Actually, yes.

I wonder if I need to look at my setup at home. I might have a bottleneck somewhere. It's a fucking 20MB cable connection with a 2MB upstream. It shouldn't seem slow.

Hamachi has been dog-slow for me everytime I've tried and use it for something.

Is that not just the nature of a VPN?

Are there faster options?

But I like shiny click buttons and GUIs.

That uses *nix commands doesn't it? I swore off them when the uni email stopped using Telent :)

Are you actually an IT guy? Or has having a baby melted your brain or something? :p

No it's dead easy, there's a GUI for the terminal side, the only CLI bit is logging in. On the server just make sure SSH is running and open / forward the port - piece of cake on the Mac at least.

Stop it! Sworn off it, I said!

(Ok, I'll try it)

Speaking of farming, there's one just near the mine entrance now, behind the road. Dunno how the crops will have fared without my checking on them, but seeds are easy enough to find if you grab a hoe. Three wheat makes one bread!

FUCK IT

Clearly the network bods have *all* of the ports locked down tighter than throughsliver's t-shirt.

I've tried dozen of different combinations of ssh at both ends, but every port, even 80, is apparently closed.

BALLS TO IT.

What? 80 outbound can't be closed or you wouldn't be posting here.

It's alright though... I wonder how much caching goes off... I think we end up downloading the chunks every time.... mind at the moment every time I join something goes bang within a second or two and I go climb a tree to save my ass.

So what's this about a server then? Is it a fresh world or the same one we had before? I have a very deep mine on the old one.

Man, if only a post history was still on beex so people could read back a couple of pages instead of asking the same questions over and over. That'd be ace. We should invent that.

Oh snap! I read the last 10 pages to repent.

We did. It cost me £35/month for six months out of my own pocket so, unsurprinsgly, when people stopped playing, I cancelled it. You won't find a VPS with enough RAM to run Minecraft (about 1.5 GB) for much less than that.

He's not paying for it, he's stopped because nobody logged in for months.

Now, with the slight revival, we're getting a small number of regulars on, IAW and SA and Cookie, which my ADSL can handle. Max concurrent users is set to 3.

If people want a massive revival then sure, pay £35 a month then

As always, I don't mind really.
Beex is still cheaper than the £50 a month I offered Stu not to do the £2 a month thing.

I have my own server. It's the ultimate exercise in antisocial gaming. I have monsters turned off and cancel night before it has a chance to kick in. I have unrestricted materials and don't have to worry about breaking anything. Also... no distractions.

It's ace. :D

I'm so lonely :'(

I have an underground one on the Wicker Man side of the Megalith, but you'll need to craft the actual minecart to use with it.

Is anyone playing Ace of Spaces? It's essentially minecraft crossed with a WW1 capture the flag game. RPS piece:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/04/13/10-reasons-you-need-to-play-ace-of-spades/#more-56887

Main website is at http://ace-spades.com/ (currently down, probably due to the RPS mention).

This sounds like something we could have a bloody good laugh with.
