Help me settle an argument. Can you see any hint of green in this car:

For bonus points, who the fuck not only selects this colour, but also selects blue leather for the interior?

I used to have a car that colour, and it had blue cloth seats too :)

It is yellow.

Hydrasun Yellow in fact.

It's yellow. There is a faint hint of green, but not enough to make it anything other than yellow.

It's yellow. Any green is probably due to digital imaging RGB malarky.

This is interesting. I grabbed a copy of the pic in Sumo Paint (my new favourite toy) and used the eyedropper tool on a bit of the bootlid that was neutral in tone, neither in shadow or highlight. It was hex code #dadd44, where the three couplets are red (0xDA, or 218/255), green (0xDD, or 221/255) and blue (0x44, or 68/255).

I think that’s pretty greenish. And it looks greenish to me, although I accept Ace's suggestion that they may be down to the photo than the car. And yet a few people I've shown it to don't see any green at all.

I'd say yellow with hints of green, personally.

But my monitor is calibrated so it can pick out whacking great big "errors" in amateur photoshops that other people just can't see, so I'm not sure if it's the picture, or other people's monitors just showing "YELLOW".

White is #ffffff, that's 255/255 green. Would you say that was "pretty greenish"?

Edit - you could use your argument to say the car was pretty-reddish.

Edit2- It's yellow.

Um. That's almost exactly the same red and green values, which makes yellow in RGB color space. There's a difference of 3/255 between them, or 1.18% into "green" from "pure yellow". There is some blue, ok, but blue isn't very relevant to "greenness" in RGB

Kids:

It is yellow. Colourwise, it is made up of lots of (equal amounts of) red and green. If you're a bit red-deficient then you're going to see more of the green. Hence you'll think it's greeny.

Definitely yellow. So many LCDs have really odd colour gamuts though, I wouldn't be surprised if it looked green to quite a few of us.

I was fortunate enough to have one of those (in a much more appropriate pearlescent black) stopped at some lights alongside me, and even fortunater to have it aggressively accelerated away on green. Fucking hell they sound nice, nicer than any Ferrari I've heard in real.

Not only that, but yellow is full red, full green, no blue*. So the surprising thing is how blue that yellow is.

* Absurdly, I've had to know this in the last week at work, when normally I need know nothing about colour mixing - or colours at all. I don't normally even have cause to use a colour picker. Or any colours at all, in fact - my usual use of colour is restricted to setting up my development environment after reinstalling Windows.

I opened up the car picture supplied by Richie G and eye-dropped three areas of the car colour - one in semi-shade (top), one in the most neatral area I could find (middle) and one with the light hitting it (bottom).

To my eyes it does look like the yellow of the car has green tones - in all tonal areas but especially in areas of shadow - because part of the car is in shadow it seems to increase, to my eyes, the green tinge that I percieve.

I made a relatively warm yellow patch as well, if you put the two side by side you can see how the eye might perceive some areas of green in the picture.

They're all just different brightnesses of the that mega-yellow?
Infact: Look at the RGB values. In all cases the green and red are within 2 units of each other, if not the same. Which just means they are dimmer versions of the mega-yellow.

ergo: Not green in any way!

Technically incorrect. It is very very very very yellow.

Post subject:  Re: What colour is this car

This is pure yellow (attached).

The yellows in that picture of the car have relatively high blue values (as opposed to the 0 blue value of the 'pure' yellow..) The colours as perceived are quite 'muddy' yellows with the inclusion of some blacks. If you add just a teeny tough of black paint to some yellow, it does look like a pale forest green. I am not saying that it is correct, but it is how many people see it - like adding a tiny spot of black to red would make a colour that many people would think of as brown.

Author:  DBSnappa [ Fri Oct 03, 2008 20:22 ]
Post subject:  Re: What colour is this car

OK. Pure colours, such as this, have a tendency to be very subtly effected by their environment. It's impossible to isolate that colour unless you could shoot the car on a 18% grey background.

I would be inclined to think it is a hue of the cadmium yellow colour, a pale one at that. Any green in it, to my eyes is likely to be attributable to the blue/grey sky and the grey tarmac - they are neutral/cool colours - if you cool yellow down it tends to look green.

Ultimately Rich, it's yellow. It is most categorically not green. It might appear to have a very subtle green hue to it, but that is down to environment. Whichever way you slice it, it's an affront to the eyes and almost ruins one of the better looking cars out there.

Author:  AceAceBaby [ Fri Oct 03, 2008 20:25 ]
Post subject:  Re: What colour is this car

Paint isn't really relevant when talking about colors on a screen. Yellow is made from red and green. The less red or blue in a color, the more green it is. The amount of blue doesn't have anything really to do with how green it is, because green is the G in RGB and it doesn't need any help. The colors are all close in red and green levels, which makes them yellows.

Author:  Zardoz [ Fri Oct 03, 2008 20:27 ]
Post subject:  Re: What colour is this car

You also have to take into account the cars paint finish reflecting the surrounding colours. And obviously the image balance of the camera itself. And everyones monitor calibration. And everyones eyesight. And everyones colour perception. Obv.
