Ben Stiller's dad is Jerry Stiller, who is one of the funniest things ever as Mr Costanza. By mere association he gets a pass. As for Ben, he's just vaguely depressing in that he can be funny, but so often chooses to be in dreck so he can pay off more mortagages or something. Owen, we can forgive, because he clearly deep-down deplores the insiduous system that dictates that 'bankable' stars must pad out their time between arty Wes Anderson type films and rare crowd pleasing genuine funnies with awful Rom-Com or family comedy badness, which possibly explains his suicide attempt*.

Owen's a genuinely clever and funny chap who is apparently hugely nice, and is a good writer. Just because he feels he should do bad films as everyone else in the machine does, doesn't make him a person one should stay away from, wonky nose and all.

Also, why can't there be more family films like A Knight's Tale, eh? I watched that not so long ago and found it most excellent. What gives? Also, actors I like should be forbidden from voicing films involving wackily disparate anthropomorphisised animals including 'sassy one', 'sarcastic one', 'John Ratzenberger one' in an 'out of their element' setting involving leaving home/finding home.

In fact the next writer who pens one of those should be shot in the back of the head, as a warning.

I love both those guys. Does Nic Cage really have two acting styles, though? Surely he just has his one "look as if you're wondering whether you've just shat yourself or not" style? Unless you count "I'm talking to you, but inside I'm trying to decide whether or not I've shat myself" and "I'm shouting at you, but inside I'm trying to decide whether or not I've shat myself" as different styles?

Oh come on! Owen's nowt like that fucking awful sleepy eyed waste of space that Nic Cage is. Have you seen Darjeelling Express, Tennenbaums, Aquatic? Any Wes Anderson film? Owen's flipping excellent in all of them, especially as Ned. No way they're the same, no way at all. He has "over the top Wild At Heart ruining shouty" and "weepy eyed quiet sad man" styles. Nothing in between.

I was wondering that too. Last two films I saw with him in were The Weather Man ('A Chicago weather man, separated from his wife and children, debates whether professional and personal success are mutually exclusive') and Next ('A Las Vegas magician who can see into the future is pursued by FBI agents seeking to use his abilities to prevent a nuclear terrorist attack.') and he might as well have walked off the set of one onto the other.

I, too, have a soft spot for the Cage. I can't even start to explain it except that he makes me laugh. Sometimes even when he's intending to.

AHA! What about "out-of-his-depth-terrible-actor", as seen in The Rock, Ghost Rider and Next? Eh? EH?

Luckily, I haven't seen those. The fact that he was in Wild at Heart and Raising Arizona are blight enough on two (three?) of my favourite director's oeuvre.

Mind boggling genius. The fever one's the best. I like how he shouts it as if he's driving away from a regretable career move.

Some friends dragged me to see The Ugly Truth, whilst quite boozed. If I recall correctly, it's a romantic comedy about this over-confident chauvinist who has a TV show in which he explains to blokes that women are simple and easy, and who falls in love with a woman who (initially) thinks he's a massive prick. I remember laughing occasionally, but ultimately finding it rather unpleasantly soppy and sentimental. Not least because the ending predictably sees Billy Big Bollocks becoming a nice, modern man.

(By the by, it had never occurred to me that there was anything odd about Owen Wilson's schnozzer, but that's probably because I am a member of the Dr Ashen Werepig Lightning Brigade. )

So a toned-down version of Tom Cruise's character in Magnolia that breaks the Seinfeld "no hugging, no learning" rule? Do not want.

Con Air was bloody good.

He also has "Argh! The Bees!!!" style acting.

Oh, I dunno about Stiller - I simply don't think he's funny. Or at least not as funny as he thinks. Don't have a problem with Owen Wilson at all and don't really care too much about Nic Cage either way TBH, but he has done some awful fucking shit I admit.

Top prize for loathsome prick on celluloid is won hands down by Matthew Mahogany or whatever his name is. TruFax.

Also disagree. And Colm Meany is awesome in it, and has the best name ever. I mean, 'Colm Meany'. I could say it all day.

His DS9 co-star Nana Visitor has a pretty fucking odd name, too.

Dunno why I watched Urban Legend last night on Fiver.. it was crap the first time I saw it.

I had that on cassette. It was very cheesy, with a 'realistic' first half told Orson Welles stylee, and then Patrick Moore saving the Queen by beating up an alien in the second half. Remarkably, it was pretty awful.

I saw a trailer for a movie called 'Dance Flick' last night. It appears to be a parody of MaliA's fave types of movie but done in the *retch* Scary Movie style. I weep for the world.

I gave a heavy sigh when I saw the advert for that, too. Especially the bit featuring a newborn baby sliding across the dance floor.

To be fair, I didn't pay attention to the trailer at all, but I'm guaranteed to sigh at any film with a generic self-describing genre title.

If that ad has some of the best bits of the film in it, I dread to think what the rest is like.

I suffered through 10 minutes of Meet the Spartans the other day. Made by the same people. It's like they've watched Airplane or Naked Gun and completely missed the funny.

Oh god - flashback to the opening 10 minutes of Date Movie.

I'll not discuss it here, suffice to say, I don't turn many films off in abject disgust, but that one got the same treatment as 'Freddie got Fingered'

I watched Airplane! with Miss Malabar a couple of days ago. She didn't see the funny, apart from a few titters every so often. She must be broken.
