No, quite right Curio. I think the point being made that is that she, more than anyone, should appreciate that cheap newspaper accusations should not be taken at face value.

She is a typically pathetic politician though, clinging to any bandwagon that she thinks will curry favour with the public.

It never started as an insult and was never meant to be one. The PC brigade has took an old fashioned word and made such a fuss that it’s something that black and white people have no idea what to do with it.

Black people sit pissing themselves laughing at Chris Rock so they have no cause to take offense at the word. You can’t have it both ways.

If you put black or white in front of any standard insult if far more offensive that honky or nigger

I'm kinda astonished at your understanding of this. Of course you can have it both ways. The word was used as a racial insult by white people who controlled and subjugated black people. Those people reclaimed the word to strip it off it's power to control and humiliate them. That happens countless times by oppressed groups. And in doing so, white people have lost the ability to say it because of it's use during slavery and oppression.

It's not about fairness, or PC (gone mad) it's about being civil and kind and caring. That and the fact that part of the reason we sit here in the developed word, at the top of the global food chain is because we founded our nation on the exploitation of others. And pretty much the only cummupance for that is that the white people in our society cant say one word.

You can pretend that this is all in the past, but it clearly isn't. The average wealth of white people versus black people, especially in america, demonstrates that society still hasn't integrated since that exploitation. The sins of the father still benefit the great great grandchildren.

I just think that any white person should have enough understanding and realisation of history to feel shame that their quality of life is built on the exploitation of others, and so avoiding words like that should be something you want to do.

(also; knowing a rich black person, or Obama, doesn't deflate this argument)

I watched 12 Years A Slave and I'm amazed that some black people even want to use the word today: It has such vile and abhorrent connotations. Mind you, 12 Years A Slave wasn't out 30 years ago when rap music started.

That being said, I still rap along with the hip hop music and don't think I'm a racist for doing so.

I can't believe that anyone with a straight face can deny that what is universally regarded as the most toxic and reviled racial epithet in the English language is a 'bad word'.

Also I have no problem using the word whilst talking about the subject, or quoting someone else who has used it. I think that's just down to common sense though, common sense and maturity.

I don't have a problem using the word Nigger when I'm talking about the word Nigger in the context in which the word Nigger is used. None of this 'the word that shall not be named' bollocks. Unless I'm saying something like 'Shut the fuck up, you dumb nigger', there's no problem referencing the word itself.

Again, that's half the point. Society, or perhaps the media, are so fearful of being branded racist they they haven't even the courage to say it in a clinical, referential way.

I'm no fan of Clarkson; as far as I'm concerned the guy's a buffoon, knows very little about cars/driving, and it's a total mystery to me how someone like him can make £14 million a year? Fair play; there's hope for us all. (Albeit, having said that, anyone who describes Gordon Brown as a "cunt" at least has some redeeming qualities, eh).

However, the latest avalanche of faux rage, this time at some entirely un-fucking unbroadcast clip of him reciting a nursery rhyme, with hundreds of fully paid up Guardian luvvies and wannabees all writing into the BBC in unison about how ***disgusted*** they all are, in green ink no doubt (er, despite not having seen anything about it) just makes me sad. Sad at the quite ludicrous country (and people) we've become; all IMO of course.

Gah. I just find it all rather pathetic, really.

Oh Cavey, it's Express and Mail readers who write in complaints, not Guardianistas. They're too busy saving the world from the comfort of their Waitrose.

I'm curious about what these outraged wannabees actually want to be; and why they think writing complaint letters to the BBC will help them achieve their goals, because that seems very unlikely. More than their mock anger I'm appalled and confused by their poor career planning here.

Also, does the Guardian only offer a membership fee for luvvies and wannabees or is the scheme open to other people? And what are the benefits? Aside, of course, from having your letter writing campaigns co-ordinated to the extent of having the individual letters written simultaneously. I mean it's impressive of course, but not massively useful to me.

