Rather than getting socks and aftershave for Christmas you make a list of things you like (the new Randall Munroe book, GTA game, etc).

Make it massively long and then pass it round family members. They cross stuff off and pass it to someone else. That way you get stuff you want, and it's still a surprise as you can be vague-ish (a book about socks - surprise me).

Works better for people who don't know what you like.

Since meeting Mimi I now no longer use the list, because it turns out we know what each other likes.

I don't get presents anymore on account of the adorable little moppets that now get all the attention.

I'm ok with this. Presents make me uncomfortable.

Whenever I get a Christmas or birthday card from an aunt, I still shake the envelope in the hope that there's a tenner inside.
