Last year she said that ditching Johnson would only please Putin. Utterly disgusting.

If you want to see someone make a complete arse of themselves, read or watch Lia Nici's speech. It's so awful that if I lived in Grimsby I would deny any association with that place.

Looks like Thames Water is going up the spout. Yet again the government will be bailing out failed privatisations at the taxpayers' expense. It's almost as if the second the money stops flowing they expect the government to flush them out.

So earlier today there were reports that the government were planning to house some asylum seekers who had tested postive for TB on their new 'f#ck off back to France boat' , and there were a lot of comments around how this was a really bad idea.
However no one needs to worry about that because part of their tests before putting people on came back today (after they had already put a number of people on) , to show that there were traces of Legionella on board , and they now have to evacute everyone

As shambles go I really think about all they can do to top this is put Trump in charge ?

It's both painfully inhumane, and embarrassingly incompetent.

All part of the plan to distract the public from this.

Quote:
You will have all seen the news reports and heard the discussions about housing asylum seekers on the Bibby Stockholm barge. You will have no doubt have also heard the appalling language government ministers have been using about people who are seeking sanctuary from persecution and torture. But this is all a smoke-screen for something else that has been happening this week that will affect every single one of our friends.

The government are determined that they will not open any new hotels to house this summer's expected influx of asylum seekers. So this week, with no notice, the government has implemented a 'hotel maximisation scheme'. It has quietly removed the legal requirements about room size and over-crowding that usually applies to Houses of Multiple Occupancy in the case of asylum seekers, and applied these revised rules to the temporary hotel accommodation. This means that all the rooms that are single occupancy in our women and families hotel will become twins.

Our friends who have been living in their own room for many months (nearly 2 years in some cases) will now have to share with someone they don't know, who may not be the same religion or even speak the same language. There is no communal room at the hotel as it has been converted to a twin bedroom so there is nowhere for the 15 children we suppoprt to play.
As you can imagine, this has caused a lot of distress at the hotel, especially as for some the first time they heard about it was when they were handed single sheets instead of double. We are expecting 18 new arrivals over the next few days.
In the case of the men's hotel, the contractors are looking into adding bunk beds to triple the capacity.

Our colleagues at other hotels have similar issues - one hotel is doubling from 250 to 500! And none of the support groups have been informed about this - we are expected to find the resources to add 18 women to our english class, fund a bigger bus to get them into town, find them all clothing, get them to their health appointments and generally advocate for them. We are already exhausted.

Why is this happening? Well, the govenrment have spectacularly failed to process enough of the backlog of asylum claims, meaning that people are still stuck in hotels. In fact, the numbers arriving is 17% lower than at this time last year, but it is taking AT LEAST 2 years to get through the asylum system. This country could easily absorb the 35,000 asylum seekers that arrived last year - we need people to boost the workforce - but it hasn't yet processed the 32,000 that arrived in 2021, or the 30,000 that came in 2020.

So when you hear people talking about the Bibby Stockholm Barge, or the Minister using the F word, please tell them what is really going on and how utterly appalling and inhumane it all is.

I did actually think we'd said that we have simply stopped processing *any* asylum claims at all so we just keep finding places to store people but they are all permanently 'non' people because they dont exist.

Do people celebrate the Trusserversary in September or October? Or does everyone have a 50-day bacchanal?

Some day, a pub quiz victory will rest on knowing she was Big Liz's last PM.

I've already had success at a quiz (Cottage last year I think) for being able to remember the exact date upon which Big Liz finally popped it.

Rapidly approaching the first anniversary of her shuffle, and the fortieth anniversary of my ejection into the world.

There's plenty of hospitals, court buildings and other public sector stuff too.
I expect the scale will grow and grow over the next few weeks and be a much larger problem to deal with than unsafe cladding.

There's a lot been going on the last few years but you know what phrase hadn't popped into my head randomly until just now?

Stop the planet I want to get off.

Of all the things, it was a response to fucking Sunak delaying the petrol/diesel car sales ban to 2035. Because consumers shouldn't be out of pocket.

So where's the 50p cut in fuel duty then? Or having electricity be billed by what the real generation mix costs instead of all by the most expensive part?

Just the completely brazen nature of it.

"Can more pressure be put on the police and possibly the Government to tackle this issue."

Probably not.

Boris Johnson's ex-wife Marina Wheeler is Labour's sex harassment adviser

Seems appropriate. I'm sure she'll have a lot of personal experience of this.

If you look at the turnout figures, both of them were down about 20,000, and if you look at the conservative vote, both of them were down about 20,000.

