I don't dislike it, or the Aussie version before it was canned. It's not as good as ours at its best, but then it's aimed at a different audience.

Post subject:  Re: Clarkson

I seen to recall that some of the setpiece stuff is effectively conceived and produced by the motor manufacturers themselves. So when James May does a piece on 'Which goes faster down the side of a mountain, a Subaru Impreza driven by a rally driver or three nuns paragliding?" then what happens is that Subaru did that whole thing, took presenters from 5 or 6 different car programmes around the world to film their bits against the backdrop and the race, such that you saw, didn't exactly take place.

Could be wrong as I've got nowhere to point at to show this to be factually based.

The Australian version was SHIT, because they'd got three presenters together that were OK individually but together were trying too hard to be the Aussie May/Hammond/Clarkson.

Lighthearted car reviews, some tomfoolery and set-piece japes should translate quite well across regions, but trying to simply 'be' May/Hammond/Clarkson didn't work out, not least because those characters had become a bit too stale and predictable well beforehand.

If they are going to relaunch the show, they should just go mad and grab anyone they find wandering round the BBC...Top Gear presented by John Humphries, Sandy Toksvig and Christopher Biggins.

I'd watch, which hasn't been the case recently.

Why not, you could even have two permanent hosts (say off the top of my head Mike and Ed from Wheeler Dealers) and a random guest host each week...one that's a confirmed car nut such as: Chris Evans, Pink Floyd Drummer bloke, Rowan Atkinson, Jodie Marsh, JK...even old 5th Gear hosts.

Not Mike and Ed, you could get John Torode and Gregg Wallace to present it!

I suggested Rowan Atkinson the other day to my father-in-law, I think he could be really good on it.

Also that Vicki Butler Henderson posh woman.

And what was your man called? Tiff Needell? Didn't he actually used to present Top Gear?

It is odd. He may not be banned from the BBC, but I'm sure a small amount of leaning could/should (regardless of your views as to whether he should have been sacked) have been applied to not make a mockery of it.

When Angus was kicked off from HIGNFY, I recall that it was Hislop and Merton who said that his position was untenable and forced the issue. Wonder if they will do the same this time?

Angus wasn't fired because of what he did, though (fucking prostitutes). He was fired because guests on HIGNFY would just constantly call him out on it, and the show wouldn't have worked. Top Gear would arguably work better.

I watched HIGNFY the episode that came out after all that hit the papers on Sunday, coincidentally, and it's still fucking funny.

:this:

Well, I didn't watch it on Sunday but watched it fairly recently and it was face-wettingly good. In fact, if you have a spare £3.92 knocking around, you could do far, far worse than picking up the Best of DVD. Which is not only relentlessly funny, it's pleasantly nostalgic and perfect fodder for putting on when your folks have come to visit on a Saturday night.

Angus made some jokes about Merton and Quentin's break up which Merton never forgave him for, I believe.

Hislop is just a very Victorian chap.

Maybe he was already signed up do it so they thought it alright to let any existing agreements proceed? He has been a presenter multiple times before and they must need to line all this stuff up well in advance.

I don't quite know what you mean by 'Sailing woman' (she might have sailed... i don't know) but to me she is primarily a comedian. I remember her from shows like Number 73 when I was a kid, but she does a lot of panel show stuff now, like HIGNFY, QI, etc. I think she also often used to be on Call My Bluff for a long time, though I may have misremembered that. I think she's Danish, but seems to have been on British Tv forever.

She's really intelligent, sharp and witty, and not girly or giggly. She's one of the stronger, more intelligent female comedians, and I really like her wit.

I'd be somewhat amazed that if hat trick lined up hitler* as a presenter then the BBC wouldn't be able to exercise some fit and proper clause to veto that decision without need to pay compensation.

I associate her with boats too - I'm sure I remember seeing her on TV, often on yachts wearing gaudily coloured waterproof jackets. I just can't remember anything else about it.
