Quote:
Microsoft is giving consumers more gigabytes for their buck. The company today announced an Xbox 360® console with triple the storage space of the original console, but for the same price of $349 (U.S.) estimated retail price.

Available in retail stores in the U.S. and Canada starting in early August, the upgraded Xbox 360 will include a 60GB hard drive for storing the growing wealth of digital entertainment available for the console, including music, movies, television shows, and game content. In addition, Microsoft today dropped the price of its 20GB Xbox 360 console in the U.S. and Canada to just $299 (U.S.) (ERP) while supplies last, a savings of $50.

Good stuff. I've always felt that 20GB was far too small, and to be honest I don't know how anyone's surviving on that alone (I've got about 85GB free from my 120GB Elite drive).

I'm hoping a 250/500GB drive comes out before I fill mine up.

I'd expect it would cost them more to get 20gb drives, unless they're doing that thing where they just format larger ones to smaller sizes like Sony do with their HDD/DVD recorders.

I only have a 20gb one. It seems expensive to upgrade unless there's some cunning way.

I only have a 20GB. I stream all the media off the PC and only download a few demos at a time. I own loads of Arcade games and they all fit. I've got about 5GB free, now.

I'm fine with my 20Gb. I have around 3Gb free, usually, and could have a LOT more if I'd delete a few demos.

I have no need for a bigger hard drive.

Like most people I stream content off my PC over wireless, its great.
I DL a demo or 3 at a time, play, delete.

Dont have more than Id guess 10 XBLA games.

got about 10gb free. woo!
still, hope they do price drop here, then I might finally convince my mate to buy one over a Wii.

If you get any use at all out of the (quite reasonable) HDTV movie rental, 20Gb is woeful. Plus the new dashboard allows you to install games to the hard disk -- 20Gb isn't going to go very far then either. Damn, I bet that would have made Oblivion tons better.

Yeah, if installing to disk works well, I can see myself wanting to upgrade. Does the DRM still suck when you do?

And I bet a 120Gb disk is like a million pounds isn't it?

There's no DRM when you install to disk, but you still need the game disk in the drive.

Whoops, no I meant, when you go from a 20Gb drive to a 120Gb drive - do your XBLA still need to check the web to be played?

Though it's a mute point, as I've just checked and a 120Gb drive is over £100 - get to fucking fuck.

No it's tied to the console not the HDD.

Will installing to disk make things quieter as it won't need to be spinning the DVD drive all the time?

God in heaven you'd hope so. I hadn't realised the 360 was so fucking *loud* - its like having a hairdryer on in the room. Where do they get their disk drives from? Some bloke in a backstreet in Pyongyang?

It's not so bad when you have the volume up loud, but I expect it's quite noticeable for you as you have to have it down low due to the little ones.

It's pretty shocking, isn't it? And I've got the Elite, which is supposed to be quieter, although I'm not sure how true that is. I've not seen (heard) any other to compare it with, but I can't imagine people put up with noisier models than mine.

It is the loudest home electrical thingy I have ever had. The microwave and the oven make less noise. It's a toss up with the washing machine, though.

Given how quiet the DVD drives and fans are in every other piece of kit I have in the house you'd have thought Microsoft could have found something marginally less like a broken jet engine to stick in their Eggboxes.

It goes like this:

Sales Guy: We need to make this shipment date to be in time for Christmas
Engineer: But it's currently running hotter than the sun! Run it for more than three hours and it melts into a pile of slag!
Sales Guy: Well stick a cunting great fan in it then! We need to make this date!

It's not the drive, it's the fans.

All the other kit in your house doesn't need a 12x DVD drive. In order to get that kind of speed, it needs to spin.

(And I just use headphones anyway, due to non disturbance of people I live with, which masks out any noise anyway)

I'm going to check the speeds of the DVD drives in my DVD player and my PC now. Darn sure they're not far off 12x.

And a 32X CD drive makes less noise, so it ain't the revs.

Nah, it's the drive and the fans - it's an inexcusably loud machine and I have one of the quiet ones. If you want to hear it at full tilt, get a copy of Viva Pinata - that's the worst game for spinning the drives, it's sounds like a bloody food mixer.

I think 12X DVD is faster than 32X CD. Also I can't imagine your DVD player goes at 12X, otherwise your films would be over really quickly.

But yes, I think it's a combination of both that makes the 360 so noisy. It certainly seems to get quieter when the DVD drive isn't spinning.

To be fair, my computer is noisy as buggery too, but I put that down to my inability to build a quiet PC that doesn't burn itself to death.

How come the PS3's so quiet?

1x CD != 1x DVD in terms of spin speed, certainly.

PS3 has a 1x bluray, which is painfully slow (See: Why PS3 games require installs)

I believe the spin speed is the same with 1xCD and 1xDVD (~500rpm). The DVD of course reads a lot more data per spin.
