Or it hires a band to sing us happy birthday. I'm happy with either.

Yes. Yes.

This would be SO ACE.

Then, I could remember when Jazzy's birthday was BEFORE her birther.

Interesting. It sends you a reminder if you quote a post with a reminder in it. I just got one about Mimi's birthday.

It's just looking for some words. I could fix that by making it look specifically for a new line and then the words, but I think that would make it harder to use.

It also presumably wouldn't help if the text you quoted had the reminder on a new line as that would still trigger it by that criteria. Wouldn't you be better off detecting text that was inside quotes and then disregarding that? Although that would get messy in the case of nested quotes as you'd need to keep track of open/close quote pairs somehow.

Nah, it's fairly simple regex. I'll do it next time I'm bored at work.

Yeah. In my head I'd leave the news ticker (which isn't on the mobile version anyway) and have a footer with the next thing on it.

Footer's a bit lame. I'd be open to a block below the subforums though

Maybe it can burst onto the screen with every refresh, displayed in some bright sparkly word art and with the non-optional sound of a fanfare playing?

Or, maybe it can just be a static link that says: 'This forum has planned an event. You won't believe what might happen next...'

Oh, the reminder thing worked perfectly, by the way.

The downside was that I thought I had a PM waiting, from an actual friendly person. I'm going to have to set myself daily reminders, so I feel less lonely.

(I'm not really lonely... anymore. Now I spend my days watching the washing machine go around, cross-legged on the floor of the kitchen with a cup of coffee, because 11 week old little babies find that kind of stuff fascinating. :DD )

Dakota Handwriting is the new Comic Sans.

Actually, no, it's far worse. And it is everywhere. Once you notice it, you can never un-see it.

Some changes to the way images work - they'll take up the full screen width (on desktops and mobiles) if they're big enough.

Also mobile images will resize as soon as they load now. Let me know if anything explodes.

So I've narrowed down the issue to the native iPhone camera app. When taking a pic using Camera+ it's the right way up…

It's the EXIF rotation field. I wrote about this in this thread (I think) a while back.

Yes I remember. I was just curious to see if it happened using a different app.

The app can control the JPG, if it wants to, so it's quite possible they may rotate the data (which is a lossy operation) rather than setting the EXIF flag. This means the image is fractionally lower quality, I think, because I don't think iOS apps receive RAW data from the sensor; they get a JPG.

Isn't rotation a straight up pixel-for-pixel move?

You can losslessly rotate JPEGs, but only if the image dimensions are both divisible by 8, or something like that.

8 or 16, depending on the JPEG setting. But some dumb software still does a lossy rotate even if it doesn't have to.

Here's an interesting example of what 2000 rotations does to a JPEG if you do it in a lossy manner:

I genuinely do find the "rise of the shitpic", ie. repeated lossy re-capturing of digital images resulting in excessive degredation, to be really interesting. It's a weird little relic of the VHS analog copy era, flourishing again in our digital age against all logic and reason.

Interesting post, thanks for that.

Conversely, I'm always stunned by the quality of photos taken during the American Civil War and the amount of detail captured in them. Amazing how we think our tech is advanced and not realise what was being achieved by our forebears.
