Plus of course if you're optically zoomed in and your hands shake by say 1mm, that's going to make a lot more difference when you're zoomed in

I have never had trouble with a camera focusing whilst in zoom mode, only whilst in zoom on super macro mode, but I do not know your camera at all. i have used several Canon cameras though and have never experienced that with any of those, and I think that their general great quality would make this big flaw in their series if it were a problem.

I would like to get to understand focal length, aperture and speed settings more accurately. I currently go by the standard 'twiddle a few buttons, dials and switches and see what happens', but I will put aside some time in the future to actually work out or learn what each setting does.

Is this a thread in which to ask for advice too? If not I'll move this post, if so... I took these two pictures today, the only difference between the first and the second is I reduced my zoom for the second as it seemed to be causing the blurring. Is it something I need to adust to compentsate, or just something I need to learn to live with? Oh, it's uploaded them the wrong way around - but they are labeled anyway, first one is at the bottom, second at the top.

What camera do you have? There are a couple of reasons that a zoomed in photo can be blurrier: Zooming in can reduce the amount of light entering the lens. The camera will lower the shutter speed to compensate, making it more susceptible to a shaky hand. If it's a digital zoom rather than an optical one, you will get more noise. That does look like blurring rather than noise though, to be honest. Some cameras have a tougher time focussing when zoomed in.

It does look like blurring rather then the noise from a digital zoom, but it is hard to tell at that size. I'm pretty sure it's blurring, I have other examples too. I've only cut down the size for posting on here, I do have the original quality shots too. I really can't remember if I had it on auto or manual Mimi, I've been doing some playing around with it lately, getting to know it a bit better. Today I was trying to get a decent picture without the flash, there were some babies, and I didn't want to startle their mothers as obviously they are protective at the moment. We went here Mimi, I have to say I was very impressed with the place and the kids loved it too.

The basic rule of thumb for handheld photographs on 35mm standard is that the shutter speed should be about 1/focal length. So if you're at an effective zoom of 200mm, the slowest you should be shooting is 1/200 seconds shutter speed. Any claimed levels of image/optical/vibration stabilization control in the camera should allow you to double that duration for each "stop". Craster already covered the issues with variable aperture lenses and zooms. (Constant aperture lenses are relatively expensive because it takes some engineering to get around the problem)

I don't see anything wrong with multiple entries per person -- I think the objective of this is to firstly, encourage people to get out there and take photos (and this is why, as tempted as I have been, I've not entered with a photo I took before the contest began -- I think that is an excellent rule) and secondly to encourage discussion of said photos on the forum. The contest bit (at least to me) is secondary. As such, I think more photos are a good thing, and it doesn't matter much if some people submit a couple of entries. I can't imagine anyone is going to do anything stupid like upload loads of entries from themselves. Perhaps an agreement on no more than two or three each would be reasonable.

The zoom amount between those to pictures does not seem much, though, it shouldn't account for that much blurring (unless that picture is cropped) Where'd you go to see the munkies, GJ?

It's all about the light. I've taken two identical photos, one in sunshine and one overcast later in the day, and the shutter speed I needed went from 1/250 to 1/10 - too low for (my old, palsied) handholding, and that's with a very good camera.

Hurrah! packs bags I took my nephew to see the monkeys at London Zoo for the first time last week, and we had just the best possible time! But, you know, they were only about six monkeys. Not a whole place dedicated to monkeyness!

I was most disappointed when I went to sainsburys for beer, that when asked for ID, they wouldn't accept a card with my name and a monkey next to it. (It was a card to tell me where to sit at my friend Jims monkey themed wedding, and the first thing I found in my wallet when asked. I did, at least, get a smile though)

Thanks for voting Dudley The outcome of the vote will not take effect until the next contest, either way. At the moment the previously agreed guideline of up to two pictures is in place. The votes are close between one and two pictures for the comp at the moment. I'm looking forward to compiling the poll tomorrow evening..

I think, (not that I'm a twitcher or anything) that that's a Rose Ring parakeet. We have them wild in the park near me, big flocks of them. A decade or so ago it would have really localised the photo as they weren't in many parts of the country, but that have spread to other parts of the UK quite rapidly.
