Good news.. I’m due to upgrade my phone on Sunday
Bad news.. My friend who works at Orange just called to say they’ve sold out of Desires.
Good news.. He said they might have one at Orange in Wolverhampton.
Bad news.. That doesn’t open till an hour later.
Good news.. They do have one in stock!
Bad news.. It’s been fingered.

Forget it. I’m not having a phone that’s been opened.

I’ll get one next week.

Such is the trouble with sticking vagina ports on phones these days: everyone wants a virgin. Still, at least the culprit didn't stick his cock in it.

The vagina port is being replaced with Micro-USB anyway.

It is in Japan. If I set my N95 to Japanese language it goes CLEEEK very loudly when you take a photo.

I was in the O2 shop getting my MicroSim set up earlier, and aside from the queue of people getting i4s (How fucking annoying that they had stock and mine is on a plane), there were three people exchanging broken Desires.

FTFY

Seriously though, that sounds worrying. I'll check with my friend who works in Orange and see what he thinks.

I do reckon it could be down to people not being savvy enough to work them. When I worked in GAME I had tons of people bring back PC games because they didn't know how to work them.

Me - "What's your processor speed?"
Customer - "It's XP"
Me - "Right.. And your RAM?"
Customer - "Yes. It's got that too."

I imagine phones could be of a similar ilk.

I figured that and to be honest, he probably would have mentioned it in all the times I've been on at him that I'm going to upgrade to one.

Still, I'll have a chat with him tomorrow. I like listening to his stories of dumb customers.

My only quibble with the Desire so far is that I've had to charge it overnight every night so far.

I am using it a *lot* at the moment though. Once the initial excitement wears off, I'll be looking into battery saving techniques, but for now, all bells and whistles are ON!

What's bad about charging your phone every night? I've always[1] used my phone as my alarm clock and kept it on charge next to my bed.

[1] Well, since I first bought a mobile phone in about '98.

Not complaining, it's just that I've never had to do that before. The Nokia would go for 3 days sometimes.

Although that's more of a sad reflection of how many calls I get.

It's a bit of an inconvenience if you have a work phone too though. Thankfully my personal phone only needs charging twice a week and my work blackberry gets charged once a week.

Know what you mean dav, sometimes if I'm out I won't play with my desire too much as I can tell the battery will run out soon. It's my own fault though, I use it as a laptop basically.

Me too.
However, if you *need* to charge it every night (because you've been using it loads) then it's putting a full cycle on every 24 hours. If you are only actually reaching empty after 3 days instead, then it will last much longer even if you still top it up every night. In fact frequent top ups are probably better than running it empty regularly.

Does it last a full day though? My big problem with the G1 is that if I go out in the morning with a fully charged phone it might not make it though the day.

I guess. Did they specifically mention anything about resisting drops at all? Their web site says the screen is more durable and scratch-resistant.

I charge mine every night regardless of how much juice is left, though I do completely drain it every so often and recharge to full. I haven't noticed any negative effects on the battery over the course of a year on any of my iPhones, which leads me to be baffled whenever people complain about the non-removable battery.

The G1 seems atrocious with its battery from my brief experience. I don't know if it's due to running background apps or something, but Miss Malabar has the same experience as you there: when she arrives at mine in the evening, her phone is always begging to be charged, after an entire day's use as an MP3 player and a little tweeting. I'm sure there's something she could do to alleviate the problem a bit.

Apparently background data use is a problem for android phones. Certain elements of the OS can be accessing data and location services all day, pretty much maintaining a constant connection. This being Android of course, you can switch it off.

But to answer Joans' question... I reckon with my current heavy use, the battery is going for a full day. I disconnect in the morning (say 7am) and when it's down to about half when I get home around 6pm and lasts through the evening until I plug in before bed. It'll be down to maybe 10% by then, but I do use WiFi when I'm home.

Does WiFi drain more than 3G?

Using a phone as an MP3 player all day would drain most batteries, wouldn't it?

For seven hours, surely not that much. Mine will last 30+ as just an MP3 player.

It's up to the Desire to tell it. It should be 100% wide all the time.

If it's anything like the iPhone, however, it'll utterly cock up if you change the orientation while the page is still loading. Try not to do that. Craster.

Using a process of 'paying attention', it only loses width if I use the back button. So I'll stop doing that.

Really? I tend to leave my Samsung Jet until it's down to ~20% before plugging it in. That's probably about every 3 days. I worry because when it's fully charged it beeps and prompts "DISCONNECT FROM CHARGER". I may be imagining the " OR I'M GOING TO RAPE YOU AND SHIT ON YOUR TV!" addendum but it definitely gives that impression. Not that I wake up to do so, ever.

Yes, in general, more frequent shallower cycles are better.
Whether the battery will wear out from heat degradation / calendar life before cycle life is a difficult question though.
Also most people change their phones long before it becomes an issue nowadays.
