How come I don't feel any better off then?
Still, at least we can all look forward to interest rate rises in the near future.

Theoretically it's what we should have once interest rates rise because then it'll be worth saving, despite the fact all our spare cash will go on more expensive mortgage repayments.

We've been out of recession for a long time now.

The headline is wrong. We're out of the depression now, with GDP (total) today the same as it was the day it went wrong.

However, that is gross GDP, not GDP per capita, and with population increase we're still 5% down per head. I think the GDP figure in this context is actually inflation adjusted.

Next year, however, when the GDP basis of calculation changes, then what happened today actually happened this time last year.

All clear? Good.

Sure, but I didn't know how else to describe it. Officially the economy is now worth more than it was before the recession hit, so not only is it no longer going downwards, it's higher than it ever was... apparently.

Impromptu street parties are being held up and down the land. Crowds are gathering outside Buckingham Palace for George Osbourne and the Royal Family to wave from the balcony.

Yay. Probably.

If things are improving, it'll take a while for the boom to work its way through the economic system and we start to feel better. Whether this is timed for May 2015 or not is another matter.

Anyway, back to the OP - because you've spunked all your money on weddings and cars? ;)

My bank balance has loved this recession. I'm a bit concerned about it coming to an end, frankly.
