We've actually done research on exactly that.

Hold on, and I'll dig up the numbers.

Ooh! How 'anonymous' is that survey that my employer just asked me to fill in?

Did you put your name on it? Did you email it back?

Playing with a straight bat, it was Web based.

And did the URL have any unique string to track you?

Applying for jobs is absolutely shit. The descriptions I'm looking at are so vague and up themselves it's untrue.

Also, want to know the salary? Tough. It's secret. How on earth is this a thing? Who applies for a job without knowing how much they're going to get paid?

It's shit.

If you do a job that has a standard title, you should be able to negotiate and define a salary around the national average for that role. Information that is readily available on line.

(I realise this is a lot easier said than done!)

Also, good luck, we're all counting on you.

Thanks for the advice and tips. I think it's getting me down, especially since I'm still at work knowing that I finish next month.

Doing nothing for a month sounds great doesn't it? Well, it isn't.

As for the pies, my door is always open but there just doesn't seem to be many openings for Victorian pie sellers.

I'm stuck here with no idea if I'll have a job or not soon. The owner of both businesses says I've got nothing to worry about, but when I've been asked to provide a list of all the admin passwords to be locked away safe and secure "Just in case me and the other person in my team are no longer around", it's not too hard to draw some conclusions....

Management are the first to go in buyouts as they like to bring their own team in. Usually the people on the ground are fine, to start with anyway. :S

Good luck.

Christ, the answer to that was surely "no", right? If someone asked me to do that I'd glare at them until they cried, even if it took 72 hours.

73 hours is too much, I'd give up by then.

I didn't have much choice, so they have a CD with an encrypted document containing the passwords.
They also have a password for the encryption, which has been handed to their HR director.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I have a sneaking suspicion there may be a typo on the password though.

As information security officer, I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.

Sadly in old age, my memory isn't what it once was so there may be a couple of gaps in the list that they were provided with, and if some of the others do get changed in the mean time, well, shit happens.....

More seriously I am too professional to deliberately go on a wrecking spree, but neither am I going to volunteer all the relevant information if I'm being given the boot. I know that there are several gotchas that a less experienced and qualified IT manager trying to figure things out will definitely miss, and then several things will break quite spectacularly.

I've got 12 years service so the redundancy cheque will keep me going for a while and I'd like to think that I'm fairly employable.

I've just helped the blind guy down the road set up his new router. He'd basically done it all, he just needed me to tell him the passcode which he entered into his iphone. Amazing! He was tapping, swiping and twisting on a blank screen with a headphone in so he could hear it talking back to him.

And here's me moaning that I can't see my phone when it's really sunny....

Back when I worked in Tandy we had a regular customer who was totally blind - he had no eyeballs.
A couple of times he would buy parts for his pc and get me to talk him through installing them, so I would open up a demo machine to let him feel the various slots and so on. Next day without fail he'd pop back to tell me how he'd got on and it was always a success.

Awesome chap.

I've been invited back to the Motherland to sing the Cornish songs* with a choir I was once in as part of St Piran's day shout. Which has really made me pleased. Happenstance determines I am already down there, too, so Shitpants can see The Parade. And there's free beer, too.

TIFU by:

i) not checking the times of the non-refundable railway ticket I was buying, so I can't use it and make the onward connection.

ii) pouring a quarter of a pint of Leffe over my living room carpet, the wall, the sofa, and the multi-plug adaptor that my PC runs off. Thankfully everything still works but the room will smell nice for a few days.

Just noticed that the image that's front-and-centre on the Swype website shows someone using the Swype keyboard to make a spelling mistake.

Amusingly, the attempt to get £75 quid off a second hand donkey seems to rest on the seller getting a deal on a chameleon. But I might just pay the full amount as others I'll end up driving to Manchester to get one which isn't worth the savings.

EDIT: This year be spendy!

And now we're eating rice and tinned tomatoes for the forseeable ....
