The 360 version, of course, doesn't have the Endgame.

These people, perhaps, who don't want to build?:

Said it before and I'll say it again. When the PC version was the same as what the 360 version is now, you were all wanking over it. It's not like it's shit or anything. Further, they're updating it anyway.

No-one, of course, has said it's shit. They've said it's not (yet) as good as the PC version. Which is pretty unarguably true.

I have, for a while harboured a desire to temporarily convert the pazland server into a full on SMP server to see how far away dedicated team could go in a set time. The server can now comfortably handle 10 players plus monsters. I reckon it would make an excellent Beex game night

Are you suggesting infesting Pazland??

We did discuss whether it would work, and I was saying about build a huge quarantine wall around the city. However, monsters will just spawn everywhere so you can't keep them out of anywhere, even if it is lit.

No, just backing up and removing pazland for an evening and having some jolly funtimes on a new map.

Then putting pazland back on.

They don't react, do they? Apart from Zombies I didn't think they did anything, and the Iron Golems (if they ever got out of the pool) are intended to protect them.

I find the thought of Pazland overrun more upsetting than entertaining.

That's massively damning. I bet my Barad-Dim is around 250x250 blocks at least.

Another way of thinking of it is that carts travel at 8m/s at top speed (when boosted by powered rails). Each block in Minecraft is a metre, so that's 480 blocks per minutes you'll cover. Some of the stations on the CPR are 4 or 5 minutes apart...

Looks worse than Fortresscraft. Purchasers have been able to play in browser from the official site since Alpha, anyway.

I should perhaps have posted in a nerdier thread.

It's open source, too (https://bitbucket.org/grumdrig/halfblock).

That screenshot is unlikely. He's basically standing in the grounds of St Thomas' hospital there - can't see Johnson doing that without getting lynched ;)

Hearthly Jnr working on her first Minecraft construction.

As she's already very adept at WoW, getting used to the first-person perspective came pretty naturally to her, and she wasn't overfaced by the controls at all. (She's better at it than Mrs Hearthly, in fact.)

Lovely to watch her get so into it, as great as WoW has been for her, you're basically playing in someone else's world, whereas in Minecraft of course, you make your own.

She's playing with my account which I got when I bought the game back in 2011 (the game never really jangled my bells and I haven't even looked at it for years), the username and password I created back then still work fine, and got her straight in and playing on the latest version which is 1.9.

Mode of choice is 'Creative' as she's not too keen on the idea of monsters and dying (she absolutely hates it if one of her characters dies in WoW, we are the most risk-averse family questing group in the history of time), and it works perfectly as she has all the materials and tools in the game to just make whatever she wants in her own time.

This game has proved to be a massive hit with Mrs Hearthly and Hearthly Jnr.

Hearthly Jnr is using my old account from years ago, and Mrs Hearthly has bought the game too.

The media centre PC is now serving an extra role as a Minecraft Server which they both log into from their own computers, and therefore they can work on the world together.

It's in CREATIVE mode with no baddies or deaths, and flight is allowed, they're basically just using the game as a massive virtual Lego set and new structures are appearing on a daily basis.

It's a fantasic game, kudos to that clever Mojang chap who made it.

Running the server doesn't seem to place any significant load on the media centre PC, about 1GB of RAM for the server's Java processes, and keeps its four CPU cores at around 20%-25% load (two real, two hyper-threaded, it's an i3), disk usage and I/O, and network I/O, are insignificant. I've set up a batch job that backs the server directory up every night to an external drive as the world has already had tens upon tens of hours spent on it and they'd be gutted to lose it.

For some reason the game never tickled my fancy back in the day and still doesn't particularly interest me, but they're loving it to pieces.

Are you on V1.9?

I'm not sure how much has changed in the game over the years but they've been breeding and domesticating animals, planting forests and all sorts of things. Latest creations are a cat sanctuary, a dog sanctuary and a horse sanctuary - when the weather turns horrible Hearthly Jnr corrals all the horses into the stable as she doesn't want them outside in the rain and thunder and lightning :D

The variety of the building materials is amazing too.

Notch (Markus Persson) is the guy who made it. Mojang is the company now owned by Microsoft.

Sorry I was being lazy I knew it was some Nordic named chap but couldn't be bothered to Google so just called him 'Mojang' as that's what comes up on the loading screen on Mrs Hearthly and Hearthly Jnr's computers :)

Didn't he sell the company to Microsoft for like A HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS or something?

I was pleased to see my account from 2011 (and not used since then) still logged in fine and let Hearthly Jnr use the latest version of the game.

I believe the difference is mainly in combat.
Which you won't see unless you go to survival modes.

Honestly though, both the 1.8 and 1.9 updates are pretty weak as compared to the 1.7 mods that are available.

Has it changed a lot in the past 2 or so years, then? I stopped playing mainly because I got bored, (and... also because I realised I'd put more hours than I ever want to think about in the game) but I've been meaning to DL and try it out again recently.

So then Hearthly Jnr sort of 'broke' the Minecraft server on the media centre PC. She's been beavering away feverishly for weeks on the expansion that she's been planning, and expanding out massively in all directions, creating several new zones, and linking them all with powered minecart tracks. She's also created a massive number of objects, animals, storage locations - all kinds of things. (She has massive breeding farms complete with slaughterhouses, and runs regular mass culls to get all the resources off the animals.)

The expansion is called 'INVASION OF THE CATS' and as you can imagine, she's put loads of cats everywhere.

I'd noticed that the server console had started chucking the occasional error message:

Can't keep up! Did the system time change or is the server overloaded?

But of late they were getting far more regular, and to the point where it was chucking them even if no one was actually logged into the server. (At its worse the server was logging as it being 30000-40000ms behind (!) what the clients were doing.)

Eventually it just started crashing (much to Hearthly Jnr's chagrin), I did a bit of research into it but decided in the first instance to take the quick and dirty option and chuck MORE RESOURCES at it.

It should be noted that the media centre PC isn't awful. It's a dual-core i3 2.8GHz with hyper-threading and 4GB RAM, along with a standard 500GB desktop hard drive - but it clearly wasn't up to the task.

I installed the server on Mrs Hearthly's PC which is a quad-core i5 at 3.5GHz, 8GB of RAM and an SSD, moved the troublesome world over to it - and exactly the same world runs fine on there. It does chuck the occasional error message when both Mrs Hearthly and Hearthly Jnr are working flat out, but it never seems to get more than 4000-5000ms behind and other than that no errors at all.

Anyway, the crisis was averted, as Hearthly Jnr was getting extremely hot under the collar when the server started crashing....

You can assign more memory to the server at launch. I think it defaults to 512mb.

Pazland runs on an ancient quad core with 4gb of ram and is pretty big these days (despite having no users, hint hint) and spreads across numerous maps and worlds, but runs fine. More ram for Java. Oh yes
