Everyone says "unelected" like it's a bad thing. With the UK's current track record we'd elect Katie Hopkins.

She's gone proper off the deep end, and is (so I hear) currently on a boat with neo-nazis and holocaust deniers, trying to stop the rescue boats from saving the lives of drowning refugees.

She's that desperate to get away from Charles?

Sadly I don't think he's young enough to see the fightback completed, much like anyone else who is alive today.

Just finished Brendan Cox's memoir on his late wife, 'More in Common'.

Reading about Jo Cox's life and beliefs I'm reminded that politics and politicians do matter and can be a force for good. Just painful how we've had to learn this, and there are no words to adequately describe what Mr Cox and his family have suffered and what they and the country have lost.

I'm actually quite tearful right now, again. Recommended as necessary reading.

Liam Fox demands meeting with BBC over 'negative' Brexit stories

Oh, go and write to 'Feedback' like everyone else. What we really don't want is Donald Trump-style bleatings of 'fake news' every time some says something you don't like. Besides, if Brexit's a good thing, you should be able to argue for it yourself.

Very much that last sentence. Also what about all the anti-EU stories that have been made up coming from the likes of him, BoJo, Gove, The Express, The Mail etc etc?

We've had decades of utterly made up shit from an entire arm of our media but the BBC come out with some analysis and facts that report the truth about Brexit and idiots like Fox have yet another pop at the BBC.

It must be a nightmare writing news for the BBC. They accused of bias by practically everyone precisely because of their balance.

Yeah, the Leave guy on R4 tbis morning was banging the Project Fear drum after the IMF lady said that negotiating 60 treaties in a short time ain't gonna happen and 80% of UK economy is in service industries which is not covered by WTO rules. And on WTO rules: WTO tariff is 32% on wine, 10% on cars and 40% on lamb., i think.

Tariff's won't matter. Produce slowly rotting in lorries queueing on the M20 because there's no reciprocal food standards inspection agreement in place will be the nightmare scenario.

Since the Booze and Dople rehab day centre opened a mile and a bit down the road, there's been a marked increase in the number of beggars in The Village. Most just sort of sit by the cash point at CoOp, and do chalk drawings on the pavement. However, used nredkes are now beimg found dumped in accessible places and there's more aggressive panhandling going on. As I'm not a monster, I've often given change but it is reaching silly levels now. I might start asking Philip Davies what can be done, and the counciller, and try to move the rehab place back to Bradford. It's a tricky one.

Yeah, but isn't it better it's somewhere else, preferably among the poor people, so they feel more at home.

Rather than run a day centre, surely it'd be better to move these people away somewhere to undergo a course of treatment and return them once cleared?

Better, yes, but not cheaper, and hence the problem persists.

There's loads of disused mills in Bradford. They could use them. They have secure gates and walls. Go in, stay a few weeks, come out clean.

Health Camps. Sometimes, a government has to use a weighty hand for the good of the population.

Also vagrancy is illegal so they'd be getting off lightly.

I wonder if they're going to put a cut-off date on existing internal combustion engine cars being taken off the road, or if they'll allow natural wastage to take care of it?

They could become quite coveted and valuable in a world of boring electric cars, especially Audi S4s in Ibis White, I reckon.

I reckon that by 2040 this will seem like some idiotically pointless legislation, in much the same way that it isn't really necessary to ban the sale of new steam traction engines for fear of everyone deciding that it would be better to take their kids to school in some pathetically slow ten tonne curiosity that was invented in the 19th century and powered by coal.

I doubt it will actually happen.

Why even ban them? Just put obscenely high tax on them that only millionaires can afford, assuming that electric cars are an adequate replacement for most people by then.

It's a pointless promise anyway. How can a 2017 government commit to something 23 years into the future? If Labour win the next election (stop it, it could happen) what's to stop them saying that the ban won't happen? Or that it will happen in 2028?

Bullshit nonsense.

I agree with MarkG

Imagine I'm a factory owner, churning out cars off the production line and selling them for a reasonable profit. Annual upgrades and new versions don't cost me that much to change processes and tools etc. Until demand of electric outstrips that of petrol, I've no real incentive to invest in changing over to electric. Setting a date 23 years' hence provides a little bit of an incentive to get moving on this.

As for long distance planning: people were warned in 1995 about changes to pension ages coming in now, but everyone forgot about it and are now really angry about the lack of warning.

2040 is a meaningless date as Norway have gone for 2025 and France from 2030. So if those dates are met, then this means that the fossil fuel car market was effectively gone ten years earlier than the uk date.

This is an absolute longstop at best without scaring the horses in the industry.
