I mean, if you're going to let him host a BBC show, why not make it the really popular one that he's rather good at?

It is odd. He may not be banned from the BBC, but I'm sure a small amount of leaning could/should (regardless of your views as to whether he should have been sacked) have been applied to not make a mockery of it.

When Angus was kicked off from HIGNFY, I recall that it was Hislop and Merton who said that his position was untenable and forced the issue. Wonder if they will do the same this time?

Angus wasn't fired because of what he did, though (fucking prostitutes). He was fired because guests on HIGNFY would just constantly call him out on it, and the show wouldn't have worked. Top Gear would arguably work better.

I watched HIGNFY the episode that came out after all that hit the papers on Sunday, coincidentally, and it's still fucking funny.

I heard that Angus was shown the door because Merton and Hislop despised him.

Well, there's that - but the excuse they used was that the show wouldn't work :)

:this:

Well, I didn't watch it on Sunday but watched it fairly recently and it was face-wettingly good. In fact, if you have a spare £3.92 knocking around, you could do far, far worse than picking up the Best of DVD. Which is not only relentlessly funny, it's pleasantly nostalgic and perfect fodder for putting on when your folks have come to visit on a Saturday night.

Angus made some jokes about Merton and Quentin's break up which Merton never forgave him for, I believe.

Hislop is just a very Victorian chap.

Maybe he was already signed up do it so they thought it alright to let any existing agreements proceed? He has been a presenter multiple times before and they must need to line all this stuff up well in advance.

With regards to Clarkson, I think he should have been fired and not be back on BBC for a good while (if at all), he physically assaulted a colleague. BBC are pretty pathetic here imo.

I don't quite know what you mean by 'Sailing woman' (she might have sailed... i don't know) but to me she is primarily a comedian. I remember her from shows like Number 73 when I was a kid, but she does a lot of panel show stuff now, like HIGNFY, QI, etc. I think she also often used to be on Call My Bluff for a long time, though I may have misremembered that. I think she's Danish, but seems to have been on British Tv forever.

She's really intelligent, sharp and witty, and not girly or giggly. She's one of the stronger, more intelligent female comedians, and I really like her wit.

I'm hoping it's just to give Hislop and Merton a chance to absolutely rip the shit out of him.

They excoriated Deayton back in the day.

You should listen to The News Quiz on Radio 4; she's the chairperson on that and is very good.

I'd be somewhat amazed that if hat trick lined up hitler* as a presenter then the BBC wouldn't be able to exercise some fit and proper clause to veto that decision without need to pay compensation.

I associate her with boats too - I'm sure I remember seeing her on TV, often on yachts wearing gaudily coloured waterproof jackets. I just can't remember anything else about it.

It's unlikely that anyone will know what I am talking about, but there was a mechanics/ garage in NW London with a large painted mural of three people - two men (one had a beard) and in the middle of the two men was Sandy Toksvig.

I remember looking it up on the internet some years later and not really finding anything out about it, but I think it may have been somewhere near the Cricklewood area (though my geography is rubbish... it may have been down towards Kensal Green/Kensal Rise.

Sandy Tokks-fig fans might be interested to know that Call My Bluff was one of the TV shows pulled out of the archive for the "classic quiz show" group on iPlayer: #group=p02nm7g8">http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0 ... p=p02nm7g8

Slightly off-topic but guess it belongs in this thread. I have been keeping up with the latest season of HIGNFY on iPlayer and it is indeed still really funny and relevant.

No idea if the odd episodes I was referring to were the 'downs' and I was just getting unlucky, or I was in a bad mood or something, but the three episodes I've seen this season have all been great - with both Hislop and Merton on excellent form, good guests, and fine hosts.

Also, Victoria Coren, deffo would. (She was host last week. And one of the guests this week was Camilla Long. Would. In a posh sort of way.)

I can't quite get my head around anyone who insists on painting those beautiful Ferraris white, but then, perhaps its merely jealousy on my part...

Let's be honest, the minute he said he 'wasn't interested' it was always going to be him, wasn't it? Bet he negotiated an eye-watering fee; he's made a fair few quid out of Auntie over the years.

After seeing him and Clarkson on the TFI Friday one off last week it became a bit more obvious he was in the chair for it.

I liked stuff like TFI Friday at the start but he did become a bit of dick towards the end and sort of self imploded career wise.

He has come back well though, I don't listen to radio very much but by all accounts his is a good show, will be interesting to see what he is like on TV after years of not seeing him.

Wonder were it leaves Clarkson for any rival shows also it wasn't mentioned if the other two would join Chris Evans
