Doctor Glyndwr says: Following discussion in the iPhone thread, we iOS users think we need a "software" thread that covers iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad equally. The older threads can then be more about hardware and stuff. Sound reasonable?

I'm going to go one further, and make two threads: one for games and one for apps[/url:23wgfx4t]. This is the gaming thread.

100 pages of pictures is enough to fill a mighty thread, and there were a few un-listened to calls to start a new one which everyone is dutifully ignoring, so I'm kicking the second thread of acebest pictures off with this:

[img:2sy6our8]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3363/5722495071_266ef231a5_b.jpg[/img:2sy6our8]

It's an architect's maquette. The area on the left that looks slightly skewed is in fact a building overhang if you look carefully.

Mods, please lock the other thread if you need to. What are we paying you for anyway?

"Right wingers are thick", say Canadian academics

Doctor Glyndwr says: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ ... acist.html

Yes, it's a Daily Mail link -- but the research it's reporting on is proper stuff and the writeup is actually pretty good for once.

Basically, some Candian researchers collated childhood intelligence testing done in Britain in the 50s and 70s where children were examined for intelligence and then asked in adulthood about political views. They found significant correlation between lower childhood intelligence and conservative viewpoints such as "I believe in stiffer punishments for criminals", "I believe schools should teach more discipline" and "I would prefer not to live next to a mixed-race family". The researchers go on to speculate that conservative values make some people of lower intelligence feel safer.

Fascinating stuff -- the survey has more than 15,000 people involved in total, which suggests the correlation the researchers found is likely to be genuine, whatever you make of their specific conclusions.

Dr Lave says: We need a boardgame thread here and I couldn't find one.

And I'm not just talking about (just) Risk and Monopoly I'm talking about super awesome boardgames made by germans and crazies. Carcassone! Spy Alley! Lost Cities! Small Worlds! etc.

I've run out of time now, but I'll hopefully put up mini-reviews of those and others.

Also we were talking in another thread about a board games meet up. Like the ageing looooooosers we are.

GAME - and their stupid reward card/preorder BS

metalangel says: Mrs Meaty's younger sister gave me a £20 giftcard for GAME for my birthday last year. Now, I don't shop much in GAME. I buy online if they've inevitably gotten the exclusive for a special edition I want (Forza 4) but in-store purchases are much rarer, and usually of grotty chav-smeared pre-owned games that are killing the industry don't you know.

ANYWAY. Saints Row 3 is out. Do want, and if you 'pre-order' you also get the Professor Genki stuff: the people cannon truck thing is what I'd like especially. What a great opportunity to finally use this damned giftcard!

So I take a detour home through rush hour traffic to the GAME near my workplace, go up to the counter and ask if they have Saint's Row 3 available to pre-order.

INT: Evening. GAME, Capital Retail Park, Cardiff.

GUY: Yes we do, have you got a Reward Card?
ME: *digging in wallet* if I do it's very old.[[sup:80j30fsz]1[/sup:80j30fsz]]
GUY: Right, well you need a Reward Card, do you want me to see if we can look it up by your postcode or name?
ME: *becoming suspicious* It's probably so many postcodes ago I doubt I'll be able to give you the correct one.
GUY: Okay, well, you need one to pre-order, they're £3 each...
ME: Hang on, I have to pay for this card in order to pre-order a game?
GUY: In store, yes.
ME: See, I have a £20 giftcard, and you can't use those online, so I thought...
GUY: I see. Do you still want it?
ME: *putting wallet away* Not enough to pay £3 extra for the privilege, no.
GUY: Okay then.
ME: Thank you.
[i:80j30fsz]Exunt[/i:80j30fsz]

EXT: Evening. Outside GAME, Capital Retail Park, Cardiff. Cold, misty rain blows on our hero.

ME: In the words of the ancient Saxons, you [i:80j30fsz]Canute[/i:80j30fsz] be serious!