Mid Beds:

2019:
64,717 - Turnout
38,692 - Conservative
14,028 - Labour
08,171 - Liberal Democrats

Yesterday:
40,720 - Turnout
13,872 - Labour
12,680 - Conservative
09,420 - Liberal Democrats

Tamworth

2019:
46,056 - Turnout
30,542 - Conservative
10,908 - Labour

Yesterday:
25,586 - Turnout
11,719 - Labour
10,403 - Conservative

The Labour figure barely changes

I know it's not going to be exactly 1-1, but it does bother me that in a general election those Conservatives might just make the effort to come out and vote. They can show dissatisfaction with Rishi now, but they'd still probably prefer him over any version of Labour.

I don't think Labour will win with as much of a landslide as these by-elections might have people think but I think that they will at least win. The Tories have lost so many people with their far right populism.

First off I'm usually a fearful pessimist, having fearfully called Trump, Brexit and Tory landslides. These results however point to something different to me. First of all this is a bluer-than-blue constituency with Mid Bedforshire, and Tamworth is also pretty blue. I wasn't expecting the Tory leads to be heavily slashed but not for BOTH of these to flip. You can see some of the conservative votes going for lib-dem in Mid-Bedfordshire, I guess it's naturally easier for them to vote centre-right than centre-left.

Secondly I can perfectly see Tory votes also wanting to burn their own party down and rebuild it from within. I'd hope that somehow the centre-right regains influence within the Tory party, with the quiet semi-sane vaguely competent types who left during the Boris era coming back, but for any party in power for so long there comes the itching for a big civil war and that feeling of burning it all down and then fighting over ideology would be enough I think to disenchant some and actively turn a whole bunch of Tories who view Sunak with active malice going for (ugh) Reform or also staying at home. These results are going to fuel that feeling of, "We can't go on like this, let's end it now," while at the same time thoughts also are of, "Well Labour aren't completely communist, let's let them inherit this scorched land and then we can plan for the next one."

I don't think we'll see a historic 1997 Blair landslide, but I think that Kier's promise of boring competence combined with glitter of success is enough to make for a fairly comfortable Labour win. (Proceeds to knock on every bit of wood in the house, scratch the backstay, whistle, turn three times and cry out 'May the Lord and Saints preserve us!"

Consider the effect that these headlines have on wavering, floating voters. Most won't be drilling down into stats, they'll simply hear that the "Tory Heartlands have fallen" and flip their fickle switch to Red (or yellow, if they're a deviant)

I had to go looking. Tories losing seats, hooray!

Torygraph suggesting a bump to the 40% income tax rate will keep sunak/tories in. Fucking *Truss* expected to detail an alternative budget - how the fuck is her name in the press again?!

Meanwhile all the fishing pools and waterways within seconds walk of us are currently bloated and brown with unusual rain and badly managed agricultural runoff, even without the 90+ new houses being applied for (and thankfully denied)every year. But at least they're not green-blue with nutrient-pollution-driven algae this week. Houses minutes' strolling away very close to flooding with runoff from working fields that have likely just lost half their recently planted crop.

Fuck all of this.

So with the deluge of trump's co-defendants starting to take deals, who wants to place bets on the patsy? Because realistically who thinks trump is going to end up convicted of anything.

Labour's entire party political broadcast should be of Starmer playing in his footy team. It would be brilliant.

I admire your optimism!

I think the Tories are following the US and Australian examples and entering a cycle of ever-increasing extremism, fuelled by the dwindling and fanatical membership ("From the people who brought you Johnson and Truss, it's Suella Time..."). I can't see the course correcting itself until the march of time causes large sections to disappear from the party rolls.

Excitingly, I'm in a new constituency next time round with the possibility of a three-way fight! Maybe this means I'll actually get a canvasser.

We're being moved to a different constituency for the next GE also. Wirral South is no more and we're moving to the Ellesmere Port and Bromborough constituency. Which is interesting as Ellesmere Port is technically Cheshire. Do constituency boundaries often cross lines like that?

We're being moved to a different constituency for the next GE also. Wirral South is no more and we're moving to the Ellesmere Port and Bromborough constituency. Which is interesting as Ellesmere Port is technically Cheshire. Do constituency boundaries often cross lines like that?

Local authority boundaries are one of the things they have to take into consideration and they try to stick to them where possible but sometimes other factors will take priority.

See their Guide to the 2023 Review if you're interested in how they drew them.

Conservative MP Crispin Blunt has been arrested. Pretty serious stuff. Jeez, at the current rate of by-elections we might not need to wait until January 2025.

Maybe he could co-host it with Peppa Pig to give the show more gravitas.