I just think these days, people get off on being offended? Seems overrated to me, spending most if not all of one's time being pissed off at something and/or someone, the latest hate figure or whatever. It's an oft-overused phrase, but personally I just wish such people would get a life collecting stamps or whatever.

I've just spent the day at Oulton Park with friends, drinking cider and watching the British Superbikes (and various scantily clad biker babes). It's been great. :)

I don't think most people give a shit TBH Cavey, it's just a small number of people making a lot of noise about a total non-event.

In today's 24 hour news culture pretty much anything can become a 'big' story, especially when there's a well known celeb attached.

I think I liked the news better when it was a once a day event with the newspapers, and then proper news programmes in the evenings. Now any old shit can become 'news' because every site out there wants new content all the time.

I always thought Rockstar deserved everything they got about that for telling big old lies.

Plus, of course, it helped them sell loads of computer games.

He talks about football a lot. I don't really know what he's on about, but his friends seem to like it.

Apparently Clarkson got a standing ovation from the audience when he entered the set to film QI today, and yet the QI twitter feed couldn't quite bring itself to mention that he was there.

I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

Indeed, it was on purpose, but I'd hardly say it was anything more than a linguistic joke in any case.

But I suppose people have axes to grind.

If it was on purpose then writing it off as just a 'linguistic joke' is a bit mealy-mouthed. You wouldn't make, or forgive, a linguistic joke around the word nigger or spic or whatever; I don't understand why this is different?

Mainly as those are words people recognise as offensive.

(Although I'm slightly baffled at the way people find words offensive by default, with no thought as to the intention behind them. A word only has whatever power you choose to give it.)

I'm aware that slope's a derogatory term so I recognise is as offensive. Am I not supposed to or something? I'm not really sure what your argument is here. If it was an intentional joke then Clarkston must've known of the word's double meaning. So unless he thought 'slope' was an endearing or complimentary term (which is possible, but seems unlikely) then surely he was being a dick in using it?

Mr Dave wrote:

I don't think anyone does find a word offensive by default; they find it offensive if it's got an inherently offensive meaning (e.g. fuck, shit, cunt) or if it's been used offensively widely enough to earn that meaning (e.g. all racial slurs ever).

So, Is JayZ being racist here : http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/jayz/nig ... tor99.html

No. Because Context.
It is quite depressing the way that one of he British favourite pastimes is being offended by stuff. Leading to a ridiculous carousel of words as they fall out of favour for being 'offensive'.

If I were to use such words, it wouldn't automatically make me a racist, due to, you know, not having any particular prejudices against any race. If you were to think it did, that would make you an idiot.

Indeed, the context being that not only is Jay-Z a member of the group that's been the target of the derogatory term but it's also a term that the group in question has spent decades reclaiming. Is Clarkson an Asian rap star? Is there a massive culture of Asian rap stars all over the globe churning out songs in which they call each other 'slant'? And why are you making me type all this out, given that there's no way in hell you don't already know it?

A ridiculous carousel? Really? You don't think you might be massively over-dramatising that? How many words in your lifetime are you really bothered that you can't use any more? Bearing in mind, before you come back and inevitably try to use 'slant' as an example, that as you say context is important and words like 'slant' are perfectly acceptable in the right context so you can't claim those to have been placed on this carousel you're so annoyed at.

If I were to use such words, it wouldn't automatically make me a racist, due to, you know, not having any particular prejudices against any race. If you were to think it did, that would make you an idiot.

You should probably find someone who thinks that then and tell them so; it's not very useful information for me. While you're doing that I'll carry on thinking that anyone using racists terms, even if they're not actually racist, is a bit of a tit who really needs to more carefully consider their word choice.

Kanye disagrees

Quote:
Earlier in the interview, Goldberg, who is white, started quoting a line from West’s song, Flashing Lights: “I got flashed by the paparazzi/ Damn, these niggas got me.” West interrupted there, telling Goldberg “to ask for a … pass” before using the N-word. “You can’t just say [that] word around me,” West said. “It offends me because you’re a white person saying ‘nigga’.”