But really, they are. You're not allowed to pre-order stuff unless you have one of their fucking cards, and their fucking cards aren't free like they used to be. My Tesco Clubcard (which I never use) didn't cost me anything. My pre-ordered Gears 3 at the Blockbuster at the end of my street didn't cost me anything. GAME really can fuck off (once I've figured out a way to spend this £20).

[[sup:80j30fsz]1[/sup:80j30fsz]]My last GAME Reward Card, which was of the free variety they used to give you free if you didn't already have one, for free, and was the unhappier side of a decade old. It usually sat pointlessly in my wallet. It died in the line of duty due to terminal snapping-in-half in its new role as an improvised ice scraper for my car.[/size:80j30fsz]

Sim Beex

Grim... says: God help me, I'm playing Sims 3 again. So, I decided to make a house full of Beexers, and see what they would do.

I've left things pretty much random in the "create sim" stage - obviously trying to make them look a bit like their real-life counterparts, and giving them obvious personality traits where appropriate - I won't say what they were, as it's time to guess the Beexers!

We have six Beex men to identify (there is a woman in the screenies, but she's just there to look after "the boys" - unfortunately she's a neurotic, insane, evil vegetarian ).

Once they're in their house, I'll get them obvious jobs that head them toward their life goal, or just grab the first job in the paper if that doesn't matter. I've wound the "free will" up to max, and I'll just let them go and report on what happens.

Stand by for "moving in!"

AceAceBaby says: I was looking around at aftermarket gubbins for the MR2 last night. It's not as easy as with Minis or Land Rovers, where you can't find anything on Google without skipping a page or two of hugely stocked parts places.

I like the idea of "clear" indicators, so I saw some I might get. The problem though is, that the rear indicators (orange lens) are part of the rear clusters all in one. Replacement rear lights are of the "lexus" variety, and so mostly look a bit "chav". Hmm.

I quite like the idea of an APEXi induction system. Just because it sounds cooler than K&N, and probably won't help anything except having something to tinker with/ruin a perfectly working engine's performance (choose whichever).

I also wonder if That Fancy Petrol is worth trying. I didn't bother with it for the little Fiat, because that would have been a waste. I don't know if it's something that makes a big difference to the new car, or if it's just another pointless expense.

On non MR2 related news, and onto Land Rover ones, I have cunningly succeeded in getting a camp bed into my 90, which now technically makes it a camper van. Needs curtains though. I have plenty of gingham in the loft, but I was thinking of cutting up the cheap silver reflective windscreen sunshields I have a stack of, instead.[/color:34rahx8y]

Fallout : New Vegas

JohnCoffey says: I decided it was time for this game to get it's own thread. I am a member of the Fallout fan club on Facebook so I will post what they do whenever I can in this thread.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Top Men working on the Fallout: New Vegas Collector’s Edition have been hard at work on a pack that will trump your expectations, and today we can finally share the first details with you guys.

As you can tell from the above image, every extra has been crafted to resemble items from the world of New Vegas, from the distressed deluxe box to the poker chip recreations. On top of that, this stuff won’t just look great on your shelf — it’s also surprisingly functional. Did we mention the hardcover Fallout comic, and the full deck of New Vegas-themed playing cards?

The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the CE will all include the following:

? Seven “Lucky 7” poker chips, each designed to represent chips from the major casinos found on the New Vegas strip and throughout the Mojave Wasteland.

? A fully customized Fallout: New Vegas deck of cards. Each card in the pack has been uniquely illustrated to depict characters and factions found within the game. Use the cards to play poker, blackjack or Caravan, an original card game that was created by Obsidian especially for New Vegas.

? A recreation of the game’s highly coveted “Lucky 38” platinum chip.

? A hardcover graphic novel “All Roads” that tells the story of some of the characters and events that lead up to Fallout: New Vegas. “All Roads” was written by Chris Avellone, the game’s creative director, and created in conjunction with Dark Horse Comics.

