At a guess, Logarius. Despite my best attempts to get you to fight him.

I found him to be the most bastardly hard boss of the main game.
And the entirity of upper cathedral ward. Which contains the boss mosy people found the most bastardly hard boss (but I killed first try)

Big Alien and his minions or fucking piranha plant and chain chomps evil offspring?

I don't think anyone could find Big Alien hard.

I don't know which key you're talking about. I don't remember any buyable keys. The key you can find is called the upper cathedral ward key though.

And yeah, it dumps you into NG+ immeditately after the ending. Except for Chalice dungeons which don't change in any way.

It's the "Hunter Chief Emblem".

Oh, that.

Yeah, that's fairly useless. Lets you get into the main area of cathedral ward without killing the blood starved beast.

After Zaphod's note in the Bargains thread, I'm umming and ahhing over getting this, given, by all accounts, it's a brilliant, rewarding game.

However, as someone who has tried and failed to get into Dark Souls several times (not persevering beyond the 1-1.5 hour mark), with the latest attempt scuppered by framerate issues on the 360, would this likely be a waste of £25?

Is it simply not for everyone?

Or is it for everyone, provided they're willing to graft and give it considerable time and attention?

It's not for everyone. If you don't like a challenge, or exploration, it's not for you. But it is excellent if it is for you. But still not as good as Dark Souls.

I can't comment on framerates, as I don't tend to notice them. So it means little when I say I never had any problems with any of them.

Worth a go. It never really pulled me in, I got fucked off with it. I don't have all that much time for playing games so what time I do get I want to be seeing something new rather than eking out precious progress after clearing the same area for the fifteenth time.

markg, I suspect my experiences may end up chiming with yours then. I have very little time for gaming these days, snatched 30 minutes before bed time normally. I fear such circumstances mean these kinds of games are out of bounds for me.

Which is a shame.

I thought it was way better than Dark Souls, if that helps.

Did you make a big HULK SMASH character or a zippy little ninja one?

Because unless you did the latter, it does somewhat suck.

I did a zippy ninja one. I'm maybe not zippy ninja enough. My issue with all games like this is I have little patience with 'flawlessly execute every action because if you fuck up you're dead and have to retry' because I'm just not good enough, I guess. Same reason I never liked the early Resident Evil games - when I shoot at stuff, I miss quite often. I use the 'quantity has a quality all of its own' school of combat.

Having said that, I have a sword cane thing that appears to be made of meccano and turns into a whip or some shit, which is about the coolest thing I've ever seen.

Ah, you've chosen the weapon that was clearly described as being difficult to use :)

Try starting again with the saw cleaver.

Using it is fine, as long as you're not nearby to a wall or something. I just can't stand that whole 'kill everyone all over again. And again. And again' thing it shares with Dark Souls

I would like to back up Mark's opinion. I love a challenge and hard games in general, but Demon's Souls and this just didn't click with me. I've never played the Dark Souls games though.

It's bloody difficult this when you've had an extended break away from it.

It took all my concentration, finding a good way to spam an attack, a lot of wasted Blood echoes and about 30 deaths before Gatling gun cunt died. Then, apparently, it's ok to shove the fucking blood beast cunt behind him. In a confined space. In the dark. He could fuck off for a bit so I went over to see the boss cunt and the cunt cunted me in two hits.

Goddamn game is infuriating. Must practice.

Maria from the DLC must be one of my favourite fights in Bloodborne. Infinitely fair yet hard as nails. All the nipping about and dashing in and out was proper brilliant.

Then I thought "that DLC was good but a lot shorter than the Dark Souls terrific DLC."

Then another big area opened up. Dang! It's good this.

I don't know about you, but I thought that was brilliant co-op. Easy to get into with the password system, not too much hanging around (and the odd instant connection) , not too much slow down (even though there was some especially with all the nonsense going on) and just generally a barrel of laughs when we weren't getting smashed to pieces time and time again by the big bastard boss.

I especially enjoyed our GANK SQUAD getting pummelled and almost wiped out by a lone invader.

I've got 3 things left to do before I'm completely done with the DLC and can add it to the Finish 52, if you want in:

Blood Beast in the dark.
Two fish giants in the well.
Last boss.

The last two are available close to the last lamp. I'll gladly repay the favour with any bosses you want deadid.

I were a little crap during that last fight. Watching it back, You could tell my concentration was lagging a little.

Plus I'd forgotten that was the one I experimented with the bow blade. Which was utterly shit. And the one you cancelled my backstab. Tsh.

Started Bloodborne last night.

I managed an hour or so.

I chose a character with a violent past (I am from the north afterall).

I chose a natty beard and burns combo that's on the right side of the Victorian cad/hipster divide.

I chose the saw and blunderbuss.

It took an age to equip my weapons (as per Zaphod earlier in the thread).

I have made a couple of trips back to the Hunters Dream to sell my blood echoes for better gear.

So I'm basically still at the start. Killed a few manky dudes. There's a big gathering of them in some town square that I'm going to go and fuck up. After that, who knows.

I'm enjoying it, feels less obtuse than Dark Souls, which I never made further than 30 minutes in. I'm much more comfortable with dying in this, I think.

In this regard I read a helpful description of Bloodborne the other day: think of it is a roguelike. Death is inevitable in every session, but with each death your chances are enhanced.

Will see how long I last.

Dying is totally part of the game mechanics. I took part in Return to Yharnam, and it was great.

It's one of those 'get better each time' games. I found Bloodborne felt slightly fairer than Souls games, because you are better equipped to respond offensively to any nasty surprises.

Which starter melee weapon did you choose? I went with the Saw Cleaver. The Axe is supposed to be good too. The cane/whip thing is a bit more niche.

I took the saw first time, cane second time, as
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
you can pick up a slightly better saw early into the game
.

Once I had got a bit (lot) harder, I switched to Ludwig's Holy Blade and never looked back.
