Shaved my beard off and gone clean shaven for the first time since 2007. I'd forgotten how irritating nicking yourself was. Perhaps I should have gone to the barber's instead, but it's off now.

I barely recognise myself in the mirror: hope I still get served beers in the pub.

Now the razor burn and cuts have disappeared it does. Not looking forward to the upkeep though.

Importantly, I was still served beer.

You know Kern, I couldn't actually believe that I've never seen you without a beard. I thought you must have had your dates wrong, as I thought your beard was recent.

But you look so different (in a good way) without your beard that I realise I must never have seen your whole face.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the wind around your face for as long as you can stand the upkeep! x

Halfway to work I realised that I left my coat at home. If the forecast is correct, I'm going to get a bit soggy this afternoon.

That's not just physical stuff - make sure you ignore the whole thing. Don't even mention it on the day.

Now this is a pickle.

Organise a nice family picnic and trip to the zoo if MrsA doesn't want a physical gift.

Then make sure there is a physical gift inside the picnic basket as well.

It's the only way.

For God's sake, don't do this! She'll never learn if you do this, then every year you will be expected to out do yourself in terms of surprise gift with the useful instructions of, "no really, don't do what you did last year, it was too much!" And "Of course I don't expect anything this year!"

:)

You've already failed by not nipping it in the bud when she uttered the phrase, telling her it's an unfair thing to say to you.

This is what I say to people in the hope that they'll stop buying me rubbish presents.

My wife's family have a habit of buying for the sake of it. I don't wear after shave... Ever... Yet I have a bathroom cabinet full of the stuff from my brother in law that I'll never use.

The wife took a dim view of me suggesting to sell them on eBay so I think they're best left in the bathroom to be forgotten about.

Rather than getting socks and aftershave for Christmas you make a list of things you like (the new Randall Munroe book, GTA game, etc).

Make it massively long and then pass it round family members. They cross stuff off and pass it to someone else. That way you get stuff you want, and it's still a surprise as you can be vague-ish (a book about socks - surprise me).

Works better for people who don't know what you like.

Since meeting Mimi I now no longer use the list, because it turns out we know what each other likes.

That sounds awful.

I don't get presents anymore on account of the adorable little moppets that now get all the attention.

I'm ok with this. Presents make me uncomfortable.

The full stop is inside the quotes on the first paragraph, and they're not only objectifying women when one of the models is a man.
