Rank B first try. Could be stealthier.

This game is rock solid, isn't it? I've tried the side-op where you have to kill the two US Marines without being detected, but I just can't seem to do it.

Then I tried the one where you gun everyone down from the chopper. Near the end but it was hard as nails too. Nice variety though.

Killing the two marines was one of my better efforts. I managed to waste them both and get a "B". I got detected but managed to do it with no collateral damage. I can't quite recall how I killed the first one but the second one I chased down his jeep and rammed it after I'd snuck around the back and stolen an APC. Then just drove on out of the base.

I'm going to try the other target first this time, I think. I reckon I'm going after the jeep guy first.

This has really clicked with me now - loving it! There is so much to do - well worth £20.

Completed all Side and Extra Ops now, and collected all XOF badges Still only 24% complete!

Completed the main story and all side ops on normal and just collected the XOF patches. 25% complete.

Just the Extra Op to do now.

Very good this but it needed more interior areas. I think the base is actually quite small without them. Well done on the variety of the missions though.

I downloaded the free MGS game on Xbox One the other day and started playing it last night. It's great and has reminded me how much I loved the original but sadly I never played any more. Anyway, I did a wee search on amazon on the off chance I could get them now and look!

So, has anyone played this? If so, does it have the first one in it? Some of the reviews seem to suggest it does but it isn't mentioned in the product description. Also, is there any perceptible difference between the 360 and PS3 versions?

Looking directly at the box art with my eyes suggests that it doesn't.

I swear there was a HD Collection with 1-3 but without Peace Walker in it.

I haven't played it but not according to the review:

Quote:
This HD collection brings together definitive editions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, 3: Snake Eater and the previously PSP-exclusive Peace Walker.

The first MGS was Playstation exclusive, wasn't it?

That's what I took from it but there's a few reviews like this:

Quote:
Brilliant game, comes with Metal Gear 1&2 which isn't mentioned in the description, the graphics are sooo so nice, very crisp, controls are perfect just like the originals but on the bigger more comfortable Xbox controller, loading times are good and audio is also very good. For the games, mgs2 camera angles are something to get used to but once you do it's brilliant, MGS 3 snake eater is actually the subsistence version and has the improved fully controllable 3D camera angle stuff, Peace walker is brilliant works great on the Xbox, game comes with 2 disks, 1 for MGS 2&3 and 1 for peace walker. The manual is also really good with loaaaddddssss of content (all 3 full manuals for all 3 games with possibly a bit of extra content) I believe there's also some extra content on the disks that you can look at too. altogether no experienced glitches, brilliant purchase and great value for money

Quote:
it is actually slightly misleading as it does not have 3 games. it has 5. it also inculds metal gear 1 and 2. people who don't know about this go onto the metal gear 3 part of the disk and they are at the menu screen.

Was hoiping someone here owned it or had played it and could let me know. I'm moving in with the inlaws next weekend for a few weeks so I need games to play :p

I have the Vita version and there's no MGS, just MGS 2 and 3. And the title screen seems to suggest you should play 3 before 2, because the story is earlier in the chronology. Which I guess makes sense, but as I started playing 3 I had this nagging doubt in my mind that I was about to embark on a 30-hour waste of time because I hadn't played 2 already.

Confused, I decided to give up and play neither.

I own it on t'xbox. It does indeed not have MGS1 in it, but you can get the PS1 version on PS3 separately.

Ok cool. So is MGS1 the only thing missing in this collection then if I wanted to get up to date?

Interestingly the Wikipedia page claims that there are two extra games on there as well (albeit not in HD):

Quote:
The MSX2 versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are also included on all three versions.

Quote:
The American and European console versions of the collection include HD versions of Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in one package, as well with the MSX2 versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

Nothing Post PS2/PSP era (So MGS4 and Rising).
No MGS1.
I believe the Metal Gear Not-Solids are the original MSX versions, not the different NES versions. Supposedly better, but I can't really comment having never played any of the 8 bit games.

If it helps I just read the history section in the menu before playing Ground Zeroes. The story is so ridiculous I don't think it it will lessen your enjoyment of it not playing the earlier games.

Also Volume is getting good reviews. Play that instead. ;)

The story is bobbins - ignore it.

