I do have the volume further up the slider with my N6P vs N6 which suggests it's full volume is fewer, but I'm still nowhere near the top end and would be deafened if I did go up that high.

Does voltage tell the whole story here? I know jack shit about headphones but you can have very big motors and very small ones that both be running on 12V but the big ones will draw more current and be a lot more powerful.

No. Although I don't think that would make much difference, because you're still sending the same voltage so you'd move bigger drivers a smaller amount. Maybe.

Aha. Edit -- have you considered that your advice may not be relevant to people planning on avoiding tinnitus?

No. Although I don't think that would make much difference, because you're still sending the same voltage so you'd move bigger drivers a smaller amount. Maybe.
Jesus, no. Not even remotely correct. There are two factors:

1) headphone impedance, in ohms. V=IR and P=IV, so P=V^2/R, so the higher the headphone's resistance, the lower the amperage and the lower the resultant power/volume.
2) headphone efficiency, the multiplier on how much of the electrical power becomes sound volume directed down your ears. There's a number of factors here, but consider one straightforward example: open-backed over-ear headphones leak more sound into your environment than closed-back ones so need more electrical power for the same amount of sound volume.

Here's some working out from someone who knows more than me.

Quote:
If you want to drive circum/circa aural headphones directly from the 6P the opamp in your mobile device is still unlikely to stop you from finding the joy of tinnitus.

With efficient headphones (high sensitivity (dbl/mW or dbl/W) and low impedance (ohms)) most high end mobile devices will deliver adequate volume. For example: JH Audio Roxanne IEM (115dbl sound pressure level (SPL) @ 1mW, impedance = 15ohm). Current = voltage/impedance = .34V/15ohm = .023amp. Power = current*voltage = .023amp*.34V = 7.82mW. You're ready to deliver nuclear winter to your cochlea...leave no hair standing.

With circumaural headphones you might have high impedance (300ohm-600ohm) and low efficiency 100dbl @ 1W. For such headphones you would need high an external amplifier. Still most large headphones can be adequately driven by a mobile device. For instance: Sennheiser HD700 large open back circumaural (105dbl SPL @ 1mW, impedance = 150ohm). Current = voltage/impedance = .34V/150ohm = .0023amp. Power = current*voltage = .0023amp*.34V = .782mW. If you like your music loud your SPL might be around 100dbl or more so a .34V source isn't going to cut it. An HTC One M9 or iPhone will have no problem though.

Vindicated!
That graf starts "With circumaural headphones you might have high impedance (300ohm-600ohm) and low efficiency 100dbl @ 1W..." That's not earbuds, that's large 'cans.

Author:  Grim... [ Thu Apr 21, 2016 15:28 ]
Post subject:  Re: Google Android

But that would suggest that earbuds are fantastically more loud than cans.

And having just plugged some cans in, there's no real difference.

Author:  Doctor Glyndwr [ Thu Apr 21, 2016 15:29 ]
Post subject:  Re: Google Android

300 ohm 'cans are rare. For comparison, my V-moda LP2s (which are pretty chunky headphones) have 32 Ohm resistance, which is 1/10th-1/20th the figures used in that worked example. Some earbuds are 6 or 8 Ohm, but I think most are around 16.

Samsung's implementation of a 'swype-style' input is total gash compared to what I had on the N5. (I didn't install anything on the N5 for input, it was just what came with the phone.)

I can't quite pin it down to exactly what the issue is, but accuracy is bollocks, and it does spaces where I don't want it to, and doesn't where I do, and autocorrects things in a way I don't want it to - everything about it seems slightly wrong. Hopefully it'll have some sort of learning behaviour as time goes on.

I could bang out messages to our WhatsApp MHS* gamer group super-fast on the N5, it's an exercise in frustration on the S7.

I did not know that was a thing, I shall have a look now.

......

Installed, (it even links off 1-2-3 to the various settings you need to change to replace the Samsung keyboard), banged out a couple of test messages, ZOMG that's so much better.

Cheers for the tip Bamba.

