It's called Surfly but I'm uninstalling it now. If it can't even type properly, it's not worth bothering with.

I've Googled that and it doesn't seem to actually be a browser; it's just a way to share your session in a browser with someone else. Indeed it makes a big deal of how it doesn't require you to install anything?

A house we viewed is under accepted offer (5k below asking). The sellers want us to come and have a second look. The offer is 15k more than I/we/MrsA was going to offer, so I presume they want full asking. I really should get our gaff up for sale and get MrsA to sort out her job.

Post subject:  Re: Bits & Bobs 44

Sometimes Google seems to be fucking terrible. I wanted to know if a particular game had ever been released for Android so I searched for and yet it moves android. The first hit there for me is the Wiki page for the game, which struck me as odd given that I'd checked the wiki page which had no mention of Android. Sure enough, doing a find on the current version of the wiki page found no mention of that word. I thought maybe 'android' had been mentioned on the page when Google last looked at it and subsequently removed but Google's cached version of the page also doesn't mention Android at all. Why the fuck is that page the top hit for a search when one of the search terms doesn't exist on the page at all? Surely that's a cardinal sin in the search engine business?

Author:  Bamba [ Thu May 28, 2015 10:56 ]
Post subject:  Re: Bits & Bobs 44

Interestingly Bing does a similar thing in that it returns the game's official site as the top hit even though it also doesn't mention Android at all. What the fuck?

To require a word on Google (and maybe others), you put it in speech marks.

Post subject:  Re: Bits & Bobs 44

I actually though you put a + before it (which I tried and it made no difference) whereas the quotes is for if you want to look for a set of words in a particular order. Although it's still a weird concept, if I didn't want results including that word I just wouldn't have put it in the query at all, why should you have to 'confirm' that you meant to add it?

Author:  markg [ Thu May 28, 2015 13:26 ]
Post subject:  Re: Bits & Bobs 44

Because it will exclude any results that don't contain that term.

Author:  Grim... [ Thu May 28, 2015 13:27 ]
Post subject:  Re: Bits & Bobs 44

It's to make sure words are on the page in a particular order, but just putting one word does the same thing (ie. makes sure it's on the page). Putting a "bare" word at the end makes it less important than the words at the start (if you put Android first you get different results).

A plus sign did used to make a word required, but now it makes it prioritise Google Plus results.

Yes, I get that, but my argument is that should be the default behaviour. If I didn't want the results to definitely include a specific word then I just wouldn't have typed that word in my query in the first place.

Now that I did not know; I thought everything was equally weighted and you could just put search terms in any order you wanted. Good to know.

Sometimes your search might be quite a long bit of text that you've copied and pasted, an error message perhaps. So google might find lots of stuff that's relevant despite the fact it doesn't contain all the words and filtering out all the results which don't have one crucial part can be helpful.

Post subject:  Re: Bits & Bobs 44

Also they're getting better at natural language searches, so 'is and yet it moves available on android' also turns up better results, even though "android" is at the end again.

Which is good for people that are new to this kind of thing and haven't had years of practise optimising things for search engines like we have.

Today everyone in our 11 person team had a meeting to attend, apart from me and another.

Nobody locked their PCs as they went, so the other girl and myself took a 'selfie' with a mobile phone, quickly emailed it to everyone and then set it as everyone's desktop background.

That's far too tame. Next time send an email out to the entire office announcing that they'll bring cakes in tomorrow, then delete the copy from their own inbox so they don't know about it.

:this:

You've got to have one hell of a thick skin and supreme lack of self awareness not to immediately resign in the wake of key members of the organisation you've headed for however long being very publicly indited for fraud and corruption etc. 'Disgrace' doesn't even begin to cover it; does rather beg the question just what would it take?

Football is a global laughing stock and a bad joke; I'll be watching the sweltering, farcical Qatar World Cup just for the lulz.
