I'd really like to try one of these games but I very much suspect they'd be too hard for me so I'm not willing to actually buy one. Whatever happened to bloody demos eh?

I tried and failed to play Dark Souls. Must have played over those first 30 minutes at least a dozen times. And each time I stopped because I...I don't know why. I think I was overcome by that fear I was missing things. I was doing things wrong. I was getting a half-fat experience, which I felt was a waste of the 30-odd hours the game would demand from me.

All of which I know is stupid, and large part of a souls game is trying, failing, exploring, discovering, muddling through your own way. I don't like hand-holding, far from it. I just don't think I'm the right player for the game. It's not you, Mr Souls, it's me. You dirty bastard.

Demon's Souls was on PS+ a while back. Shame you missed it cause I reckon you'd win some record for the time taken before you delete it from your system.

There was an interview with a lady in the games industry who said something along the lines of demos lose them sales so they do not want to do them anymore but buggered if I can remember who or when.

Nah, I got shot of my PS3 and Xbox to make room for the PS4. Dark Souls 2 will probably turn up on PS+ for the PS4 eventually but I might not have a sub at that point. Or I could pirate a PC games for the first time in about ten years! Except that I don't really care that much.

I don't wish to sound rude (but I'm going to anyway), but if you found TLoU too hard, don't even bother with these games.

I'd concur. If you don't like games that will repeatedly kick you on the teeth until you've learned how to be good enough to stop them, it's not going to appeal, regardless of how much you might like the world and the like.

Well, yeah, I totally assume this will be the case which is why I haven't bothered picking any of them up at any point. It would just be nice to at least have tried them out given how much of a talking point this series is in general over the last few years.

As for that evergreen 'ha, Bamba's shit at games' meme, it's possibly worth noting that TLoU is the only game I've ever had to drop down to easy to finish since, well, since I can ever remember. So I don't know if I am generally massively cack-handed at games or was just frustrated by TLoU specifically for some reason. Not that I have an issue with that being the case if it is, I'm just not entirely convinced given that I do finish the vast majority of games I play and I do it on the normal difficulty level.

Fake edit: actually, that's not true. The other games I've given up on due to, partially at least, the difficulty have been Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Dante's Inferno and Guacamelee so there's that evidence for the prosecution.

Of those, the only one I've played was Guacamelee. Which I also gave up on. Not so much as it was too hard, but more I just didn't much like the fighting style.

I didn't enjoy the combat style much either which was a contributing factor to my frustration. There were also a couple of platforming sections I had to practise over and over and over again to get through where you had to chain a load of different techniques together in what felt like a very small time window. I wasn't very far through at that point and assumed it was just going to get more ridiculous as time went on so just gave up. Which is a shame because after the sheer joy that was Shadow Complex I thought Guacamelee might be a genuinely decent new metroidvania to get stuck into but it wasn't for me.

There's definitely a few puzzles that need lightning reflexes. As a DmC aficionado I was capable of pulling them off (just about). There's no penalty for death (as far as I remember) so it was never that bad anyway cause you'd revert to the room entrance.

Guacamelee was the best non-Castlevania mmetroidvania i've ever played, and it had some of the best boss battles.

Interesting that so many people didn't liked it.

I got mine yesterday - died a lot and really struggled with a very basic point - i will put it in spoilers below but around your starting weapons :

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
At the start you have no weapons - you face the first enemy and will probably die
This puts you in a graveyard and a you can then view the various notes about gameplay and choose your two weapons

*this does not equip them*

I spent forever going through menus / inventory / pressing every button but could not work out how to get my weapons in my hands - I wondered if it was a bug and re-started (the same) - wondered if i needed the multiplayer patch (i was playing off the disk while it downloaded) - nope - and ended up looking up online where most of the advice was 'you dont need weapons you should kill the first enemy with your hands cause its supposed to be hard !'

What I was missing is to equip a weapon you pull up the side menu (press option) , move the cursor on this screen to your 'arms' section , press X and then moving left and right you can select a weapon (press X and there is a red blood smear on it) and then it will be equipped

Oh and 2.6 gig patch which you'll need to install before online is enabled

Reminds me of dark souls, where one of the intro instructions teaches you about how to do a certain move with a weapon. Only if you're a dex character it gives you a weapon that you can't actually do that move with...

I don't know how long I'd been playing (an hour maybe) and I'd finally made it past the first section and I'd been finding my feet when I'm in the big warehouse bit.

I'm totally lost.

I'd left open about three possible routes to explore and despite being super careful I'd finally died. So I've got a bunch of Souls knocking about and I wanted them back. So I run off back the way I came dodging the wandering parties and through this hole in the fence I'd accidentally found; back to the warehouse.

The video is just me trying to get my souls back. Which I do, then I get clobbered again by some fella and fall off somewhere. I think I'm dead I manage the fall ok. I'm totally lost again.

The video doesn't really do my feelings any justice at this point. I'd only just managed to get my souls back and the last thing I wanted was to fall somewhere new without exploring the surroundings first.

