My real problem is I could see the exact same thing happening here - you read about this and think 'why would anyone vote for it' and realize they are doing it because they will make themselves more money

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/pl ... ba787222bd

So basically take lots of money that the government is using for healthcare and instead give the top earners in the country a tax break.

Is this really where we are now? It feels like everything that's happened since 9/11 has been a slow, inexorable slide to the right. Politics of fear is actually fucking winning.

Also, you rarely see a Tory celebration picture with lots of young happy people in it, do? Just a lot of middle aged and elderly, clutching their fucking handbags away from the FORRINS and the TERRORIZTS!

Fuck this, I'm moving to the moon.

UKIP is disappearing because all the people that agreed with their policies and the way there were going about things see that the conservative party is doing exactly what they want to do so are voting for them.

To me that's not a silver lining :-(

(I took something you were happy about and made it bad and I'm sorry for that)

Early indications suggest the turnout for the Merseyside Metro Mayoral election may be as low as 25%

It prompted me to write a short essay on twitter, describing my feelings about said Republicans (tl;dr - it's not very complimentary).

The Republican shit in the States is beyond vile. It will, by their own admissions, kill more Americans than Al Qaeda and ISIS have ever done, and they're celebrating it. Just horrible.

Not to mention that it appears to make being assaulted or raped a pre-existing condition. Which seems terribly odd and horrible. So women who don't want to lose their health insurance shouldn't report their rape. I wonder which party full of fucking rapists put that through Congress.

Silver lining is that the Senate is crazy, but less crazy than the House. Hopefully it never gets passed.

Indeed, bit of a rapists' charter, given they'll know their victims will likely not report it.

Turnout here in the Shire is 33%. I wish more people would take an interest in local politics: yes, they lack the budget or powers they ought to have but the decisions they do make still matter. I'll get off my high horse now. :)

It also makes it a precondition to have had a C-section or be a victim of domestic violence

https://qz.com/975894/under-the-republi ... onditions/

Quote:
C-sections, since they can lead to future health complications, for instance leading to the development of conditions such as placenta accreta in future pregnancies, or making future deliveries through C-sections far more likely, exposing the mother to higher risks of hemorrhage and post-surgery complications.

Sexual assault, as it can put people at a higher risk for mental-health issues and substance abuse. (In some instances in the past—like the case of Christina Turner, in Texas, before Obamacare was implemented—getting prescribed medication like HIV retroviral drugs after a rape has compromised women’s ability to secure coverage.)

Domestic violence, since it can lead to a higher need for mental and physical health care.

The hope is that they've given themselves lots of rope to hang themselves with by passing a bill that apparently stands little chance of passing the senate.

But that does rely on an informed public...

Results for the Shire are in. Tories remain one short of a majority, but a number of seats flipped. The two Green ones went to Labour, and we've got a new party represented: the Henley Residents' Group.

I voted for a Tory. As dirty as it makes me feel being generally anti-Tory at every level, the Tory candidate was the best for the job locally. He has lived here all his life and already achieved tons for the town in his position as mayor and alongside the town council which IMO for local council positions is more important than party politics.

Waste of money. Teesside Airport was always a shed in meadow, and wasting money on trying to resurrect it is folly.

It certainly makes the upcoming general more terrifying (for which I wouldn't vote Tory if my life depended on it)

I'd say I hope I don't get sick, but my psoriasis probably already marks me out as somebody to be thinned from the herd.

But! We still have the Senate to go, and they seem to be of the mind to start again by writing a new bill from scratch. Meanwhile, the further Left elements continue beating up on the Center (sp) of the Democrats and I'm trying not to point at the UK and scream 'THIS IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU DO THAT'. But we must have our purity, eh, lads?

I wouldn't vote for him  at that point wider issues come into play than local dog fouling and whether or not the main road potholes will be sorted.

In one of those bitter ironies, it didn't start until I came over here. Changing jobs lead to the discovery that not all employer-backed insurance schemes are equal - going to Target to be informed that the prescription I was getting for $15 would now be over $400 was…an interesting day!

According to the Oxford Mail the Green candidate in Oxford West & Abingdon is standing down to help the Liberal Democrats reclaim the seat from the Tories. Not much use to me as I don't live there anymore, but this could be the start of a trend.

The thing is, the Greens are always willing to help, and are one of the leading voices in the progressive alliance talks. It needs the Lib Dems and Labour to reciprocate to have any chance of doing it, and the leaders won't, because they want to be considered as "big parties" and the Tories will start saying "see, I told you, coalition of chaos". So that leaves it down to regional parties deciding to go it alone, and I think it's harder for an individual to stand aside, rather than someone from above telling you to stand aside.

I'm currently reading 'More Sex, Lies, and the Ballot Box', edited by Philip Cowley and Robert Ford.

Like its predecessor, it's a collection of short chapters (no more than 1000 words each) on various aspects of political behaviour, from the role of the weather to why young people don't vote.

I wish I'd read a volume like this years ago as it really reminds me how interesting political science, politics, and people can be when written in an accessible style.
