The up and down arrow keys, or the scroll wheel.

EDIT - And PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN for bigger jumps. And HOME and END sometimes, I think.

Whatever the case, I thought it was a nicely designed webpage, although I would have to explain it to my in-laws if I were to send them a link, which sort of spoils it a bit.

On Friday the House of Lords debated Baroness Kennedy's bill to restrict entry to the country to those who are ' known to be, or to have been, involved in conduct constituting the commission of a gross human rights abuse or violation'. This is basically referring to those Russians already facing sanctions here, in the US, and elsewhere - a Magnitsky Act.

It's a very good debate and worth reading if you want something positive in politics. It'll be interesting how far it progresses: the minister's response was a bit lukewarm.

This is an excellent, if thoroughly depressing, review of all the ways Millennials are thoroughly and dangerously screwed by the modern housing, jobs, and healthcare systems. It's written about America but Britain is not so different, I fear.

Trump said the US can get again into the Paris accord after the (very short) meeting with Norway's PM. I don't know what she said to him, but we should be grateful.

Anyway, the chance that Trump changes his mind again is almost 1.

The rise in homelessness over the past few years is, I think, one of the biggest political failures and social tragedies of the past few years. Not trying to start a cuts/austerity/bankers fight (we've done that too much and I'd rather post pictures of bears) but more a case that we've let the infrastructure and support networks dwindle as each operator (government; councils; health; police etc) reduce or remove their bit and not dealing with the knock-on effects on other services. I'm generally against over centralisation but this is one issue where a more joined-up or central approach is necessary.

The correspondence I have had with him has been good. He's kept me updated with goings on and copies of letters and emails he has had.

If it came to an election though, I doubt I'd vote for him as our differences on larger issues cannot be squared. However, I wouldn't vote for Labour as it'd be taken as endorsi g their Brexit stance and Corbyn, and read of their parliamentary candidate:

Quote:
Momentum is understood to consider two more candidates to be broadly aligned with its values, even though it did not explicitly endorse them. They are Jo Pike, a lecturer who will take on the Tories’ Philip Davies...

Which is a deal breaker. The only argument I have seen on twitter (mainly of my instigation) is "If you don't vote Labour the Tories will get in you monster" and that isn't good enough.

On homelessness around where I am, there are about 4 I recognise and 2 beg aggressively, walking about and coming up to people.

I read this article yesterday with various stories from homeless people and it's just heartbreaking stuff. A friend of mine is part of a Facebook group that over Christmas gave out hundreds of big rucksacks, stuffed with stuff to help the homeless keep warm and look after themselves. They've done loads of good things, but you can't help thinking this is a solvable problem. Although one nearby town's attempts to solve it was a plan to fine rough sleepers £1k if they were found to be sleeping in a tent. Unsurprisingly, that didn't go down well and it was scrapped.

Blame FPTP. If we had PR people could vote for who they wanted without worrying about tactical voting.

As it stands, I can see why people would vote for the candidate and party that would keep X out. It's making the best of a broken system.

Yeah, but even with PR then you could still say that you had to vote for the "least worst" option if you decided to frame it in negative terms. If someone is "only voting X to keep Y out" then that surely means that there is something about X's policies that they prefer.

Sure, you do prefer X to Y, but you prefer Z to both, only the very idea of voting for Z is couched as a vote for Y.

Indeed. Stupid FPTP.

That said, if you’re not actively switching your vote away from X or Y, you shouldn’t be able to be accused of actively helping either to win, since you’re not taking anything away from either.

Train news now. Virgin East Coast (which is only 10% Branson and 90% Stagecoach) has lost its franchise after overbidding and running up losses of over £200 million. Reading the statement it suggests the government are open to returning to having a public operator on the line but I wouldn't be surprised if their 'assessment' rules this out.

Mr Speaker was in a catty mood:

Quote:
Order. Just before the Secretary of State responds to the shadow Secretary of State, I must say to the hon. Member for Kingston upon Hull East (Karl Turner), who, in his usual fashion, yelled, “It’s a disgrace,” from a sedentary position, that this morning I conducted my weekly Skype session with school students from the Education Centre. They were students of the Herne Bay primary school, one of whom asked me, “Mr Speaker, is there a Member who is particularly cheeky in terms of loud and repeated heckling?” I said, “Well, seeing as you ask, there is a chap called Karl Turner, who is a very agreeable fellow, but he does tend to go from nought to 60 in about five seconds.” I proceeded to educate the pupils of that primary school class in the favoured expressions of the hon. Gentleman—“Shocking” and “It’s a disgrace”—and his ritual exhortation, which fortunately I have not heard today to a Minister, to wit “be’ave”, which he makes while conspicuously failing to do so himself.
