Your fish skin suit is a real headturner too.

That's not a suit, I just like dressing myself in the skins of my victims.

The missus was a pescetarian until she moved in with me. This was largely because the meat she had when growing up was usually cooked to within an inch of its life, and as such wasn't very nice.

Once we got together, she just wanted more variety in stuff both at home and in restaurants, so slowly started back on the road to carnivorous recovery.

A heartwarming tale I'm sure you'll agree (unless you're a veggie).

:D

The new General Motors chairman isn't popular after his new ad:

The 'putting our money where our mouth is' line in particular isn't going down well. Whose money, sorry?

Whilst myp is right in that you can't be a vegetarian and eat fish, it was one of those things that people (lots of people) say. just like people say pin number (I mean ffs I've started seeing adverts with people saying that!) or pacific (when they mean specific) or whatever, and yes it's annoying, but it's really hard to make people change, and they probably think it's really annoying to have you try and change them when they don't see that they are wrong (because everyone else is saying the same thing).

As for comparing the differences between vegetatrians and alcoholics, I know several people who would readily adming to the latter and consider the former an insult, so ya know...

But it is a technique that Grim... has used in the past, and I'm sure he will use it again.

Subtle, but effective, me.

Alcohol abuse (out of interest) is termed as more than 20 units for a lady, or more than 26 for a man in a week.
That's about 7 (or eight for a chap) pints of Stella (or comparable strength lager, of which there are many) per week.

That's, you know, most of the people I know. Including myself.

Dislaimer: Number of units taken from what they watch out for in Social Work, but I think it's a government guideline thing.

My boss just phoned me, claiming he had a missed call from me. I've checked, and there's no way I phoned him, so I can only assume he'd accidentally dialled my number, cancelled the call, noticed it in his recent calls list without looking at the icon, and assumed I'd phoned him all along.

Or he has one of those phones that flashes all your missed calls up on the screen when you turn it on (unless you delete them all after every alert) even if those calls are three weeks old, and he didn't check the date on it.

If he carries on using this logic, you're actually allowed to sack him.

Maybe he secretly fancies you and just wanted an excuse to call you. Or he was calling to sack you and then bottled it and had to think of something else and he's getting his secretary to write a letter instead.

I can understand people that don't eat meat because they don't like it, but still eat fish because they enjoy that. I don't so much get the line that it is cruel to eat meat but not fish because of the differences in the nervous systems - when I've seen documentaries on fishing the fish that are gasping for air and suffocating on the deck of a ship look pretty distressed to me, but I'm hardly an expert.

I actually have some kind of phobia around fish. I'm fine when they are alive and swimming - I can be in a pool of fish, pick up a fish, all fine, but when any kind of fish product is served on a plate to someone near me it freaks me out. I don't know why - even if it is a bland-looking square fillet, it just makes me feel odd. I try to hide it - I remember once Craig was eating some salmon and I said 'that looks nice' (trying to hide the fact that it was freaking me out) and he said 'ooh, here try some' and put a little of it on my plate, and I ran out of the room crying, looking like a mental case.

I do also worry about the problems of over-fishing. Many people say they eat fish because it is less cruel than eating meat because of welfare issues on farms, etc, but I don't know how much caring it is to fish some breeds until they are endangered. As someone up-thread noted, there is a difference between farmed fish and fish caught on a trawler, but I don't know how easy it is to shop for one rather than the other because it is not on my shopping list :P

I like fish (NB: I am not Troy McClure) but find entirely intact dead ones (such as you'll see on a pile of ice in the fishmonger) distressing as they look kind of sad and dead. It was even worse when I was once served an entirely intact (well, it had been gutted) fish with the head still on. It just seemed to be looking up at you, mouth open as if its lip was trembling, wondering why it had to die.

I don't have the same problem with dead chickens/pigs/cows/sheep, before you ask.

How much time do you spend with other dead animals? We tend to only really encounter whole dead fish because like that they are ready to cook - the same cannot be said for any other animals. I guess you could leave the feet and head on a chicken - I'm thinking people wouldn't like that.

I think people on the "fish don't feel pain" side of the fence say this is just instinct, which it could well be.
I doubt we'll ever know, though.

As a youngster, I had the great misfortune of being "given" a job by my maternal uncle in one of his butcher shops. You can get used to the most awful things given enough time. TruFax.

I say given, but I don't think it would have gone down too well to say no. And I was 12 and the bosses nephew, a boss who was frequently in the pub by opening times leaving me to the wise counsel of his mysogynistic retarded staff. Boy, that was a learning experience ;)

Basically all I'm saying is that I got used to handling all aspects of butchery - hell, literally on my first day I was given three bin liners full of offal and told to remove the heart and liver from the lights.

What are the conditions like in fish farms, though? And even fish caught naturally in bulk are hardly treated well, what with the 'being crushed under the weight of thousands of other fish on top of you, while you suffocate' bit.

Despite it being part of my day to day life I still hate seeing fish suffocate.

Same as zoos. They keep them in cages, feed them well & keep them disease free.
Either that or your freshfishwaterfish are kept in ponds, I suppose they're like free range :DD

Which bits are 'the lights'. The only other time I'd heard that word in that context is the chilling, "Look Netley, lights!" bit in From Hell, which finally sends poor Netley over the edge.

Warning: Curio has written an essay on CoD4. It's good stuff but it's far longer than any other writeup so it should probably be edited down to fit in.
