My main reason is that 1 in 3 state schools in Bradford are not good, and I don't want to decorate only to move.