If you want to play Metal Gear Solid then you can play the original PSX on PS3 or Vita - and then the collection for almost all of the others (apart from the GC special)

The early games are 'okay' but I dont know how much you will enjoy them now - again back to this idea that they were 'of their time' when now you may not be as tolerant of some of the junk they put in to try and pad stuff out

The NES / MSX versions are on one of the disk based collections but are obviously emulatable as well if you want to try that and that may be where some of the confusion is (since they are Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Snakes Revenge but thats different to Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2)

Ah, Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid are two different things; every day's a school day. Though, sadly, not for Hideo Kojima who would massively benefit from a lesson in how to name things in a way that wasn't batshit crazy.

What was that bonkers Japanese Mech combat series that had the stupidest naming ever? Zardoz was a fan if I remember.

Don't forget Frogger: Helmet Chaos, or Twin Eagle: Revenge Joe's Brother (bonus points for that as "Revenge Joe" is a helicopter, and it's the first game in the series).

I don't think the original MGS holds up very well tbh, it's worth watching it on youtube, or playing it swapping the controller with someone who played it originally, but you shouldn't skip it entirely.

I thought Peace Walker was shit, just do 2/3/4/Revengeance before 5.

Baffling Konami didn't get all the games (at least 2/3 HD and 4) on the modern consoles + PC before MGS5 is out.

Pretty sure the original MGS got a PC port. I seem to remember it was called Metal Gear Solid Integral, like the Japanese import version of what we ended up getting here as Metal Gear Solid VR Missions.

Yeah there was that. It was a shit port though, as was often the case from Japanese studios back in that era.

Well, GMA is impossible to Google for today. What's the controversy?

Also, he appears to have gone insane.

He's always had a rather unusual turn of phrase - and the controversy was when journalists were being entered into a competition to win a PS3 by tweeting out 'adverts' , he merely said that they needed to avoid even the impression of being in the games publishers pockets and it all got blown up

When we're between between Metal Gear Solid games everyone's opinion seems to be that Hideo Kojima makes decent games; but they're incredibly flawed and all attempts at plot and characterisation are like laughable teenage fan-fiction. Then, suddenly, whenever one of them is actually released, everyone's opinion magically changes for a while and he's a genius auteur who's saving the industry from itself while plotting the course of gaming for the next few years. Does it seem like that to anyone else?

You see a lot more of the variance on Twitter , where he'll switch from standard stuff to near gibberish at times - so to answer your question no he's not gone mad , he's just a little eccentric at times :-)

Oh god :this:

I was reading two people on Twitter whose opinions aren't too far from my own and was stunned by the rubbish they were spouting about these games. Did we all go mad or did we forget that not only is MGS4 absolutely unplayable? Those install times, man. The garbage cut scenes? The length of the cut scenes? A single cut scene can last an hour. AN HOUR. MGS as a series is desperately meh; MGS4 is the worst shit I've ever played. You literally cannot play the game for more than 5 minutes without an interruption which lasts longer than you've been playing. The only good level on MGS4 was the third one (I think, the jungle one) but that's only because it aped MGS3.

MGS3 is the only good MGS (After he released the special edition and sorted out that fackin camera) and the sole reason is because it is about the only game where you can sneak about for long periods without interruption. Y'know, actually play the fackin game for a change.

Notwithstanding my disdain for the MGS series I appreciate the little effects and easter eggs thrown in and, if you ask me, this is perhaps the only reason why people speak highly of these games. They are quite detailed worlds when you are allowed to exist within them.

I've never been a fan so I couldn't give a toss for the story, just tell me who to kill. Ground Zeroes seemed to do just that and then I had a riot doing it, don't remember any massive cut scenes anyway. Phantom Pain looks like it'll be the same as that but better.

I can't help suspecting you'll be very mistaken if you're expecting no massive cut scenes. The actual gameplay of Ground Zeroes will be very similar to Phantom Pain no doubt but as the former is just a stopgap of sorts where as the latter is his most recent, and now final, full-on Metal Gear game I can't imagine it'll be free of rambling nonsensical story.

Didn't MGS 3 have horrific hour-long cutscenes also? I remember two massive cutscenes either side of a fight with an apparent rollerskating ninja, think that was 3.

Yeah probably, but as long as I can skip them or failing that fuck off out of the room for a bit then I'll probably cope.

There was a roller-skating fat guy in MGS2?
