I genuinely don't understand why people want to be independent so much.

I know mali was joking when he says about being oppressed, but is there any actual reasons for independence other than 'we think we could run it better'. In which case, might as well have 60 million independent nations.

In the case of Wales and Scotland, how about the fact they've elected barely any Tory MPs in the last forty years, but have spent about half that time governed by the Conservatives? You can see how that might chafe.

Each case has its own reasons, but generally split into the following categories:

- sense of nationhood. People still like to divide themselves into communities sharing common history, folklore, traditions, and languages, and prefer to be governed by bodies that represent these interests

- divergent political or economic traditions, often in the minority.

- distance from the capital, and sense that those governing do not represent them or their needs

EDIT: Oh, and long standing oppression, natch.

It is more of formally asserting identity and gaining a better form of control over what is an area fundamentally different from the rest of England.

In what way is Cornwall fundamentally different from the rest of England? Apart from in their own minds, I mean.

The north of England is much more different than the south, than Cornwall is from, say, Devon.

Very different culture to the rest of UK (even Devon which is next to it) as shown through (amongst other things but I am on phone): History of being viewed as apart from England, culture and language different from English, own traditional sports, own historical governance, now it is a Duchy which is different from counties.

Yes, historically, but much less pronounced now. Like I said, north/south divide is much more pronounced in the modern UK.

If anything the north of England should be devolved like Scotland.

I think the difference is that Scotland and Wales have been thought of as separate countries by everyone though, not just the people who live there. When I first heard of independence for Cornwall I honestly though it was a joke someone had made up to make some point about Scottish independence, never thought there were some loons down there taking it seriously.

Very much so. The Manchester experiment, if it works, should be rolled out elsewhere.
Powers ought to be substantial and clear, however. I remember looking at the plans for Labour's abandoned North-Eastern Assembly and they were far too confusing to even begin to understand what the body would have been for.

I've long been an advocate for a return to the Heptarchy.

The key part of that is that Scotland and Wales are like...actual countries (yes yes, Wales is a principality). Cornwall is a county, and has never* been thought of as a separate country.

Aye, the boundaries of any regional bodies shouldn't feel artificial. One of the problems with the current regional divisions is nobody identifies with 'the South East' - they identify with their county or their city, if at all.

Nah, it's county. There is a Duchy of Cornwall, but it's got bugger all to do with the county of Cornwall, much like the Duchy of Lancaster.

Duchy, not county

Nah, it's county. There is a Duchy of Cornwall, but it's got bugger all to do with the county of Cornwall, much like the Duchy of Lancaster.

Yes, I was about to write this - I think the duchy is merely an historic hangover, like the Duchy of Lancaster,

Mali, do you actually live in Cornwall, or did once or something? You don't seem very Cornish. I mean, I know you are talking about devolvement from England, and how the customs and people are so different, but you do come across as perhaps the most 'English' person I have ever met, so it's a bit confusing.

We grew up there. Mali and I consider ourselves naturalised ex-patriate Cornishmen.
