zaphod79 says: So what does Wikipedia say about the number 34 ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/34_%28number%29

[quote:svxcy8c3]34 (thirty-four) is the natural number following 33 and preceding 35.
[/quote:svxcy8c3]

[quote:svxcy8c3]In mathematics

34 is the ninth distinct semiprime and has four divisors including unity and itself. Its neighbors, 33 and 35, also are distinct semiprimes, having four divisors each, and 34 is the smallest number to be surrounded by numbers with the same number of divisors as it has. It is also in the first cluster of three distinct semiprimes, being within 33, 34, 35; the next such cluster of semiprimes is 85, 86, 87.

It is the ninth Fibonacci number and a companion Pell number. Since it is an odd-indexed Fibonacci number, 34 is a Markov number, appearing in solutions with other Fibonacci numbers, such as (1, 13, 34), (1, 34, 89), etc.

This number is the magic constant of a 4 by 4 normal magic square:[1]
MagicSquare-AlbrechtDürer.png

Thirty-four is a heptagonal number.

It has the aliquot sum, 20, in the following descending sequence 34,20,22,14,10,8,7,1. and it is the 6th composite member of the 7-aliquot tree.

There is no solution to the equation ?(x) = 34, making 34 a nontotient. Nor is there a solution to the equation x - ?(x) = 34, making 34 a noncototient.

In science

    The atomic number of selenium
Messier object M34, a magnitude 6.0 open cluster in the constellation Perseus
The New General Catalogue object NGC 34, a peculiar galaxy in the constellation Cetus
The Saros number of the solar eclipse series which began on 1917 BC August and ended on 384 BC February. The duration of Saros series 34 was 1532.5 years, and it contained 86 solar eclipses.
The Saros number of the lunar eclipse series which began on 1633 BC May and ended on 335 BC June. The duration of Saros series 34 was 1298.1 years, and it contained 73 lunar eclipses.

In sports

The jersey number 34 has been retired by several North American sports teams in honor of past playing greats or other key figures:
        In Major League Baseball:
The Houston Astros and Texas Rangers, both for Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan.
The Minnesota Twins, for Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett.
The Oakland Athletics and Milwaukee Brewers, both for Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers.
Additionally, the Los Angeles Dodgers have not issued the number since the departure of Fernando Valenzuela following the 1990 season. Under current team policy, Valenzuela's number is not eligible for retirement because he is not in the Hall of Fame.
        In the NBA:
The Houston Rockets, for Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon.
        In the NFL:
The Chicago Bears, for Hall of Famer Walter Payton.
The Houston Oilers, for Hall of Famer Earl Campbell. The franchise continues to honor the number in its current incarnation as the Tennessee Titans.

100 pages of pictures is enough to fill a mighty thread, and there were a few un-listened to calls to start a new one which everyone is dutifully ignoring, so I'm kicking the second thread of acebest pictures off with this:

After each month is over, the Table of the Month will go back to it's regular price which will typically range between $1.99 and $2.99 (with $3.99 currently planned for tables with expensive ancillary licenses).[/quote:36f0bxy5]

BeeX WeeX

Ian Fairies says: BeeX Towers. Sitting at his desk Grim... stares wistfully at the wall outside his window and then over to the opposite side of the office at KovacsC. KovacsC can feel his glare as the tenth person that morning pats Kovac on the back and congratulates him on the depressing gloom outside his window. Heads turn from desks scouring the internet for funnies as another pen is forcefully knocked from Grim...'s desk onto the floor. The clatter is heard even over the fleshy noises eminating from Craster's closed office door. Mr Dave loudly proclaims to the office that Craster's Outlook diary has a four hour block simply entitled 'meeting with badgers'. In capitals. There are far too many exclamation marks that follow the pithy description of time.

The office was busy and there was a low chatter of noise as gaming, film and politics was discussed intently.

Just then, MaliA entered the office wearing a luminous red shirt and was promptly struck on the head by an projectile thrown through the second most depressing window view from the office, barely missing Grim...

The shattering glass raises the interest of Zardoz who opens his door for the first time that morning to look out into the office. The unusally shaped appendage adourning his trouserless frame barely registers with the others used to seeing this vile display. Flis does notice briefly that one testicle was wearing a hat and the hair had been trimmed to resemble the Mr Bounder dimlie, but she thought better to raise it with Mimi who was at that exact moment eating a curly wurly.

WTB picks up the projectile to reveal a VHS cassette tape tied around a brick. He starts to read the label but quickly loses interest and starts to play FIFA, again quickly losing interest and doing something else; as is his routine throughout the day.

Davepaz picks up the cassette and inserts it into VHS player lying amongst the jumble of wires, consoles and copies of Dark Souls lying around the office. The tape winds into action and a sinister looking man appears.

[youtube:fdyqeaqk]P9ECBZyQPTY[/youtube:fdyqeaqk]

The tape splutters and comes to an abrupt end. Well have you ever tried to make a video using your mobile and no ability to edit? Yeah, well shut it.

The office surrounds the nearest monitor and reads aloud this week's POTW. Not a single voice mentions that bit where people used to say what the forum had discussed that week. But anyway...

[url=http://www.beexcellenttoeachother.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=664612#p664612:fdyqeaqk]Bummer[/url:fdyqeaqk]

Loud gulps are heard around the office. Mostly from Craster's office whose door remained shut throughout. Unbeknowst to most of the BeeX office MaliA's red shirt had begun consuming desks, chairs, mugs and copies of Skyrim. It is growing at an excessive rate. Dimrill is the only person who has noticed and is fighting the blob using an chair, two facial expressions (both scowls) and an adjective. He appears to be holding the beast back. Back to the crowd at BeeX office, and there are worried faces. "Only 7 POTW's" someone mutters "Has MaliA got another job?"

Minutes pass like years when another brick with a VHS cassette is thrown through the most depressing office window ever shattering the silence. A collective "ahhh, not THAT window" is heard. Grim... loses it and stabs everyone.

[b:fdyqeaqk]Epilogue.[/b:fdyqeaqk]

Somehow the tape is in the recorder.

The TV flickers into life. A bloodstain is smeared across the screen in the bottom corner. The TV is clearly unplugged. An image appears.

This was always going to be THE BIG EVENT in the tech industry. A lot of people have been wondering "is this a technoolgy bubble we're in?" and some say "Yes, this is madness!" whilst others roll arouund in Franklins. I think that this could mark the end of the big dollar IPOs for a while, with more higher profile firms being bought out before going public in this sector. Shares on the secondary market have probably been trading hands at large multiples, propping up ailing pension funds. Still, I'll be watching with great interest. I think it'll peak today at $138 Bn, before settling at $112Bn. What do you think?
