In response to A Parkers letter RE: disciplining children. I think you’re right that parents should be able to smack their children when they seem upset in public, but why stop there?

I’ve seen plenty of adults upset in my time so perhaps I should have gone to smack them as well? If a smack around the back of the legs wouldn’t work, why not a quick ‘one two’ to the jaw? You seem to think that violence will bring an end to any upset and teach respect, so why indeed stop at children? I, like most people, have had plenty of disagreements at work that have been solved with meetings and conferences. If I’d have known that a smack around the back of the legs would have solved this, then I would have gone straight to my fists and saved everyone a lot of time.

You also mention that teachers and police should be able to smack children. I'm sure that plenty of people agree with you that we’d all be happy for our police officers to go around beating up children for their wrong doings. Once this rule has become well established, then perhaps they could extend the same rules to adults? Been caught speeding? No problem. A bloody nose will teach you the error of your ways.
