Do you have a button on your chest that shrinks your arm? If so, the dog has just pressed it.

Why is deflation a de facto bad thing? Are there not benefits for the ordinary Joe in things getting cheaper? Or is it always accompanied by job losses, end of the world etc?

As far as I know, it's because it discourages people spending.

indeed, which does sound counter-intuitive at first glance. It's also a tricksy sod for central banks to remedy.

I can understand it's a bad thing as it makes debt more expensive, ultimately. And we need constant growth due to population expansion.

But for a static population in a low debt state, lack of inflation, or deflation, shouldn't be a bad thing, should it?

I invoke the ghost of Sir Humphrey Appleby, who would be able to prove, beyond any doubt whatsoever, that whatever the government does, with the best of intentions, will just make matters worse.

Did not know that if you press "I'm feeling lucky" without putting in any search terms on Google that it shows you all the past Google icon things. They're all pretty spiffy.

I need to move a piano. From my storage unit to my new house.

The only quote I've had so far was £325 which seems like quite a lot for a short journey, and for a move that involves no stairs.

So - anyone here ever moved a piano before and can give me some tips? :P

We moved a piano into our house, if it's an upright it's not especially difficult, it'll need re-tuning anyway just hire a van with a tail lift and get a couple of people to help.

Did you hire a trolley to wheel it around on or anything?

No, it has its own little wheels and it was only a really short distance where it would have actually been any use anyway.

Hire a local "man with a van" and tell him what it is, and make it his problem.
It'll need tuning anyway, so no need to be too careful.

Also... Do you live anywhere near Kidderminster Gaz? I know a man with a van over there and he may be able to do it.

Yeah, definitely not worth hiring a van and struggling with it yourself if you can get it done for that. We had the van anyway since we were moving all our stuff into our house.

edit: removed kisses from the end of the post. I've just been having an email conversation with my wife. :DD

Independent hotels can be ...... odd. The office usually book us in to travelodges or similar budget places, but it seems there was no room at any of our usual haunts in Stevenage, so I'm in a small hotel with themed rooms. My room has a photo of The Lone Ranger & Tonto, and other random cowboys and indians, along with a couple of dream catchers.

There's also a lot of birdsong this morning, which is nice, but the owl screech outside my window at about midnight was a little disturbing.

House buying is an emotional rollercoaster and sometimes I want to get off. Also, getting a mortgage this side of 'The Financial Crisis' is a bit of a trauma, isn't it?! Jesus. I thought they'd be throwing money at us! We've had to sell our souls to the devil to get the amount the bank says we need.

And as if the usual pre-contract part wasn't bad enough, our purchase is subject to planning consent so even when the ball is well and truly rolling, it could all come to an abrupt halt and it's all completely out of our control.

Not to mention the cost just to get it to the stage where you actually have a house to move into!

Mortgage adviser dude is mostly positive so far, just got a ton of paperwork to drag together and then hopefully find a mortgage company who will accept my patchy additional money from self-employment as actual income ?:|

Exposing my Nordic roots! It's actually the Victorian age. The program is something about 6 celebrities who are transported back in time to find out what conditions were like for workers back then.

Basic civility news now!

Oxford's Twitter users are the least sweary in England, and third in the UK, behind those Shetland and Orkney islanders.
