Make absolutely, 100% certain that there is no wool content or nylon (or any other natural protein fibre content) in your carpet before putting vinegar near it, though. Acids (vinegar, or citric acid for those of us with noses) are what are used to get dyeing agents to be colourfast in wool and all protein fibres as well as fibres with added nylon for strength. That's the exact opposite of what you'd want. To be honest, unless I knew that the carpet had no nylon or wool content I would really avoid vinegar/citric acid and the like as if you are wrong it will pretty much set it forever.

I genuinely don't understand why people want to be independent so much.

I know mali was joking when he says about being oppressed, but is there any actual reasons for independence other than 'we think we could run it better'. In which case, might as well have 60 million independent nations.

In the case of Wales and Scotland, how about the fact they've elected barely any Tory MPs in the last forty years, but have spent about half that time governed by the Conservatives? You can see how that might chafe.

And Cornwall?

Each case has its own reasons, but generally split into the following categories:

- sense of nationhood. People still like to divide themselves into communities sharing common history, folklore, traditions, and languages, and prefer to be governed by bodies that represent these interests

- divergent political or economic traditions, often in the minority.

- distance from the capital, and sense that those governing do not represent them or their needs

The north of England is much more different than the south, than Cornwall is from, say, Devon.

Very different culture to the rest of UK (even Devon which is next to it) as shown through (amongst other things but I am on phone): History of being viewed as apart from England, culture and language different from English, own traditional sports, own historical governance, now it is a Duchy which is different from counties.

Yes, historically, but much less pronounced now. Like I said, north/south divide is much more pronounced in the modern UK.

I think the difference is that Scotland and Wales have been thought of as separate countries by everyone though, not just the people who live there. When I first heard of independence for Cornwall I honestly though it was a joke someone had made up to make some point about Scottish independence, never thought there were some loons down there taking it seriously.

Powers ought to be substantial and clear, however. I remember looking at the plans for Labour's abandoned North-Eastern Assembly and they were far too confusing to even begin to understand what the body would have been for.
