I am part of the group responsible for our work away day.

22 people, budget of about 3 grand.

Must involve somewhere to do business stuff in the morning, then food options for lunch, then an entertaining activity that involves team building in the afternoon.

Obviously I'm already sounding out places to do wine tasting, but what are other ideas that aren't too far from London?

Organise a car wash where they wash cars for the public for a day.

This has the added benefit of actually raising money and you can donate the profit to the homeless or someother worthy cause. You can have chips at lunch.

Plus, it won't be some meaningless works team building exercise where a bunch of middle class gits build a raft using barrells and rope and pretend that they're roughing it.

No strenuous physical activity, thanks.

Half a day doing talks and work shit. Half a day having fun. Actual fun.

I think Satunalian's idea is an excellent one.

If it doesn't appeal, I went to a good team-building event at the Underground Cookery School, by Jamie Oliver's 15 Restaurant (don't think it's connected.

Everyone cooks their dinner with professional chefs, who are fairly droll and tolerant of cack-handedness (though aren't afraid to tell you you've ballsed it up and to start again) and you eat your dinner with as much booze as you can handle.

I've been helping organise our team building event. We are off to a hotel for breakfast and the boring bit, then cocktails and lunch buffet and then we have some cocktail baristas from Diageo coming to the hotel to teach us the fine art of cocktail making with some fancy moves so we can all drop drinks everywhere, then out for drinks.

My favourite team building day was a poker clinic (whoever calls these things clinics should be shot, but that's not the point)
I've never had so much fun on a teambuilding thing and we all chipped in for some casino type stuff afterwards and would play poker in the pub after work regularly for ages after that.

Team building deffo needs a good drinking game - I'd suggest Freckles, Curio, apparently as beloved of our dear (non commissioned) armed services personnel.

Your staff will love it, guaranteed. Just hold fifty quid back for soilage costs.

Obviously.

My task is to find the best way to spend the money anyway. Preferably on things I like, such as wine.

I wonder if there is any research as to whether they actually help teams work better? My guess : No.

Give each person their share of the budget and then all go home early.

BOAT is fine. Its after BOAT that the evening rapidly becomes intolerable. BOAT.

Don't do some of the shite we've had to endure like "learning circus skills" or "buying ingredients for luxury sweets and then doing a sales pitch".

No matter what you pick though, someone will be unhappy. Miserable gits.
