Sorry to post about another tech issue, but I haven't been able to connect to the internet on my PC for the last few days. My router shows up under the available networks at first, but after the initial attempt to connect (and the "Cannot connect to this network" message) it says "No networks found" and won't let me try again. I can get the router to appear again by running the diagnostic tool, but I still can't connect, and the tool concludes that I haven't actually attempted to. Other devices in the house can connect with no problems. Is there anything else I should be trying? Thanks!

It isn't exactly the same, but my mum couldn't connect to the internet at all on her PC and it was due to her McAfee virus scanner being expired. Might be worth checking that sort of thing.

Do you connect via LAN or WAN? If LAN, make sure the network card drivers are up to date. If WAN, the wireless adapter drivers.

If they all show as fine then go to Control Panel, Network and Internet, Network Connections (you haven't stated what OS so I'm assuming Win7). In here right click on the relevant LAN connection and select 'Diagnose'. It'll try to automatically find out what's wrong and fix it.

If this doesn't fix it. Go to Start and type 'cmd' into the search box and press enter. In this box type 'ipconfig /all'. It'll show a number of different adapters depending on what you've got hardware-wise. Look for the relevant connection (LAN or WAN) and see what the IPv4 address is. It should be something like 192.168.0.5. If it starts with 169.254.x.x then this has been self-assigned because it can't get an IP address from your default gateway (router). Take a note of the default gateway address (it'll be on the same subnet so something like 192.168.0.1) and try to ping it from the cmd window:

'ping 192.168.0.1'

If you can ping that then you can see the router. If not and all other devices are working, it's possible it's not able to assign it an IP address via DHCP. At this point it may be worth trying to set a static address in the Control Panel.

Go to Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center, then Change adapter settings. Right click on your desired connection, then click on Properties. Select 'Internet Protocol Version 4' and click Properties.

It should have 'Obtain an IP address automatically' selected here. If so, change it to 'Use the following IP address' and choose something on the same subnet as your default gateway. So if your default gateway is 192.168.0.1/24 (Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0) then you can use anything from 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254. I'd pick something like: 192.168.0.50. Obviously change the default gateway and subnet mask to what is listed in your ipconfig.

You can try those settings like that, but if it still doesn't work, perhaps try using Google's DNS servers if you don't mind Gaywood backdooring into your computer and looking at all your photos:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

That'll do for now, I guess. If none of that works then throw your computer in the bin and buy a Mac.

Thanks very much - appreciate the detailed response. Sorry, forgot to mention that I'm on Windows 8 and connecting via wireless LAN. I'm stuck at the pinging stage, now. 'Ipconfig/all' doesn't show me an IPv4 address. The closest thing it shows is the 'physical address' (18-CF-5E-00-2A-34). I tried pinging all of the addresses you mentioned but nothing came back. I've also tried running 'Diagnose' a few more times but it just concludes that I have no preferred wireless networks (I chose 'forget network' at one point and I suppose it won't store the network key again until it actually connects - I'm entering it each time), or that I haven't tried to connect to anything, and doesn't suggest anything further.

Bin time?

Edit: shit, Bobbyaro might be onto something too. This PC does have an expired 'McAfee LiveSafe' thing on it...

Are you near the router? Might be worth trying an ethernet cable - you can then ascertain if it's your wireless adapter that's at fault. It's obviously not the router as you say other devices are working.

The fact you can see the MAC address of your WLAN adapter from your computer doesn't mean anything, I'm afraid, because this information isn't being transmitted over the network - it's purely local. Maybe go into Device Manager, disable the WLAN adapter and re-enable it. I think the issue might be here.

Can you take a photo of your ipconfig output and post it here? It might help to diagnose the problem.

I've disabled/enabled the network adapter with the device manager a few times, aye. The router's downstairs (though well within range), but trying an Ethernet cable sounds like a good idea. Thanks again!

When it says 'media disconnected' this means it's not working - it says that next to your wireless adapter settings.

What happens if you type in 'ipconfig /release' into the cmd box? Try 'ipconfig /renew' if that works. It probably won't though.

Try downloading the latest driver for your WLAN adapter. Right click on the WLAN connection in Network Connections (control panel), click on Properties. Click on Configure, Details tab. Select Hardware Ids from the drop down list. Do a search for that ID online and download the driver.

If this doesn't work then do a system restore - your computer is fucked.

I'd suspect hardware failure. I believe it's a common time of year for it.

It could well be, but it's worth ruling out some other things first rather than just buying a new wireless card.

Stupid question: you've not disabled your network adapters have you? Look for device manager in control panel, make sure there are no red crosses...

Huh, it's connected now. The system restore didn't seem to have any effect, but I removed McAfee (er, again) and had Windows Defender 'take over' and run a quick scan, and now everything seems fine. It connected before the scan had finished, in fact.
