I'm happy to let the Spanish have Florida, and it's about time Mexico got some of her land back, but do we have to give the bits west of the Mississippi back to the French?

How many people are actually executed though? I though the number was quite small (especially compared to the amount of people on Death Row).

Citations needed, but I think you're probably right. I'm sure I read somewhere also costs far more to keep someone on death row, with all the appeals and other legal formalities that have to be done before they can finally do it, than keeping them in gaol for life.

Fuck.

It appears the co-pilot locked the pilot out of the cabin and crashed it. Fucking hell. There are going to be serious ramifications and procedure changes on the back of this I expect.

I read the opposite; that is costs far more to arrange an execution (lethal injection) than to keep a prisoner for 20+ years

I'll see if I can find a source

EDIT: http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/costs-death-penalty

Doesn't look like a super reliable source, tbh.

As an abstract concept I'd expect relatively low support, yet if you gave people specific examples - should the two people who decapitated Lee Rigby be given the death penalty? - I think you'd find a lot more people in favour.

Bloody hell, that is just weird. I find it hard to believe it is "terrorists", it must have been a suicidal person who was a dick.

Can't tell, right? Could be a guy who is suicidal, could be a guy who got emailed a photo of his wife with a gun to her head and told to crash his plane. Motivation after death is a hell of a difficult thing to figure out.

sorry, I meant that the pilot was a terrorist directly, because surely you'd take it down somewhere populated?

Also, I am hearing rumours that it has been "confirmed" that one of the pilots was attempting to kick the cabin door in. No idea where that information comes from, though.

Noise from the cockpit recorder said a leak.

Bobbs - Noises on the cockpit recorder suggest that the pilot was trying to kick his way back in to the cockpit.

Cras- that has never ever happened outside of that TV series with the aliens that looked like humans and the disappearing aeroplane. And something similar in that series where Gillian Anderson's kid and a load of other posh kids got kindapped (Crisis or something?).

The Daily Mirror wrote:
Pilots 'involved in violent struggle before crash'
The investigation has now turned into a full-blown criminal enquiry today following revelations of a violent struggle on board, reports from France suggest.

Four specialists from Interpol have joined senior French detectives trying to work out why one of the pilots on the plane locked himself into the cockpit on Tuesday morning.

There were two airmen on board and they are said to have been fighting to open and close the cockpit door.

A chair is at one stage used to block the door, as the pilots shouted at each other in German, before the one outside ‘tried to smash the door down’.

The captain of the Airbus A320 had 6000 flying hours, while his co-pilot had just 600 and had only joined Germanwings, the Lufthansa affiliate, in 2013. It is not known which one was locked in the cockpit.

The revelations open up the possibility of a rogue pilot deliberately flying the plane into the French Alps and so murdering everyone on board.

Where'd they get a chair from on a plane, ffs?

Not from inside the cockpit, though.

Apparently:
Brice Robin said the identification of the bodies has started, but the second black box has still not been found. There is a transcript of the last 30 minutes of conversation between the two pilots, he says. The first 20 are amicable. Then it gets laconical. The pilot asks the co-pilot to take over. The pilot leaves for a “natural call”.

While alone the co-pilot accelerates descent. He used keys of monitoring system to speed up descent, it was voluntary. We hear a number of appeals by the pilot to get access to the cockpit but there was no access. He knocks on the door but there is not response. There is the sound of breathing from co-pilot until impact.

Translation, I'd say. The same way 'natural call' is clearly a translation of 'call of nature'

I agree that the media is seemingly reticent to call white guys terrorists, but in this case, I'd argue that terrorism always implies political motives. There are no visible political motives here, and if it had been your scenario of the guy being forced to do it surely by now some terrorist group would have claimed responsibility? Otherwise what's the point?

Going even more Hollywood, an assassination of someone on the plane? My point is really that you don't generally wake up one morning and decide to fly a plane full of people into a mountain, and we know literally nothing about possible motives right now.

It wouldn't be the first time a pilot decided to kill himself and take a plane full of passengers with him. Trying to ensure it doesn't happen is already an important consideration for airlines.

How, though? You've got to trust the person sat in the chair - unless you're going to let the plane itself overrule them.

Well, it is amongst the reasons that all US flights must have two people on the flight deck at all times.

Ultimately though, there is a degree of risk you have to take.

Remote override of the controls from the ground, which of course then shifts the risk to those with the finger on the button there....

The other option is more flight crew so a single person can't take control, which then increases costs.

Well, of course you arm the chief air stewardess as well, and in between serving First Class she can keep an eye on the armed guard and the pilots.

It is nice that they let a retired person ask a question. Usually they just have menial jobs like cleaning or stuff. I think it is good that they let him ask that.
