I'm assuming there will be an investigation into the prosecutor next, and then after that comes back as "everything is fine guv, honest" there will be a million dollar lawsuit from the family against either the police department or the cop, because America.

There is still a lot of racism deep rooted in that area of the US as well, I think at lot of them haven't got over the fact Lincoln stopped slavery and Kennedy stopped segregation yet. Or for that fact the they lost the Civil war in the South .

The Texan LBJ did far more for civil rights than Kennedy did, although JFK's career was cut short.
Were it not for Vietnam, LBJ would be remembered as one of the great presidents.

After the war, things were, compartively, good for the black populace in the south (other than the poverty, poor education, general racism etc). It was only when the troops were removed after the end of Reconstruction in the 1870s that the old order began to re-assert itself, leading to the century of oppression. The gutting of the 14th (equality under the law) and 15th amendments (voting rights) in the late 19th/early 20th century is one of the biggest tragedies of US history.

That subconversation started about Tamir Rice though, I think.

The Policeman who did the shooting has "resigned"

Find it hard to believe he has just quit, as the US do look after their law enforcement people. He is also done nothing wrong technically.

He must have been paid off.

The latest one is absurd. Video evidence of an illegal choke hold, victim not aggressive, not committing any crime whatsoever, coroner rules homicide via choking...

... not even worth a trial.

Just... what?

Incredible, isn't it? What I never understand is the sheer scale of numbers like these, and the fact that so much of the US can just look at it without seeing a glaring issue that needs addressing.

I think what it indicates isn't so much a problem with racism as such though*, but more a general bumming of police types.

* - that's not to say that there isn't one, just that that's not what's at play here.

What Mr Dave said.

I can't really believe (and perhaps this is just me being too naive) that a policeman would be stood there thinking "this guy's black, I've got a badge and a gun, WOOHOO, I CAN SHOOT ME SOME BLACK DUDE".

I think there's more an issue of police officers being badly trained, bullying cocks, and juries siding with them cos they're the law and must have had a reason to act the way they did.

There's a massive government thing going on with Cleveland police as they have been found to basically be absolute cunts and you're safer off without calling them as they are as likely to punch you as help you.

These are the same ones that shot a 12 year old, with the officer doing he shooting having previously been fired for being not competent to hold a weapon.

"Hey boss, you know how we're taking a series famous for being military shooters, and we're respinning it as a cop game?"
"Sure?"
"Well, you know how there's currently a massive debate in American society over the militarisation of the police and police brutality, particularly focused on white police officers killing black men?"
"Sure!"
"Why don't we make the cover look like a black man about to shoot a load of cops?"
"Great idea! That'll get 'em talking, and they told me at MBA School that there's no such thing as bad publicity!"

I mentioned on Twitter today that it may be wise for EA to delay releasing their game that features militarised police v civilians due to current events in America. Ended up being called 'pro-censorship'.

Their cops should all be made to wear helmets with cameras on them. If it wasn't for the video this would have probably got two inches of coverage in the paper local to where it happened.

I can't even imagine the thought process where someone thinks that a man, having been pulled over for a traffic violation, requires shooting.

The sad thing is that this almost certainly happens on a fairly regular basis, but this cop was 'unlucky' that someone caught him on camera.

Without that video he would have avoided prosecution entirely. Shameful.

I just watched it, the cop lets 5 of more shots off and the guy falls down (I assume dead)

Then he starts telling him to get his hands behind his back and that he was under arrest!

Shocking that a cop would let that many shots off at that range when no gun had been pulled by the other guy.

Not really that shocking. US police have killed more people in the last month than the UK police have killed in the last 100 years.

Or something like that.

Technically they've also killed more people in the last month than the UK police have killed in the last 100 years too. Also the last 113 years. Your correction is invalid, Sir.

It says something about the world we live in that my main thoughts from that video were "They got a chopper out to film a stolen horse?!" and the second thought was "That's a well-behaved horse."

Another "good" stat is that police have killed more Americans since 9/11 than the combined losses of those attacks and all US soldiers since 2001.

In my limited understanding*, the Sheriff in most 'cities' is an elected office and almost anyone can become a deputy. The rules vary.
