I remember really quite liking it when it came out, but of all the Christmas films we watched last year it was the one that put me in the Christmas spirit the least. |

Been listening to it in the car with the Mini-Fop and the 'kidnapping' is pretty scary stuff, given it's from the child's perspective. Looking forward to the film very much, can't think of anyone more perfect for the role than Mark Rylance (apart from Grandpa Jim Brennan from Eastenders). Also, I remember The Witches movie scaring the shit out of me, all those weird baldies peeling their hair off. If only I'd known what life had in store. |

Just watched gothic-horror film CRIMSON PEAK. Look of the film is absolutely gorgeous. It's well-acted by Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain etc. as you'd expect. It's just a bit dull though, overlong, and not scary in the slightest (the CGI ghosts that appear alongside cliched high-pitched sound effects just made me go "meh"). If you want to see a really good, effective, ghost story from the same director (and don't mind subtitles - it's in Spanish I think), watch THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE. Um, 6/10 (mostly for the production values - that was the main reason I stuck with it until the end). |

I'd agree with all of that. I would definitely say I enjoyed it and it's worth watching but mostly for the look of it and the cast. Not least because Mia Wasikowska is lovely. |

A distinct lack of Will Smith, and the original was pretty rubbish. That looks arse. And Randy Quaid went mad. Jeff Goldblum is good but one could always just rewatch The Fly, in which he plays Jeff Goldblum. And even he's gone a bit weird with one of those young enough to be his daughter girlfriends. Well it's stretching beyond the outer edges of what you'd ever describe as a Star Trek film, but the original reboot already rewrote the rulebook in that regard and was fantastic so I'll let it off. (Into Darkness wasn't great though.) |

As a fan of the original Paranormal Activity I have suffered the diminishing returns from the sequels so when Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension came along with its terrible subtitle I thought I'd see what's what. I couldn't even watch more than 30 minutes. It's that bad. Seriously bad. Like Blair Witch 2 bad. The, now clichéd, premise of someone recording everything is given a twist on the previous instalments by the unsuspecting victims finding, get this, a special video camera that can see ghosts. Yes. That bad. No more can be said. |

I well fancied the lass in the first one, but have watched none of the sequels, it was clearly going to be one of those 'franchises' where watching past the first one was entirely unnecessary. (Plus I remember the second one reviewing badly so that didn't help either.) I applied this logic to The Matrix films, so have only ever seen the first one, so to me it's this awesome standalone film totally unbesmirched by terrible sequels. |

They've reviewed increasingly badly, I really liked the first one so was keeping an eye out for the second one, and as the reviews started to come in I figured I'd give it a miss. In particular a few of the key reviewers I've found my tastes tend to align with all gave it a thumbs down. I'm not saying I absolutely won't watch a film where they all say they don't like it, but my experience over the years has been that in that scenario I won't get much if anything out of the film in question. Unfortunately Roger Ebert died though, and he was one of reviewers. I note however that the lass out of the first one is in the second one, so that might be a reason to watch it. And overall its reviews aren't appalling. |

The Matrix was just some silly tosh that got increasingly silly. Somewhat related I watched nearly all of Jesscia Jones before realising the lawyer woman was Trinity from the Matrix. I have an appalling memory for faces sometimes. |

Just watched 'Dredd'. Lots of fun. Some good action set pieces, and Karl Urban is ace as Dredd. Only minor gripe is that psychic woman seemed to not be telepathic at points, to move the plot along. Which was a bit silly. |

'SICARIO' tonight, that was a very good fillum. Preferred it to 'PRISONERS' which I felt was good, but a bit overrated. (Prisoners was a 6/10 for me IIRC.) So yes, Sicario is better than Prisoners. I'll go 8/10 for Sicario, 'cause it wasn't like out of this world amazing. Thinking about it the MESSAGE DEPLOYMENT DEVICE that the film represented reminded me a bit of Prisoners, a sort of 'Yeah I know it's not all black and white and SHADES OF GREY generally explains things better'. Also I wish Emily Blunt would stop smoking in films, it's a very unattractive look. She was doing it in Looper as well. It wouldn't get her off the list likes, but would certainly represent grounds for the issuing of a cautionary advisory notice. |

Well, it looks like the now traditional "Xmas leaked dvd-screeners that are sent out to Oscar voters season" has started with a bang. The Hateful Eight & The Revenant are both "out there" in good quality before they've hit cinemas. Creed is also "available", as are a few others. The guy / group who leaked Hateful Eight basically said it was the first of 40 screeners he has, and he'll be releasing the rest gradually after he checks them, gets rid of incriminating watermarks that reveal the person they were sent to etc. Somewhat amazed that Hollywood can't find a more secure method of letting Academy members view a potential oscar-winning film than sending them all a physical dvd. Going by the past few years, they always get leaked. Am I complaining ? Um..... |

Obviously I'll be watching The Hateful Eight but it needs to be better than Django Unchained, took me three shifts of one hour apiece to watch that bastard thing. I saw Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction in the cinema back in the day, which kind of hard-wired my brain to believe Tarantino would always be awesome, despite substantial evidence to the contrary since then. (I note that The Hateful Eight is another one that weighs in at three hours.... It's like Quentin hasn't yet discovered the ability in editing suites to remove extraneous material.) As for the general point of dodgy uploading chicanery, aren't the watermarks invisible these days with stuff like Cinavia? |