It's almost like what I really wanted is another Nexus, (since I've already replaced Samsung's UI on the S7), and yet I could not get one for THAT REASON.

Author:  Hearthly [ Sun Apr 24, 2016 12:59 ]
Post subject:  Re: Google Android

I have ordered another wireless charger as the one I have at home is too annoying to use with the S7.

Ironically it's the more expensive of the two wireless chargers I own, and is the official Google 'nexus' branded one. (The one at work is a cheapy basic flat 'disc' affair, which is fine.)

The problem with the Google one is it's on an angle, it has rubberised circles on it which were clearly designed to interface nicely with the rubberised back on the Nexus phones, so that my Nexus 5 basically 'stuck' to it when I placed it on there. Of course the S7 does no such thing because it's got a glass back, so it sort of slides down it until the base of the phone is resting on my desk.

This 'works' insofar as the phone still charges OK, but it's starting to get on my tits because it's inelegant, and unlike the N5 which I could simply lob in the general direction of the charger and it'd stick to it, I have to place the S7 more carefully.

So I've ordered one of these from Amazon. (Google one shown below.)

EDIT - Yeah I know, reduced from £49.99 to £19.99 my arse. But I'm happy with the price regardless.

I've been looking at touch screen phones again recently. I know I need to move away from Blackberry but it's going to be tough.

Having said that a couple of years back I bought a phone called a Swees 5.0. 5" Android phone that cost me about £50. It was marvelous and I loved it for everything but typing on which I will admit, I do a lot less of these days. There's currently a reasonably well specced 6" phone knocking around on Ebay and Amazon for £60 I may go for one of them and see how I get on.

Yeah I like the keyboard. I've currently got a Passport but want something more phablet. The Priv is nice but it's far too expensive. I've been looking at the Huawei P8 max with 8 cores and a 6.8" screen but will probably get the cheapy at first.

I could go balls out again but tbh I really don't want to. The Passport cost me £450 and all I've really done is worry about it. I was looking at new Iphones the other day but the Huawei is half the price (around £280) and murders the Iphone in specs.

I recently bought a £40 Android tablet and whilst the screen isn't much to write home about it certainly wasn't lacking spec wise. Quad core and 2gb ram. Ran everything I threw at it.

Or the Huawei P8 Max. This is a little dodgier though because the only place you can get them is Hong Kong.

I'm kinda leaning toward the Lenovo atm. Obviously I'd prefer the Huawei but am a little worried about the whole Hong Kong thing.

It is enormous yes. However, given I mostly use my phone for internet use and so on it's not so huge when compared with a tablet. Which is basically what I am looking for, something to do tablet duties but also being able to take phone calls on. I did buy a 3G tablet a couple of years ago but it was useless for calls. You couldn't put it to your head (obs, it was over 7") and the speakerphone was utterly useless on it. Had the speakerphone worked better I would probably still have it.

In other words what I'm saying is that I'm more in the market for a tablet like device that can take and make calls. I don't go out much so there's no risk of looking stupid in public etc.

Hah. To give you an idea of how much I use my phone I have had my 3 sim card (PAYG) for around two years. I've put £70 on it and most of that went on data.

That's the thing dude, who fuckin' uses phones these days? My wife and my girls (step daughters) are on BBM/WhatsApp etc and I have a landline I use to phone my mother. Other than that? I basically never use it unless I am calling a cab (because they text you when they are outside) or rarely my doctor when I am out. Nobody has my phone number I don't even know it myself (apart from my wife and daughters of course).

So yeah, we're looking at maybe one phone call every three months and if I look like a bellend so be it.

Thing is dude I fucking know what will happen. I'll buy a tablet, then I won't want to carry my phone any more and it will end up in a dust pile. Wherever I go I would take the tablet any way (as there's always WIFI at mum's, my uncle and aunt's and so on) so the last thing I would want to be doing is carrying two devices. If I get something reasonable in quality I would not need to put it to my head any way. My Passport is very chunky and I look stupid using that as a phone.

So I may as well buy one device that can act as both a tablet and a phone and then that way it will actually get used, and not end up in the "Pointless hair brain ideas" junk pile.
