You know Kern, I couldn't actually believe that I've never seen you without a beard. I thought you must have had your dates wrong, as I thought your beard was recent.

But you look so different (in a good way) without your beard that I realise I must never have seen your whole face.

That's not just physical stuff - make sure you ignore the whole thing. Don't even mention it on the day.

Organise a nice family picnic and trip to the zoo if MrsA doesn't want a physical gift.

Then make sure there is a physical gift inside the picnic basket as well.

It's the only way.

For God's sake, don't do this! She'll never learn if you do this, then every year you will be expected to out do yourself in terms of surprise gift with the useful instructions of, "no really, don't do what you did last year, it was too much!" And "Of course I don't expect anything this year!"

You've already failed by not nipping it in the bud when she uttered the phrase, telling her it's an unfair thing to say to you.

This is what I say to people in the hope that they'll stop buying me rubbish presents.

My wife's family have a habit of buying for the sake of it. I don't wear after shave... Ever... Yet I have a bathroom cabinet full of the stuff from my brother in law that I'll never use.

Regift or raffle, surely?

The wife took a dim view of me suggesting to sell them on eBay so I think they're best left in the bathroom to be forgotten about.

What is the list?

Rather than getting socks and aftershave for Christmas you make a list of things you like (the new Randall Munroe book, GTA game, etc).

Make it massively long and then pass it round family members. They cross stuff off and pass it to someone else. That way you get stuff you want, and it's still a surprise as you can be vague-ish (a book about socks - surprise me).

Works better for people who don't know what you like.

Since meeting Mimi I now no longer use the list, because it turns out we know what each other likes.

I don't get presents anymore on account of the adorable little moppets that now get all the attention.

I'm ok with this. Presents make me uncomfortable.

Whenever I get a Christmas or birthday card from an aunt, I still shake the envelope in the hope that there's a tenner inside.