Then that fella jumps down after me.

He almost does me over and I'm shitting my pants trying to hold onto these souls dogging backwards; fucking around, until I finally get the better of him. So I survey the surroundings and wander along this new area. Something's ahead. Two big fuck off rats. I've no idea if they're going to cause me any bother. I'm wondering whether to take on two at a time. I switch my axe to Big-Fuck-Off-Axe mode pondering the best way to approach them. I'm thinking about going back. Shit. They heard me messing about and they're at me. Thankfully they prove easy enough and some big handed axe moves clear the way.

The whole thing shit me up.

The video stops here but after a bit of wandering and managing to find the way back up top I decide to go all the way back to the beginning and explore the other avenues.

Not having a shield is actually terrifying as every room and very corner you turn there's the possibility that some cunt will come charging over and score an unwelcome first hit, and maybe two. The firearm might be there to stagger an enemy but it's bloody difficult to get right. I can't do it at all with any consistency, plus the ammo is limited to 20 so it's not as though you can go practising willy nilly.

Took me all night to even find the first boss as well. I'd totally missed the bridge altogether until it was the last thing that needed exploring. And yes, I'd knocked a slither of energy off it before I was wasted. Facking thing. Looked awesome though.

In fact, it's well and truly got its hooks in me. the maze, the baddies (what great voice acting for the human baddies at the beginning), the atmosphere (one room in particular really got me: the one with the old man in the chair. That bit was great but also the sound - how you can hear two blokes upstairs talking to each other. Then you get up there and, well, it's a small thing but it's brill) and so on. When, and if, I get click with the combat and the bosses (always a nightmare in Souls games) this is probably gonna be ace. You just know it when you start, don'tcha?

I'm maybe about 2 hours in - and died /lost all my souls (okay not souls echo's or whatever) so many times

Yes I've been around that warehouse a few times - it has a number of exits

I wandered for ages up ladders and down ladders then found a big fuck off guy who killed me

I thought - i'll never find that again but followed the same type of route - found and killed him - then found myself back at the start ! (shortcut opened)

Again more wandering around - found the first boss (and died many times) - leveled up (and thats bloody hard to do) - have upgraded both my weapons once - and on my last go I had cleared out virtually all of the first section before returning to level up again

I think i'm level 15 now (you start at 10) and have about 3 different areas / directions to go and search other than the first boss - which i've had to maybe 1/2 way down now but i still dont think i'm ready to get past him

I have already had a few points where i'm thinking what the f*ck am i doing - and I'd say its definitely not for the faint hearted but i'm looking forward to finding out what else is around and then finally taking down the first boss

I gotto that Church/Warehouse, papped it on the stairs when I heard a 'biggie' so went through that window. Met a lovely NPC in a plague mask that gave me some 'sendy homey no lose bloods' things. Couldn't find a safe way down so used one to get back to Hunters Dream via the last torch save thing. Upgraded my bonesaw and bought Hunters clobber from the font pixie.

Best baddie so far are the crawling crows that didn't shit me up at all when then awkwardly jumped up in the air. Loved the codger in the wheelchair too :)

Can't wait to get stuck back in.

Quick tip: lanterns (I think) show where you can talk to folk in the buildings. There's one immediately in front of the first bonfire, I mean, lamp thingy. Right. In. Front.

I'd been passed it literally tens of times and not noticed.

Do you know how to level up ?

(its another obtuse one - details in spoiler below)

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
When you have either used a mind skull thing or met the cleric beast (not beaten it) you will have 1 point of 'insight' (top corner below your echos)

If you go back to the hunters dream the doll is now alive and if you speak to it you can level up

I accidentally stumbled on that. The first time you meet the boss and die it automatically puts you back to the lodge where the doll has woken up.

I was nursing 5000 souls up until then and lost the lot after that.

1) Call for co-op help.
2) NEVER LOCK ON. You need to roll about.
3) Get behind him or get alongside his thighs to execute your move.
4) You heard me - NEVER STAND IN FRONT OF HIM. That's the danger zone. Found yourself standing in front of him? POUND THE DODGE BUTTON NOW.
4) You've got twenty health bottles. Dont be afraid to use them all. Get down past half health - roll away and use one. Or two.
5) You know if you hold R2 down your blade/axe will flash for your big slash/smash move? Use it a lot. In fact, go almost exclusively for this move.

Do this and you'll be fine. It can take about 5 minutes or so.

Here's me when I did it. Sharing videos is ace. Just skip to 7:45.

And at 5:05 you'll find out what happens if you stand in front of him.

It all looks a bit washed out in the videos. Is that to do with compression, or is that what it looks like?

Compression - it looks much better on the system (although it is a very dull / dark colour palate)

I tried this last night - run the bell - lost a point of insight and no bugger showed up (or at least none that I could find)

We'll blow me.

I was just going to pick up my blood, get home and turn it off when I smashed him off the roof. Hilarious.