? ‘The Making of Fallout: New Vegas’ DVD. This documentary DVD will contain exclusive video content, including interviews with the developers in which they take you from concept to creation and discuss topics such as story, setting, legacy of the Fallout franchise and more.

North Americans can pre-order at any participating retailer — like GameStop — starting today. European pre-orders will be available throughout Europe in the weeks to come.

So, Lost Cities. Really likeable game. 800 pts is maybe a bit much but I love these chilled out games (especially Carcassonne).

Lots of fun anyway (although a bit hard to play in standard def according to a friend of mine).

RuySan says: So, what have you cinemaphiles have seen lately? Here's what i've been doing:

Milk - It was okay, but Penn overacted as usually. He made me laugh all the way through on "i am sam" and here he was very annoying. Josh Brolin and James Franco were very good though. Franco should have been nominated for Oscar imo. 7/10

The Wrestler - Great. It worked really good as a fictional documentary. Rourke was amazing but Marisa Tomei was the weakest list. Just because she was supposed to be a worn out stripper and she looks absolutely stunning. 8/10

Zack and Miri make a porno - Average comedy but with some very funny situations....and Jason Mewes. The last half hour was full of forgetable romantic storyline that shouldn't be here in the first place. 6/10

Sex Drive - Mediocre teen comedy that outstayed its welcome by 1 and half hour. 4/10

Excel question

Sir Taxalot says: Hello,

I've got a load of excel files, that I would like to compile into one big spreadsheet.

The data is spat out of our database as tab delimited RTF, which opens in excel. One file is one 'batch' and each row represents one sample, so if I can have it easily put the whole months worth of data into one sheet I can easily count the number of samples we've handled. The files are grouped in folders (by month).

Is there an easy and quick way to do this?

It's on a mac at work, office 2008 I think.

Thanks very much.

DavPaz says: Hi Minecrafters,

I've signed up for a low end server that is (allegedly) able to host 5 players at at time.

I'm going to start a new world, no monsters, just building and crafting. This is going to be my baby, but if anyone else is interested in a brave new world, let me know.

EDIT: Here's a recent (3rd January) backup of Pazland for those of you who may want a nose around in Single Player[/url:cpwedx7b]

Use it well.

Yes, that Bullfrog game. Now a first person shooter (did you expect anything else), but do we really need this after Deus Ex? Starbreeze do 'do' an awesome shooter though.

Hang on, February? Not too long to find out then.

Forza Motorsport 4 Car Club

metalangel says: With the imminent arrival of Forza 4, I figured it was time to set up a Car Club within. I've no idea what these involve yet (DrG seems to think it has communal cars you can borrow or something) but if it encourages us to PLAY THE FECKING GAME TOGETHER then it has to be worth trying.

I'm tempted to call it the 'BETEO Motor Vehicle Club Of Gentlemen' or something (I'm not a fan of 'BEEX' but if the majority is against me I'll call it that instead) and you will all be welcome to join and do whatever it enables us to do. Even if it's not very much, let's still have some races, yes? I can't guarantee the frequency of the old Forza 2 nights but I do have one idea:

We need a new official car for Forza 4. For the record, the previous cars were:
FORZA 2 PRE-SCHISM: Mazda MX-5
FORZA 2 POST-SCHISM: Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86
FORZA 3: BMW M3 E30

This car can then also be used for our own Reasonably Priced Car time trials around the Top Gear track in-game.

...I'm not the only one getting this, am I? I know a number of people are a bit disillusioned with 3.

[b:2gp2e9mb]EDIT: The club is now up! It's called the [i:2gp2e9mb]BEEX MOTORING CLUB[/i:2gp2e9mb]. The clantag, as it were, is BEEX, and can't be changed, but it seems the club name can. Please let me know if you'd like in, or send me a request in-game and I'll add you.[/b:2gp2e9mb]
